R.I.P Jurassic 5

Post categories:

Mistajam | 22:00 UK time, Friday, 16 March 2007

As announced on Semtex's Friday Night Mixtape, Jurassic 5 have decided to call it a day after over a decade and a half of putting out that old skool flavoured Hip Hop.

While I've never been a major J5 fan, I worked with them on 'Work It Out' - a track they did with Supernatural and Joe Buhdha and they were highly professional and really nice guys. Power In Numbers was a baaad album and they really served a purpose within HipHop. No one else was doing their brand of feelgood, parent/student friendly hiphop and through them a lot of people have become HipHop converts.

What do you think though, great loss or not bothered?

Not being nasty... but who really cares? Apart from die-hard fans, they'll barely be remembered save for Jayou, and the fact that they bit the same style of finishing each others' lines that Leaders Of The New School bit from Cold Crush.

Their last album was monkey-chunder too... Dave Matthews? Come on now...

They had some great DJs though.

    LOL at Monkey chunder...!!

  3. 3.

Cut Chemist already left. The rappers are bland times bland. I have the first EP and the only thing off it I've played in the last decade is Lesson 4. So a "who cares?" from me.

anyone who thinks that this is not a big deal and has the "who cares" attitude is obviously not that much of a hip hop fan. j5 are among the best hip hop artists out there and their style of music by far outdoes that of many other bigger names in the industry. they were original, had great lyrics, great beats, very diverse tracks, from club bangers to radio friendly from chill out to latin sounding beats, they truly hit hip hop all over. the rappers them selves had stories to tell, and werent just rapping about gang violence and drugs and may i for one say they will be truly missed. R.I.P J5

In a hyper-aggresive scene displaying rank ignorance about hip hop's orinal ethos and vibe, J5 were a breath of fresh air.
We should offer thanks to them for never rhyming about their money and cars,
(like 80% of the dumb-@ss hip hop I have to endure) and for saying something positive.
    And Cut-chemist has SKILLS...

This is a shame in the rap game, J5 rocked with their different style and beats. I can't believe people think they were nobodys, they clearly ain't heard J5s best stuff. Anyways its a shame and I hope they come back in the future.

    Gutted... J5 Rock!
Have seen them live a few times and they were unreal, and in my opinion far more talented then many of todays main stream rappers. And for the record they didn't get booed off stage at Reading Festival... 50 sent did (in ten minutes). I appreciated the old school melodies, rhyming and rapping.

Bottom line is they should be respected & remembered!

I think I fall into the probably for the best category. Not because I don't rate them it's just because in truth they have fallen off. Sometimes I get the impression MC's are going to be putting out albums until they are 90 odd so its good they are quitting now - (Mr Carter will you please do us all a favour and stick to your promises to hang up the mic!) Losing Cut Chemist was a major blow and I agree that feedback was monkey chunder. That said they have left a decent back cat and the J5 EP is a classic - they had one of the best live shows too! Don't worry though I am sure positive hip hop will survive the loss.

'Power In Numbers' was a really heavy LP that people snoozed on... A lot darker than some of their other stuff.
Cut Chemist is a heavy artist and Chalie 2na is a big rapper.
    Good luck to em' innit?
Hopefully they've got a nest egg.

A sad day. The J5 LP was the first hip-hop album I bought, and was what converted me from indie to rap.
Their other albums may not have been as groundbreaking, but there was enough in them to make you bob your head on a packed commuter train to work.
Saw them 4 times over the past 5 years and they always put on a tight show. It was always party time when J5 came to town.
I for one will definitely miss them, but look forward to hearing their solo stuff.

Not only at the fact that J5 have split but at some of the comments on this board. J5 are all that is and should be aspired to be in hip hop. I find it somewhat amusing that people cannot be bothered by there split. Im not a anorak but what i own and have heard from the group is heavy. How can we be in uproar when someone like eminem threatens retirement but when a genuinelly talented and "real" collective split simply dismiss it. I would much rather hip hop lost some of those ego's and negativety than artists who where in it purely for the love of hip hop.
LETS TAKE IT BACK TO THE CONCREATE STREETS!

OMG - J5 split.. a sad day indeed

My first hiphop album was the J5 EP - and it converted me over to the whole rap scene.

Numark and Cut Chemist are two of the most talented turntablists around - blew me away the first time I heard them - completely changed the way i thought about music.

ORIGINAL BEATS AND REAL LIVE MC'S

    RIP J5

Honestly... who cares. I mean i've enjoyed a few tracks from the crew, but i guess this just isn't my flavor. It was just too backpackish for my ears. And stop pumping these kids up to be classic. Tribe Called Quest is classic. Lost Boys are classic. J5 is memorable, ya dig.

Jurassic 5 ARE hip hop. They represent everything about hip hop. I am genuinely upset at this news, they are by far my favourire group.

As for you idiots saying they are no good you clearly have no idea, i cannot understand how you can watch that 'what's golden' video above and not think that they are miles ahead of anyone else out there.

And as for seeing a performance live, no one comes close to the entertainment they provide! And the Dj's are rivaled by none.

Feedback may not be as good as their other albums but was still a good album especially in comparison to their competition.

And for the clown telling Jay-Z to retire! If a rapper is good why does his age make a difference?

I will soorly miss J5 and i am gutted to hear this news, i will be playing their tracks for many years to come, they are an important part of hip hop history.

Chali2na was only worth listening to in J5, he needs to come correct & stay in the game!!

Yo it's definitely a sad day for me and hiphop. The J5 EP was my 1st introduction to 'conscious' hiphop and they actually inspired me to start writing rhymes. Seen em 4 times and met 2na twice which was a dream for me. They rock shows the way it should be done and did hiphop for the right reason, 4 the 'LOVE'. People are always quick to diss em like they aint 'street' enough because sadly, it aint cool to be 'positive' or 'intelligent' in the hiphop world anymore. And cos there too 'oldskool' but tell me has hiphop really moved on since the days of PE? In a time when we've got kids getting shot and stabbed every week in the uk I think J5 will definitely be missed! Nuff respect J5

J5 is without doubt one of best Hip Hop groups to grace us with their sounds. Nuff said.

Big up J5 you WILL be missed

I agree that J5 had fallen off by the time they reached 'Feedback', but i still think they've left an important legacy... J5 LP is a classic, Quality Control - near, and Power In Numbers solid. As a fan since '97 i'm glad i finally got around to seeing them last year beofre it was too late...

    J5 = hapy memories
