Quarterbacks take centre stage on Super Bowl Sunday

Post categories: ,Ìý,Ìý

Neil Reynolds | 08:23 UK time, Thursday, 3 February 2011

The greatest show on earth is about to get even bigger as the Green Bay Packers take on the Pittsburgh Steelers live on 91Èȱ¬ One in on Sunday night.

One of the biggest crowds in Super Bowl history will be on hand as more than 100,000 fans pack into Dallas Cowboys Stadium in chilly North Texas to witness what promises to be an exciting showdown between two quarterbacks keen to write their name in the record books.

While the likes of the Black Eyed Peas, Christina Aguilera, Maroon 5 and Keith Urban provide the entertainment that will make for breathtaking viewing on the , Ben Roethlisberger and Aaron Rodgers will take centre stage when it really matters.

Roethlisberger has led the Steelers to the Super Bowl for the third time in six seasons and he has the opportunity to join an elite group of quarterbacks who have won three Super Bowls.

Aaron Rodgers and Ben Roethlisberger will compete for Super Bowl XLV on Sunday night.

Aaron Rodgers and Ben Roethlisberger will compete for Super Bowl XLV on Sunday night

If he were to lead Pittsburgh to victory over the Packers on Sunday, Big Ben would have earned the right to join the exhalted company of Joe Montana, Terry Bradshaw, Troy Aikman and Tom Brady. Special kudos should go to Bradshaw and Montana, who won the big game four times each.

Roethlisberger has his detractors following some distasteful off-field behaviour this off-season. He was linked to a couple of and while no criminal charges were filed, he was of 2010 by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

Rodgers is gunning for his first Super Bowl ring but wants it just as badly as Roethlisberger, if not more. This is a guy who has finally emerged from Brett Favre's shadow in Green Bay and has emphatically proven the Packers were right to go with the younger passer in 2008.

In terms of offering the complete package, I would argue that Rodgers is among the top two or three quarterbacks in the game right now. I would put him right up there with the likes of Tom Brady and Peyton Manning. I put him ahead of both guys last week in compiling my team of the year and did catch a bit of flak for that, but it is safe to say I am a big Rodgers fan.

Someone like Philadelphia's Michael Vick may be more exciting to watch in terms of pure athletic ability, but he's not half the quarterback that Rodgers is. I saw both of them go of the playoffs in January and while Vick took my breath away at times with his physical talent, it was Rodgers who looked more assured and more accomplished.

Blessed with a strong arm, accuracy, poise and enough athletic ability to be one of the most productive running quarterbacks in the NFL this season, Rodgers is pretty special.

The knock on him prior to this season - and it was a harsh one given he is still in the early stages of being an NFL starter - was that he had never won a playoff game and he also dropped a couple of big games in 2009 when his Packers took on the Favre-led Minnesota Vikings in emotional encounters.

But this is not a player who is going to melt under the intense spotlight of a Super Bowl. Rodgers has always held up his end of the deal for the Packers and I am struggling to recall a game Green Bay lost because of a poor performance by their quarterback.

In 47 career starts, Rodgers has posted a of 100 or above on 25 occasions and he is currently the highest-rated quarterback in NFL history (98.4). The statistics also show how effective he is in pressure situations. He led the NFL on third-down passing in 2010 and was the league's top-ranked quarterback when other teams blitzed him.

Add in the fact that Rodgers is scarily efficient inside the opponent's 20-yard line - where it is supposed to be harder to complete passes due to there being less space to operate - and I cannot foresee a situation that will make him freeze on Sunday.

Roethlisberger is not as pretty to watch as Rodgers and he will make mistakes along the way, but what is most impressive is that he steps up in a big way for the Steelers when they need him the most. And he doesn't let mistakes that have occurred previously affect him in any way.

In the , Roethlisberger was out of sorts in the second half - there is no disputing that fact as he only completed three passes in 30 minutes of play. But it is telling that two of those completions went for first downs on the final drive of the game, allowing the Steelers to run out the clock and advance to this Super Bowl.

Roethlisberger also happens to be very tough to bring down - which is pretty handy given that Pittsburgh's offensive line can be very shaky indeed at times - and he extends plays like no other quarterback in the game.

Big Ben is at his best when he is playing what he likes to describe as "playground football" and that often allows his receivers as much as 10 seconds to get open downfield. Covering a receiver for that long on any given play is a tough shift for even the best defensive backs in the NFL.

There are lots of other factors that will determine who will win Super Bowl XLV on Sunday night and there are stars across the field. Greg Jennings and Donald Driver are playmaking wide receivers for the Packers, Rashard Mendenhall is an emerging power runner for the Steelers, and the top two defenders in the NFL in 2010 - Pittsburgh's Troy Polamalu and Green Bay's Clay Matthews - are sure to have an impact.

But I truly believe the NFL is more of a passing league than ever before and that makes the quarterback the most important man on the field.

Most of the recent Super Bowl winners - New Orleans, Pittsburgh, New York Giants, New England, Indianapolis - have been led by elite quarterbacks or guys who were in red-hot form ().

So I think that makes the battles between Rodgers, Roethlisberger and their respective opposing defences the most crucial aspect of this Super Bowl.

The quarterback who has the best game on Sunday evening will be the winner. And as I backed him and his team from the preseason, I'm going to say Aaron Rodgers and his Packers team-mates will be celebrating at the end of what should be an exciting game.

Enjoy the Super Bowl.

All this Manning love really gets to me: I don't think you can put him in the top 3. His passer rating was 10th in the NFL. Yeah 33 touchdowns, but 17 picks? Not a great ratio, and only 5 quarterbacks threw more. It frustrates me how people get caught up with number of TD's determining how good a QB is: look at the praise Brees gets 22 picks (only Eli threw more)? You can make the argument that neither had a good running attack, but that didn't stop Rodgers. Both still good quarterbacks, but there not in the same league Rodgers/Brady: who manage to protect the ball as well.

I think its pretty clear that Rodgers and Brady are the in a class of their own: then there's a second tier with the likes of Rivers, Vick, Big Ben and Manning.

Also, I can't help but think the defensive battle is going to be awesome: Matthews v Harrison and Polamalu v Woodson. If one team has both of those players making more of an impact on the game, then they will win.

  • Comment number 2.

For Rodgers to be at his most effective GB will need to use the run to set up the pass, and I can't see Woodley, Harrison et al allowing much of that (as usual).

There is a danger of Rodgers getting picked early on as the Steelers will mix it in the secondary if they have have shut down the run. Turnovers will decide the outcome as I can't see both sides passing 20 points at all Neil.
I too am a Rodgers fan but 3rd and long in the superbowl in front of 100,000 will really see what he's made of. Big Ben's been there and is pretty unflappable now. He was rather shaky in his first superbowl granted but mendenhall will consistently get 5 or 6 yards to make is job easier this time. Rodgers won't have that luxury with the Steelers rush defence.
    21-17 Steelers

  • Comment number 3.

Peter... I was not actually giving a lot of love to Eli Manning... I was saying he was not in that elite group but got hot in the playoffs the year the Giants won the Super Bowl.

  • Comment number 4.

    Steelers 21-16.

  • Comment number 5.

I have the feeling about Pittsburgh that while they're not on smoking hot form now, they do have the ability to win ugly.

    I'll go 27-24 Steelers.

  • Comment number 6.

Neil, im pretty sure Peter was talking about Peyton, not Eli.

  • Comment number 7.

    Neil

I dont think Peter was referring to "that" Manning but rather Peyton. Personally i think you could make an argument that Payton MIGHT be just slightly on the downward curve as far as production goes however i think youd be hard pressed to say that he doesnt belong in that elite group with Brady & Brees given the receivers he had, or rather didnt have, and also the totally non existent running game Indy had this year.

I would rank the QB's as follows: -

Elite with SB rings - Brady, Brees, Manning (no not Eli) & Big Ben
Elite without SB rings - Rodgers, Vick & Rivers
Just plain lucky to have a SB ring - Eli.

Hopefully come Sunday night Aaron will have moved up to the top category!! GO PACK

  • Comment number 8.

Sorry for confusion - it has been a manic week and I am a bit sleep-deprived.

Peyton is still pretty special, I think. But I would put Rodgers on a par with him now.

  • Comment number 9.

Rodgers is just awesome to watch. People harp on about Vick, but Rodgers' grace and elusivness in the pocket coupled with his arm is just jaw dropping. The game against the Falcons was one of the best I have ever seen.

Having said that, Big Ben just does not take 'no' for an answer (as the ladies know). He will play like poop all game then throw a 40 yard TD with 3 defenders hanging off him in the last 10 seconds. Its just what he does.

I hate to say it, but Pitsburgh by 4.

  • Comment number 10.

    @Parker-Scotty
    > Elite without SB rings - Rodgers, Vick & Rivers

Can't argue with Rodgers and Rivers but I'm not convinced by Vick. I suspect that once defences work him out then he'll be a lot less effective. Also with his style of play then sooner or later he's going to get a bit hit and be out for a few weeks.

Packers to edge it in a cracking old-school contest!

  • Comment number 11.

Think it's gonna be one of the great Superbowls of recent times( and there have been some great ones recently) and while id love Rodgers and the Pack to do it I just can't see past the Steelers.. they just always seem to turn it on for the post-season and particularly the Superbowl.. i can see this game running along the lines of Superbowl 43 against Arizona.. Rodgers putting the Pack up with a couple minutes to go before Ben leads the Steelers on a game winning drive with a TD.. have to agree with Peter on the defensive side of the game being just as vital.. both teams seem to create turnovers for fun and i will definately put a bet on a defensive TD in this one..

  • Comment number 12.

We all know deep down that the best QB in the league is Mr Mark Sanchez.

He will have the SB ring to prove it next season.

  • Comment number 13.

OK our O line might be shaky (it has been for the last 6 seasons but it hasn`t stopped us winning 2 Super Bowls) but our D definately isn`t and yet again it our Troy, Ike and the Steelers front seven that will win the game for the Steeler Nation. One thing that has not been mentioned a great deal is the Steelers roster`s superior experience in the big game. 16 Steelers going for their third ring with a further dozen or so looking for a second which means Pittsburgh won`t choke. Can the same be said about the Packers? I take the Steelers to make it Seven 28-21.

    @ John Davies
Take your point on Michael Vick, maybe 1, not full, season of the "new & improved" Michael Vick isnt enough to call him Elite and if i supported the Eagles id be seriously worried that the more and more hits he takes as the season progresses will hinder his performance in the playoffs (did it this season?).

Mind you as good as Rodgers is at extending the play by taking off himself it scares me everytime he does this in case he comes across someone like James Harrison or Troy and they flatten him!! Sometimes i wish he'd take the 'easy' way out and get down.

re "as more than 100,000 fans pack into Dallas Cowboys Stadium in chilly North Texas"

Let's hope they all get there - just got word that Houston Airport is shut and sub-freezing temperatures are on the cards for the next two to three days right from Southern Texas all the way up to New York.

Thousands of flights have already been cancelled and there'll be chaos over the next few days as people try to get home and airlines try to get their schedules sorted.

On the game itself, I think GBP by 10. Tight (3 point margin) until the last 2 minutes then PS interception on a potential game tying drive sends the Pack down the field for the game winner TD.

  • Comment number 17.

Neil, good blog as usual. However think its bit early to put rodgers on par with manning and brady. I can see your argument of Rodgers as qb of the year but until he proves it over 5/6 years its hard to put on the same level as those 2. However, do agree that manning dipped slightly this year, but the colts did have some serious injuries during the year, an the non-existent run game meant defences could focus on the pass.

ben is good game manager an i think his big game experience will be telling factor. Ben mightn't be the star of the show come sunday but you can be sure he'll do the small things well.

  • Comment number 18.

I love Rodgers, but the one thing about Favre was his ability to drive down field and pull out a last gasp victory (he nearly did it against us at Lambeau this season). Our defence can close out a game but I'm struggling to recall one where our offence has pulled one out of the fire. We've lost more games by 3-5 points than we've won.
If the Packers are behind late in the fourth, I fear that Rodgers wont be the clutch QB that Big Ben can be, although it wont be through panic.
But when it comes to watching the Packers, I'm always the pessimist.

  • Comment number 19.

I am an American who loves both the NFL and EPL and I have to say that it is really refreshing and tremendous to see people across the pond who like the NFL too along with soccer (hehe).

  • Comment number 20.

P.S. This article could put a lot of U.S. NFL writers to shame, very impressed.

  • Comment number 21.

I have to admit I don’t know too much about NFL and I am sure you guys know more than me. But in reference to all the comments about Eli, I remember watching that Super Bowl when the defender had a sack on him and he broke free then threw it down town for a 1st and goal to lead them to a Super Bowl. I’m not saying that in itself makes him elite, but great players make great plays in great games. That in itself will make him go down in history.

Steelers to squeeze past with Big Ben having an Eli moment of his own.

  • Comment number 22.

    @Peter
I think it's quite presumptuous to say Rogers is better than Peyton now. Sure Peyton had arguably his worst season since his rookie year but there were numerous factors to take in to account for why this happened including numerous injuries, practically no running game whatsoever at times, and having to play catch up. The guy still reads the game better than anyone. If you take away those 4 awful games in the middle of the season, his stats would look 10 times better. Rogers is a terrific quarterback and after this season, it's probably safe to say he's an equal of Manning and Brady but no one else has come to close to playing as well as those two on such a regular basis and so it's to early to say he's better than Manning. Brady for me is Number 1.

Anyways, as much as I dislike the Steelers and would love to see Rogers and the Packers win, I just think the Steelers will have too much for the Pack and will win. Should be a great game though.

  • Comment number 23.

Thanks for the great blog during the season Neil.

As an NFL fan in Melbourne, Australia, (and specifically a Packers fan) it's really interesting to see the perspective of someone who's not part of the US media machine, some of the US journos are too close to the game (eg ex-NFL players) and can't see the wood for the trees!

As for the Super Bowl, well I hope your prediction is right, I think it's so close to being a 50-50 game it's not funny, and it's interesting that one team's strength (eg Steelers run defense) meets the other team's weakness (Packers running game). You could also perhaps put in the same category the Packers passing game (strength) v the Steelers pass defense (relative weakness).

I'll tip the Pack 27-24, Rodgers seems the obvious MVP candidate if the Pack win (although I'll be betting on Williams & Shields in the hope they get a few INTs), and I'm punting on Jordy Nelson for First TD as a 25/1 roughie.

    Go Pack!

  • Comment number 24.

I've gotten more into NFL over the past few years and it is an exciting game to watch, it's just a shame about the time zones and the fact it will be a Sunday night, which means work in the morning. Still, it is on record and I will have an interesting Monday of trying to not see the result. My prediction, with all the hype the defence will rule 7-3 Packers.

That was a joke obviously, unless it comes true in which case I'm a genius. I'm saying Packers by a touchdown, something like 27-20.

  • Comment number 25.

My head says Steelers and my heart says Packers. I'm not a fan of either side (Chiefs fan myself) but watching Rodgers play this year has been fantastic and I enjoy watching him so much more than scrappy Big Ben. Not saying Big Ben is a bad Quarterback I mean 2 rings already, superb under pressure, hard to bring down and will make huge plays when needed...just dont like his style.
Rodgers learnt from one of the best, Brett Farve and you can see some off Brett in him but his style is more refined like Brady. Calm, calculated and a dagger of an arm. BUT can Rodgers do it on the day that's the big question can he execute under the pressure? Big Ben has done before we know that he will be up for it again that's for sure.
Other things in the game will be important, defensive & offensive match-ups, penalties, drops, 3rd downs and more importantly the right play calling at the right time. Its gonna be close, tight and nervy...which QB can hack it? Come on Packers!

  • Comment number 26.

Firstly, the bad weather in the States probably sets back any chance of a codl weather SuperBowl for another decade at least - which is so ironic given the cold has extended down to Texas, and even moreso given that the Packers & Steelers would probably love to get it on in the Tundra, where they would both feel at home.

I watched the Steelers 4 or 5 weeks ago sneak a win, and I said then that they seem to have that perfect combination of "luck, big play ability on both sides of the ball, and an awesome Defence" that usually adds up to champions. I'd qualify that now, by adding..."if their patchwork O line can hold up"

Green Bay are the "hot" team now, and Rodgers would certainly silence a lot of his detractors by getting his Ring, and in a season of adversity at that (Loss of Grant, Finley etc). I hope they do pull it off. (And for the record, I am in the "Roders is a top tier elite QB" camp - along with Brady, Brees, Rivers and Peyton)

One minor quibble though Neil, I don't necessarily agree that Donald Driver is the playmaking WR he was - he is a possession receiver at best now, and not a big factor in the offence any more. Jordy Nelson, and James Jones have been the big play compliment to Jennings recently. I also think that the emergence of James Starkes has sparked the Packers, and how he goes could have a huge bearing on the game. I dont anticpiate big MVP type stats, but if he can get 75 yards on the ground and help move the chains, it will take a little of that Steeler defensive heat off Air Rodgers and his wideouts, and that might just be enough. Without the ground game drawing some attention, I dont think Rodgers will get enough consistent time to pick the spaces in the zone coverage apart.

    Either way, bring it on!

  • Comment number 27.

Usually the name of the Super Bowl winner depends on the half-time act.

How so ? Well for the last three years if I liked the performers, the team I favoured won and if not, they didn´t. So I knew for example last year with The Who doing their stuff the Saints would win.

    And this year ? Black-eyed Peas (+)
    Christine Aguilera (- and how)
Maroon 5 (one hit wonder, don´t count)
Keith Urban (sort of + , but he named his daughter Sunday.....good job she wasn´t born on Shrove Tuesday !)

As we can see from the above, it´s going to be a very tight game, I think with not so many points, I predict the Packers win 20-18 , yes I foresee 6 field goals for the Steelers.

Oh, and one should never sl-- off a player of Peyton Manning´s calibre, even if he is starting to decline.

Let's be honest with ourselves, only Americans and wanna-be Americans from outside of America, who stress about the "will they won't they" scenario between Ross and the fit one, you know, the former Mrs Brad Pitt, in Friends, give a hot diggidy damn about this alleged sport! And what's this reference to Big Ben? How is a giant bell based in Westminster going to participate in this tomfoolery?

Greatest show in America maybe. Outside that, noone really cares.
Why are they showing coverage of it here, it's not our sport.
The greatest show on earth is either the World Cup or Olympics, neither of which NFL can hold a candle to.
'Greatest show on earth' - do me a favour.

Michael Johnson you let yourself down chasing the almighty dollar.
The World Cup Final is a one day event, 90 minutes I believe on a single day

Wow you guys are idiots, if you dont like NFL dont come and post here. NFL is the most tactical sport in the world by far, tactics wise football (soccer) and rugby have nothing on NFL. Their showing coverage here because i lot of people from the UK are intrested in NFL as its a far better sport to watch than football, you dont get the players diving about and faking injurys. Yes i agree its not the greatest show on earth, how can anything ever beat china's opening of the Olympics. But what sport/nation doesnt like to exagerate, i mean lots of people in the UK consider the EPL the best league in the world when clearly its not.

The 91Èȱ¬ are only putting this nfl rubbish on because they can get the rights to it as no one cares. It's so annoying to have to put up with advert about this all the time and have it on at night. Why can't they just stick it on at 4am like channel 5 do with baseball etc? It's basically Rugby slowed down but with silly helmets.

I can't stand it along with those friendly games they keep trying to put on at Wembley. Stick it on e4 Ruth the meganold re runs of friends another American stuff. Boring. Dull, dull, dull. It's on 5 live as well, what a joke and waste of tax payers money. We already have the best sports in the world. Watching Jake Humphrey, who does a good job on F1, say things like "de fence" and "soccer" all night is horrible.

Having a preference for one sport doesn't mean you have to hate another.
This weekend I've watched live rugby, Live football, live skiing, Live ski jumping, Live cricket, live snooker. The previous weeks it's included lots of live tennis. Never do I feel the need to denigrate other sports even F1 ( even then I take note of the results )

Baseball hasn't been shown on TV this season (unfortunately) and the London NFL games aren't friendlies, they're part of the regular season schedule, so really it hasn't entered your consciousness as much as you think.

It's good to see a post like yours, it just goes to show that you are narrow minded and have no idea what you're talking about.
Define the "we" when you say "we" have the best sports in the world.
Most sports now are global. American football attracts big audiences on Sky during the season, and the non friendly games at Wembley have been sell outs.
Off to bed now little man.

Although I didn't fully appreciate the fact I could watch the Packers at Lambeau, It soon became apparent how lucky I was to have use of a season ticket when I was living in Green Bay, (my girlfriend had the Packers organisation as a client) the atmosphere in and outside was phenomenal.
I very soon became like all the other cheeseheads and have never felt such an affinity with any other sporting team.

The tailgate parties were always great fun with lots of bloody marys to keep out the cold and bone chilling cold it could be! but that all added to the occasion.

To all those complaining about The Superbowl being shown live on 91Èȱ¬; it really doesn't matter to me as I'll be watching on SKY mostly as Im assuming the 91Èȱ¬ analysis will be more geared to those who don't follow the game throughout the season.
But in general the more live sport I can see on TV the better. There's plenty of rubbish broadcast daily to get irritated about!

  • Comment number 51.

It's an awful sport end of. Shouldn't be on our screens and we have the original onge, Rugby, which is what influenced it historically. As others have suggested, the 91Èȱ¬ should spend our license fees on rights to English sports or better world sports than this nfl rubbish. It's so dull.

Rugby is absolutely dire. Get the ball. Kick it away. Get the ball. Kick it away. Diabolical sport and it's on all the time. Absolute garbage.

Think about what you're saying sirmattsway. THINK. How much do you think the CL final would cost? How much do you think the FA Cup costs? THINK BEFORE YOU WRITE.

  • Comment number 53.

i disagree about rugby been dire. the same could be said about american football. i tried watching it once and tuned off the tv after 5 mins, the constant stoppage in play is off putting. besides rugby is famous around the world. as i said earlier to each their own

For those who are saying that the 91Èȱ¬ screening this is a waste of money, try reading the front page of today's Mail on Sunday.
The 91Èȱ¬ is spending £877m (that's EIGHT HUNDRED AND SEVENTY SEVEN MILLION POUNDS) on a project to relocate 2,500 staff from London to Manchester. Staff who don't want to go by the way.
To top it all, the Executive who is heading up this project commutes 4,000 miles from Kentucky, USA.
Now, that's what I call a real waste of licence payers money.

...and what with this sport that supposed to be 1 hour ends up for 3 hours with breaks every 2 mins ??? Lets watch paint dry

As a Scot living in Wisconsin, I have become a massive Packer supporter. This year has been a great year and to be honest I couldn't care less about the Old Firm game on today or any other SPL fixture. I am totally up for a great superbowl.

I can't see how the bookies can make the Packers favourites? I mean Ben and his Steelers have been to two superbowls and won them in the last 6 years and they look in good shape playing well in the last half of the season. Also the experience they bring is massive.

I also think that had he not won 2 superbowls he would not be playing for the Steelers due to his sillyness in night clubs this past summer. Usually the Steeler org. is not very accustomed to letting players off with these types of actions as a professional.

I hope the Packers win and easily but I think it will be tight as two great defenses and 2 good QB's play a tight game. 28-23 to the Packers!!!

I really don't get all the posts on here bitching about NFL not being a fit sport for the 91Èȱ¬ to show.

If people don't want to watch it then there are plenty of other channels available.

Myself, I'm a footie (though some would say being a Nuneaton town & Leeds United fan means I know nothing about football), Rugby Union, Cricket & F1 fan who is also a fan of NFL.

There is room for all of that on the TV.

Theres even room for 13 girl, tackle me 5 times then let me have a go because it hurts, Rugby League for those that enjoy it.

The 91Èȱ¬ obviously think they will get the ratings figures to justify the cost, otherwise they wouldn't be showing it - and as far as the 91Èȱ¬ are concerned ratings are all it's about.

If people don't like that then why waste their time moaning about it, because they don't like the sport, instead of doing something more productive - There must be a macrame program somewhere in the Lifestyle channels that they can be moaning about instead.

Two great teams with two great defences and QBs, so I think it will be close.
However, no Pouncey for the Steelers, they'll miss him, and I think that Rogers has the edge over Big Ben.
I just hope it will be a good, close game.

For all those who don't like/understand American Football, stick with girly sports like today's football and rugby.

who_dat wrote: "For all those who don't like/understand American Football, stick with girly sports like today's football and rugby."

As someone who is an NFL fan, as well as what you call girly sports I think the comment just made simply gives those who want to have a dig at American Football all the ammunition they need.

To call rugby a girly sport simply gives rugby fans a chance to fire orr rounds about "girly Americans who have to wear body armour".

All this attacking other sports because you don't like them (and YES, my 13 girl Rugby League comment above was a joke) is childish & petty.

If you don't like them, don't watch them ... Problem solved.

Its kinda amusing seeing people labeling Americans ignorant and introverted and yet trash the NFL presumably because it isn't British. Classic. Its very endemic unfortunately of people in the UK who base most of their assumptions of the US via the media. We label Americans ignorant yet somehow believe we understand their culture and country perfectly.

I'm not American but I could just as easily criticise our love affair with darts and snooker. Perhaps give tonight a chance guys, or at best just switch off and go to sleep. Are you really that bothered that its eating into that precious TV prime time of 1am in the morning?

@31 - I would happily swim across the Atlantic to east some proper Buffalo wings.

Steelers are gonna win though. ;)

I take your point, and I may have been a bit harsh, but have you seen how quickly footballers go down these days and roll around like they've been hit by a bus?
Rugby is better, so I'll retract my comment about them.

  • Comment number 63.

Aarfy - absolutely spot on. Well said.

  • Comment number 64.

@who-dat say what you want about football it's the most famous and entertaining sport in the world (in my opinion). i'm willing to give american football another try tonight and i'll try watching it with an open mind hopefully it doesn't disappoint.

There will be a lot of crash bang wallop (like in rugby just now) but you have to watch the plays made by the QB and how he throws 30, 40 yards into empty space, and a receiver gets there to catch the ball ......... hopefully!
You can't really judge this game on just a short viewing time, you have to see it right through (commerial breaks and all unfortunately). OK, you'll get a bad, boring game sometimes, just like you can in any other sport.
I hope it's a good game and we all enjoy it.

    Go Pack Go!!!!

  • Comment number 69.

Quite frankly I don't care who wins tonight - I'm just hoping my night shift stays quiet so I can see as much of the game as possible.

  • Comment number 70.

@who-dat yh i watched the guide to american football on bbc interactive to get a better understanding. good things bbc don't air commercials so i can watch it the way through

  • Comment number 71.

@rocketty yh when i go to america in a couple of years i can say i support the packers and not feel out of place

Forget the fact 91Èȱ¬ don't have commercials, you're still going to have pointless chatter from the "experts" while the Yanks have their ad breaks

  • Comment number 73.

Oh hell Im a nervous wreck already!!!!

  • Comment number 74.

A bit less nervous now Rocketty????

  • Comment number 75.

In a way Im even more nervous! I have a long memory!

  • Comment number 76.

If they can't cut the penalties (and just as I start typing they say the same on 91Èȱ¬) the Steelers might as well go home now.

  • Comment number 77.

That was us last season with penalties (actually even worse)! We've improved immensely in that regard since.

  • Comment number 78.

If it carries on like this the winner will be the team that has 11 fit players left at the end.

  • Comment number 79.

We cant afford to lose Woodson. Ive seen us go cold in the second half too many times (Against Chicago a case in point.) Im worried that the Steelers will get a run game going if we have a depleted defence. Next score could be huge so we need a solid opening drive.

  • Comment number 80.

Hell I missed Shields going off too (during one of my many bathroom breaks!)

  • Comment number 81.

    Shields, Woodson & Collins

  • Comment number 82.

Oh I'm getting a bad feeling about this. This first possession I feel is big. We need to disrupt this Steelers momentum.

  • Comment number 83.

    Hell Jones again!!!!!

  • Comment number 84.

Ooooooooooooo - Game on for neutrals like me

  • Comment number 85.

the Packers always make it interesting.

  • Comment number 86.

    Neil,

Congratulations! I'd said in previous posts that you were riding the Packer bandwagon until the wheels fell off - they didn't and much respect for that. One of the best Superbowl games in history and a defining moment for Aaron Rodgers. Number 12 will become greater than Number 4 at Lambeau and I can see the Packers dominating the NFC for a good while yet.

Gotta love the entertainment too. L'Aguilera absolutely murdering the National Anthem, Fergie's singing was flatter than a rattlesnake's belly and the only thing that was worth a watch at half time was Eminen's Chrysler ad.

Top job as always, roll on next year!

  • Comment number 87.

hell yeah, go go packs and cheeseheads, whatever they are!

yeeeeeeeeeeh haaaaaaaaaaaaaaah and a god damn hot hot diggedgy diggedy dogs

touchdown! defense (sic)! defense (sic)! defense (sic)!

  • Comment number 88.

    Fantastic game!

  • Comment number 89.

I said God Daaaaayyyaaaaamn! Gimme a 'T'. Gimme an 'E'. Gimme an 'A'. Gimme an 'M'....GOOOOOOOOO TEAM! Woop Woop, Hell yeah!!!

  • Comment number 90.

Neil I'm happy for you that your prediction came right. In all honesty though i think you will admit that they were not the best team in the AFC or NFC, they rode their luck and is often the case the best team over the season doesn't win.

The biggest thing that irks me from the superbowl is that Rodgers was the MVP..........erm really? I think the person MUCH MORE DESERVING was Desmond Bishop..........yes DESMOND BISHOP.........watch the game again and I think anyone will agree with me. This is the BS that the NFL comes up with and it is a huge shame, because without it it would be a perfect world.
