Sarah McDermott | 11:24 UK time, Monday, 26 July 2010

Here's what we've lined up for tonight's programme:

With Parliament rising for the summer break tomorrow, we will be assessing the performance of the new government in "Coalition Britain - a Newsnight Special".

Live from a forge in the city of steel - Sheffield, we will have the results of a poll on public attitudes to the coalition and public service cuts, as well as reaction from a live studio audience.

Kirsty Wark will be joined by a panel of politicians: cabinet minister David Willetts, newly-elected Lib Dem MP Gordon Birtwistle and Labour's business spokesman Pat McFadden to discuss the government's record so far and its prospects for the future.

Former Lib Dem leader Lord Ashdown and one-time Tory chairman Lord Tebbit will be offering their advice on the state of the coalition, while Newsnight political editor Michael Crick will provide his analysis.

Do join Kirsty at 10.30pm on 91Èȱ¬ Two.

From earlier today:

Tonight we'll be hosting a Coalition Special live from the city of steel - Sheffield.

We will have the results of a poll on public attitudes to the coalition and public service cuts, as well as reaction from a live studio audience.

Kirsty Wark will also be joined by a panel of politicians - and former Lib Dem leader Lord Ashdown and former Tory chairman Lord Tebbit will be offering their own takes on the state of the current government.

What do people make of the coalition's record so far and how will it survive the future?

More details later.

I should imagine the Coalition will survive just fine. It'only a question wether it'll 'survive' with flying colours by undoing/mending the damage inflicted upon the UK by the former government.

    #2 debtjuggler

Thing is debtjuggler what is the debate?

If there was supposedly evidence that there was no Holocaust then as I have said many, many times why would far right people not take their evidence to court or to a reputable academy?

There are those like the old jaded_jean login who would try to protest that the Holocaust was "made up" but then on other occaisions we got the Jews as the "internal political and economic threat" and "Hitler had to do what he did" type of argument.

But those that complain that I obsess about the far right only really have to pay attention to the posts on here and the sub text to see why I am happy to point out where some people are going.

If you think there was no Holocaust you will have to do better than "it was made up to put people off statism" as previous regulars on here did.

  • Comment number 5.

On the coalition I have wearied on the Labour line that vast numbers of Lib Dem supporters have left the coalition for Labour as it was clearly propaganda from day one.

There will be a dip in the polls as most people are anxious, Tories as well, over the inevitable compromises that don't sit well with their individual positions. I didn't want the VAT hike (nor Labours 10p attempt that negates their criticism) and I don't want to see massive cuts in higher education. I worry that they are cutting the police budget too hard.

But for the Lib Dems that was always a fact of life about grown up politics that attempt to serve the nation as opposed to the scorched earth Labour attitude.

For the Tories this is a must win and must be seen to perform well and fairly period.

If it goes well I think in fact the Labour Party is the one in big trouble as their wilderness years may become perpetual - especially as memoirs come out and the conflict of their identity and direction grows.

On the other hand whilst I doubt there will be a double dip if the sovereign debt crisis gets out of control and there is financial chaos then the public won't be sympathetic.

But then would they be sympathetic to a Labour Party whose actual record of delivering economic benefit and social justice is poor and who are currently trying to use class war arguments that are redundant.

  • Comment number 6.

Of course I wonder why Sheffield was chosen so I suppose the Forgemasters funding row is the backdrop?

I gather there was some Tory who wanted to fund the project - so long as it was not government money used to facilitate a trend towards the nuclear energy Labour wanted us to have - whilst the public did not.

I assume no rules were broken and appropriate action will betaken if there was wrong doing but having heard nothing I assume the suspicions are no more valid than concerns over Gordon Browns brother having a role in the nuclear industry.

I doubt the coalition will last the five years but if it doesgthen Labour are going to be very worried.

  • Comment number 7.

Ok I am amongst the many other names that I have been called by the far right on here an alleged "anarchist and Trotskyite".

So, apparently, I am a Lib Dem voter who is also supposedly a foreign government intelligence agent (I think the adolescents are trying to hint at Mossad) who is male and female and waiting for a barmitzvah and is a Newsnight production person who may be working also for News International.

So I saw, I think it was called "A Suspicious Mind" the other week about a game show host who doubled up as a CIA assassin.

Could it be based on truth and should I have gotten a fee? Maybe its all Manchurian Candidate style - as we are all mostly "running dogs of the Jews" apparently.

The crazy image you may be left with is obviously beard and sandals and wild hair and possibly a spliff as I vote Lib Dem. I probably bleed from the nose as I am in shock about us being in power. Probably there should be an old bomb with a fizzing fuse (anarchist) plus a silenced gun (spy) held in a satchel (child) who sits somewhere off set from the various Newsnight presenters holding a mobile so that I can pass on and receive instructions and information to Murdoch (who I respect as a business person but not as a democratic media mogul).

You can't say that the far right don't have imagination but I would suggest that black propaganda needs to be bit more credible.

I would also think 91Èȱ¬ Health and Safety would have concerns about the munitions and firearms.

    They do try though.

I offer some thoughts for the day for those who worry about immigration on the basis that it threatens our culture but usually end up referring to race.

In science we know that genetic variation is greater within a race than between races and there are no links in race and IQ that cannot be explained by environmental factors such as education. The races are the same and as The Incredible Human Journey we all have very common genetic patterns and mots of the differences are simply cosmetic.

Culture has no relationship to genetics as it can clearly be possessed by anybody.

The far right having lost the argument that there are differences between the races tries to use sleight of hand to pass off the latter notion of culture when they are referring to racial issues.

Groups such as Migration Watch are not racists and do not endorse the racial view of some smaller "radical" parties.

Of the smaller parties UKIP and the English Democrats, do not, to the best of my knowledge, endorse any racial principles.

"coalition" - what "coalition"? There is only Govt - and that Govt is set upon destroying the UK.

as shown from QT - far more interesting and accurate summations come from the General Public, rather than those who have spent their careers and lives creating the mess we are in now. So what is the point in asking these 'political luminaries' for their opinions - they only attempt to plaster ever more wrinkle-cream upon the cracks showing in the National Façade of a political class that is actually competent for the job.

those who argue for continued war - should get sent for a REAL tour of duty IED sweeping - and as a normal infantryman, NOT with special security like the german boy.

those who argue for benefit cuts - should have ALL their wealth taken away, and resettled in a sink council estate to live upon those benefits they are willing to allot to others.

those who argue for essential services to be cut - should have their own private cover removed, and they are forced to use the worst State provision.

lets put some personal responsibility back into Politics.

on this new "democratisation" of the Police Forces: ROTFLMAO - in tears.

here i offer a choice to the Public - would they prefer local Police Services to have Central Party Apparatchiks ordering around the Chief Constable in their area?

this is what is on offer - the areas will be offered a choice between candidates ENTIRELY chosen on Party lines - in other words, camoron and the Tory oligarchs will be directly selecting a political officer in areas with large Tory majorities (such as much of the South East), to 'liaison' with the Police to ensure they follow the 'right' policies - for instance on 'Public Disorder' (ie unauthorised marches and demonstrations) - and can threaten the Chief Constable if he/she does not comply with the Political Officer.

this is STRAIGHT out of the Soviet Union, and marks ever LOWER Democracy - for who truly believes that the Central Parties hold ANY concerns with the normal citizens?

as so often, a policy is being claimed will do the exact opposite its ACTUAL practise will be in reality.

this move is to more politicise the Police, and also giving Central Govt ever more control over the UK.

how can anyone BELIEVE a single word that comes out of these swine's mouths?

roll on the next General Election. - Oh wait, i remember, they are also going to prevent Parliament from having that power as well, whilst tricking the LibDims into supporting a Bill that not only does not have ANYTHING the LibDims really want, along with blatant gerrymandering in the Tories favour.

but lucky old us, Clegg managed to sneak in a criticism of the Iraq War. Well, that was *certainly* worth LibDim for!!

How would they have voted instead?

Without knowing that, the poll is meaningless.

"The far right having lost the argument that there are differences between the races tries to use sleight of hand to pass off the latter notion of culture when they are referring to racial issues."

You have previously implied that I'm one of the 'far right' simply because I wish to halt the destruction of our English culture.

I didn't see any comment from you regarding the recent (and oft-raised) issues of FGM that is now being practiced IN UK. That and other horrific practices (eg stoning, honour killing)are barbaric cultural practices and need no sleight of hand to be condemned as horrific and alien to our English culture.

"Groups such as Migration Watch are not racists and do not endorse the racial view of some smaller "radical" parties. Of the smaller parties UKIP and the English Democrats, do not, to the best of my knowledge, endorse any racial principles."

Well, that's a relief then - perhaps an endorsement? Are you now disillusioned with the compromised LibDems and perhaps thinking of switching to English Dems in the near future? I'll send you the T-shirt.

To meet Mindy's point could you codify your regular phrases, and just respond with "Blog 'A', or "Blog 'B'" to save a lot of repetition?

They entice naive people to vote for them so that the consumer is not protected by watchdogs. That makes making money easier - for the backers of the far-right.

Perhaps one of the biggest corporate rip-off's in the UK today is BT answer 1571, which it would appear that almost every landline in the country now has to ensure that you get charged 10p when the line is engaged. Similarly most phone lines have BT answer after a very short number of rings, also costing you 10p to find out that the person you called was not in.

I just wonder how much false revenue this costs the public in a year, most people are to ignorant to have it set back to standard, you can have it removed but its loads of hassle on the phone to BT. We had ours put back to default some time ago, my dad is half deaf due to being a gunner in the Royal Artillery during WW2 and its was impossible to hear it soon enough to get back from the Kitchen. I had enquired about a low user tariff, but my dad had to do that personally when he really struggles with strange people.

THE BT DEFAULT RIP OFFS. (#22)

D'accord Bro. I registered the 1571 trick also.

Furthermore, there was the bill 'adjustment' a while back (some cock and bull story of aligning two payment periods) that resulted in a one-off windfall of a few pounds from every BT line-renter. I challenged it, and got a 'constructive' load of incomprehensible garbage back. I was not meant to understand - I was meant to give up and go away. I did, but not before I had 'got their number'.

BT are just another example of the subtle corruption that is woven into British culture. But looking at the Westminster template - why not? All one can reasonably say is: "Well done BT."

"Fast-track deportation was introduced to deal with certain types of case.

Such as those involving unaccompanied *children* who could not be detained before removal and posed a risk of absconding.

It was also applied to individuals thought to be at *risk of suicide once given their removal instructions*.

And instances where reduced notice was deemed necessary "to maintain order and discipline" at a detention centre."

    my structure.

this is instead of a MERE 72 hour notice to leave all their friends, home, family, make arrangements for any dependants, seek legal advice, and essentially close down their UK life - many knowing they will face torture or worse at the other end of the deportation.

i would just like to repeat this bit: - "It was also applied to individuals thought to be at risk of suicide once given their removal instructions."

To use it also as a justification for "fast-tracking" individuals who would probably prefer to commit suicide than to go back to what they would face - the sheer inhumanity of it staggers me. How cynical can a Govt get, that can pass such legislation as that?

whether or not you agree with ANY immigration, or asylum seekers, to not even give what are sometimes UK residents for years the chance to say goodbye properly to the people they love in the UK, to deny people access to the legal representation they are entitled to as human beings, - just as *we* are entitled to legal representation wherever in the world we are arrested by the local State for whatever reason, is abhorrent to any modern, advanced CIVILISED Nation.

Certainly any Nation that has been lecturing much of the rest of the World about Human Rights for the past few decades should not be so casually breaking basic Human Rights so flagrantly.

    - or surreptitiously, for that matter.

Black Magic, Coming to a Church near You

Further to my comments (#15 to gango) on alien and dangerous cultures that have been brought into UK by uncontrolled immigration and the failed social engineering experiment of multi-culturalism, I refer you to ‘Dispatches’ last night:-

You often quote a Channel 4 documentary as the irrefutable authority in support of your theme of ‘there are no differences between races’ so this one should be essential (though horrific) viewing for you.

Previous documentaries have shown this culture to be prevalent in Africa (e.g.Nigeria, Congo, Kenya):-

Now, as ‘Dispatches’ shows, there are hundreds of churches where ministries such as DEYA are working their mumbo-jumbo on immigrant (ignorant) congregations in Birmingham, Liverpool and London.

Do you consider these programmes and the attached blogs as ‘right wing extremism’ or is this just part of the ‘We Welcome Diversity’ (and Disfunction) that have been inflicted on our English society?

Social services are again being blamed for not being alert to cases of child neglect and abuse, but no pastor has ever been prosecuted and our tolerance and fear of offending such alien cultures is often the cause.

SO - DAVE IS ANGRY ABOUT EU:TURKEY PREJUDICE (#32 link)

Decades ago, I would enlarge my photo's using a projector. After exposure, the paper was still white - no image, but when immersed in the developer solution, A PICTURE SLOWLY EMERGED.

DAVE, immersed in his coveted role, is a picture slowly emerging - one of peremptory imperiousness, with which 'righteous anger' sits comfortably 'on high'. I recently pointed to his magistrate mother as a formative influence. Dave's picture (somewhat modified) loomed large in the election, speaking volumes of EGO. The picture is still developing. I think we have another 'Believer Tony' in 'Certainty Dave'. Have we done it again?

although HIS policies are aiming at making the UK a 3rd world country ASAP, to bring in Turkey, with its 10s of millions of unemployed, atrocious Human Rights record, and slightly-shielded military dictatorship hiding in the wings, is irrevocable nonsense.

here's the problem with such a Mailista analysis. We insult other cultures every day - the abuse that UK Muslims went through at the beginning and during American's 'War on Islam' was incredible, and indeed still are, although it is slightly lessening now. There are no problems it seems with our tabloid and Meeja Journals heaping as much abuse as they can onto other cultures - and sometimes like in FGM, or this "witch-children" stupidity, or "honour killings", these abuses are valid, and indicate the clash between our own values, and different value systems. It is through such clashes we can examine our own culture, as well.

for it is HARDLY a fact that UK Culture is PERFECT, is it?

i do find it boggling how a newspaper can claim we "cannot criticise other cultures" whilst doing EXACTLY THAT - not so much that the newspapers are so duplicitous with the truth, but that so few readers spot this basic flaw in the argument.

in fact, what IS happening is that the right-wing press, owned by the super-wealthy Meeja Oligarchs, is attempting to focus citizen angry energies at "The Other", instead of at those who have created the problems we are facing.

there are many 'christian' churches that hold such beliefs, white, even middle class churches. What we do to some of our Nation's children is far worse than FGM - horrendous though that is. Examine how children are treated in Youth Detention Centres. The abuse that Venables and children like him went through.

"Emancipation of women," - we still have a LONG way to go on this, it is hardly we are the model for everyone else to follow.

"freedom of speech," - but not as much as the Meeja Barons, who control access to information, and have NO compunction to make it truthful. Nor are the 'wrong' opinions listened to anyway, even if we DO get to speak. Did they listen to the anti-war marches? To animal rights campaigners? To environmentalists? To Human Rights campaigners? Of course not - they are the 'wrong' opinions, and might make people question what this Life is for.

"freedom to move around in any community, not just your "own","

undercut the gangs by decriminalising and controlling the drugs trade. Create productive industries to employ the currently unemployable.

"non torture of animals to death, the list is endless."

ummm - where did THAT one come from? Torturing animals to death is an old tradition in the UK, often preluded by a long chase with a pack of hounds. And its hard to see modern agriculture as anything BUT slowly torturing animals to death.

but it WOULD be nice if the UK turned away from such activities.

"Perhaps it's all about divide and rule, 'eh?!""

despite your sarcastic tone, yes, that is EXACTLY what the Meeja is attempting to do. "Don't be angry at the Banksters - why, look at those Black people instead!!!" "Don't blame the Politicians - its the IMMIGRANTS, STUPID!!!" "Its not that the Rich don't pay enough tax, its that all our money is going on foreigners" etc etc etc etc etc.

not to say these things are not worth investigating and reporting, but do you honestly think the tone of the articles would be the same if it was rich white people living in mansions who has the same beliefs about FGM, or "witch-children"??
