Problems with comments
It's been pointed out by some contributors that there's a bit of a problem with comments.
The number of comments you see after each post (and on the right hand side of the main blog page) is the number of comments that should be on each post. But we have some technical problems which slows this process...
I've asked one of my technically minded pals to explain.
"The difference is due to the way that the content of the blogs is published. Without going into too much heavy detail, when a blog is updated, certain bits of it are rebuilt and certain bits are automatically changed. These rebuilt sections are then transferred across multiple servers. Sometimes due to the heavy load on bbc.co.uk some of the bits find themselves stuck in a queue waiting to be published. The rebuilt bits can take longer to arrive than the others... and so there is sometimes a disparity between number of comments 'totals' and actual published numbers."
So there you have it. I'm told that we are looking into a solution.

By any chance does the 91Èȱ¬ Office Immigration Directorate use the same software for processing applications?
I'm glad you'll be doing something about the comment count. I used to see that it said "9 comments" or whatever, and find I could only see 5 - or 1!
I thought it was me!
Also for a while the blog font/size went really big, and now it is back to normal. What happened there?
I am so glad he put that into simplistic terms! I understood all of that!!!
By the way Nick my computer crashed one day last week. Could you get your experts to look into that?
Oh! and grannies false teeth have become a bit loose not to mention the.............
I'd always assumed where there were less visible comments than the number shown below the post that the difference were those not yet approved...
I thought it was down to some form of moderation, so thanks for the information. If I'm correct in the protocol your techy was referring to: it's kinda funny - RSVP - in a geeky sort of way!
Is this blog site 'moderated' by the 91Èȱ¬ mind controllers?
Other sites send comments to the page immediately.
Sorry but it does seem many comments from Blair haters seem to get published, the rest are put in the bin. At least TRY to look impartial even though we all know you are not. I do not expect this to be published.
An increasing number of friends will be checking out to see if this is the case. They think I'm lying!
I don't wish for anyone to think I'm being superior or anything, but don't you get your IT support chappy's explanation? I do. :)
Kevin, I think the reason blog posts are delayed on larger sites is partially due to the fact that they are moderated, but also as smaller blogs can be published all at once. Larger blogs, or perhaps sites with multiple blogs, publish continously in bits rather than all at once.
Well done Chris. Your explanation is the best.
I have noticed more often that when I click the "post" button it takes a long time for the post to leave my pc - sometimes it never goes.
This is a little frustrating. My assumption is that the 91Èȱ¬ server/controllers are allocating little bandwidth to this service.
Nonetheless I appreciate being free to comment.
