Woods's return to winning ways comes at the right time

Iain Carter | 14:52 UK time, Monday, 26 March 2012

So much for "The Big Miss".

After his first PGA Tour victory in 30 months, Tiger Woods is once again golf's big hit. His five-shot win at Bay Hill was his first proper Tour win since his career was turned upside down by revelations about his private life.

This victory came at the start of a week in which the book written is published. "The Big Miss" is the most revealing account yet of Woods' life.

But the former world number one has spiked its guns with his dramatic return to winning ways. America loves a story of redemption and Woods has ensured that now the talk will be of his golf more than the revelations contained in Haney's book.

And the even more significant aspect of the timing of this victory is that it came in Woods' final outing before he challenges for a fifth Masters Green Jacket. He has sent a powerful message to the golfing world and to himself that he is back where he belongs at the top of the game.

Of course there are no guarantees. Woods won in each of his last appearances before majors and on all four occasions failed to go on to add to his tally of grand slam titles.

But walking the fairways with the newly installed world number six was a rare privilege last week. To see and hear the quality of his ball striking was to witness something very special.

From the tee he was imperious, relentlessly finding fairways and not sacrificing length in the process. From being one of the most erratic drivers on tour he has become one of the most reliable.

Woods's approach play was less spectacular. He found greens rather than pins, and it will need to be more precise at Augusta, but his putting grew progressively more reliable as the tournament went on.

Admittedly the top five players in the world skipped the Arnold Palmer Invitational but this was still a full-field event and the win is way more significant than his victory at his own limited-field event at the end of last year.

Woods will relish the fact that it is his golf rather than Haney's book that is the talking point heading towards the first major of the year.

He is entitled to feel that way because confidences were betrayed by his former coach in making so much of Woods's life public property. Haney admits that he knew Woods would be the last tour player he would teach and, by writing this book, he has ensured that will be the case.

It does not take away from the fact that the coach has composed a compelling read about a character who has never failed to fascinate the sporting public. For golf fans there are extraordinary insights into how Haney went about teaching the greatest golfing talent the game has ever known.

There are also anecdotes aplenty that portray a figure beset by social inadequacy. They are largely told within context which is something that was lost when advanced extracts of the book were published in various outlets.

Haney describes Woods's obsession with the military, his love of war-based video games and the tumultuous period in early 2010 when the 14-time major champion went into rehab for treatment for sex addiction.

But essentially it is a golf book and I suspect Woods will be more upset at the revealing of his trade secrets than anything else.

For me one of the most interesting revelations was when Haney detailed Woods reaction after winning for the first time under his tutelage. Haney notes that his player's then wife Elin said to her husband: "We have to celebrate. What should we do?"

Elin told Woods that in her time working as Jesper Parnevik's nanny there would always be a party to celebrate a victory for the Swede. Haney writes: 'Tiger slows down and looks at his wife. Gently but firmly he says, "E, that's not what we do. I'm not Jesper. We're supposed to win."'

I wonder whether Woods feels the same about his seventh Bay Hill victory? After all that has happened it was anything but a routine triumph and surely worthy of celebration somewhere in his still extraordinary private life.

Haney says that breaking Jack Nicklaus's record of 18 major victories is "now a tall order." He also says for it to happen Woods must win at least one major in 2012.

Having successfully shrugged off his latest Achilles tendon injury with eight rounds of golf in eight days, and capping that period with such an emphatic victory, Woods is entitled to feel winning more majors is firmly within his compass.

When he arrives at Augusta next week the 36-year-old knows the primary candidates he will have to beat. US Open champion Rory McIlroy and world number one Luke Donald head the list of those who have to be conquered.

All are in magnificent form which suggests the 2012 Masters will prove a vintage tournament. It has the potential to deliver a script more interesting than the one arriving on the bookshelves this week.

    Crikey ! 1st ?

A great win for Woods. He played with control. No one pressured him from the off though and I think this relaxed him. It bodes well for the masters if all the top players are potentially on form.

No good for my picks though :-(

  • Comment number 2.

Great to see Tiger back and all is looking so well set for a great Masters. Good to see Tiger playing solid golf on Sunday to win rather than feeling he had to do anything special.

  • Comment number 3.

HA HA well done Wib sneaking on first A good win for Tiger on a course he has always done well on. Going to have to get a copy of the book as have read an extract and that was a good read so hope the rest follows suit. G Mac in second bodes well for euro golf to. Hope he is on one of his hot streaks and might be a good bet for the Masters. Even the self styled clothes horse had a good week to finishing third.

  • Comment number 4.

Come on Iain Carter, McIlroy & Donald over Phil Mickelson who had 3 green jackets & countless high finishes heads the field of potential obstacles for Woods? Ridiculous, i understand there will be certain element of bias towards Euro players but that is cutting it thin.

As for Woods, it is good to have him back in the fold even though he's game is still a work in progress. As ratings goes up, sponsors will be more keen to get involved stateside after recent struggle of Hilton Head & Bob Hope Classic struggling to sponsors.

Great to see him back. What a year for golf with the likes of Tiger,Rory,Luke,Westy,
Kaymer,Gmac, and many more. Cant wait for the Masters!

  • Comment number 7.

@3, G-Mac looks backs to his best after may be a season of complacency thinking he could challenge weekly without adequate practice. It really is a lesson for a new major winner that they must comprise their practice schedule for invitations received & trimmings of winning a major championship.

As for Haney, i wouldn't buy that book, if it was purely about golf then i would have ordered it, personal gossips of another man's life don't interest me. Haney has shown himself to be a cheap man.

You what now? Donald & McIlroy are the top 2 in the world. Not Euro-bias, more like common sense.

Good blog Iain - I'd forgotten about Haney's book coming out now. Some posters of this parish were predicting that it's publication would be a devastating pre-Masters blow to TW. Doesn't look that way now.

That was great. I'm a Tiger fan and it's a big relief he's back - properly this time, one feels. Will he win more majors? Dunno. Main thing is that the greatest ever (more fact than opinion) isn't finished way too early.

Really looking forward to the Masters (always do, but maybe even more than usual this time). I hope Tiger wins but my money is on Rory Mac, who I sense is on his way to massive things in the game.

  • Comment number 11.

    Why the surprise?

Tiger won the Chevron World Challenge last December and he has been in the mix several times since then and lead tournaments. There was also his amazing 62 which he shot a few weeks back, his lowest ever score on the PGA Tour, so you knew he was ready to uncork one, right?

As for Haney, what great timing! His attempt at being the latest opportunist to make money off Tiger's troubles comes at the exact moment that Tiger wins again!! Way to go, loser! I hope your book tanks!

TW fanboy I most certainly am not but "low life" and "disgusting, big headed, classless cheater"? What has he done to you to deserve that?

How would you adjust the World Golf Ranking system then?

  • Comment number 13.

@5, So is Rory's win at Honda Classic diminished because Donald, Kaymer & Dustin J. didn't enter that tournament? or are you saying because someone won a tournament before, all they have to do is turn up to pick the trophy the next year? #delusional

  • Comment number 14.

@9, WGR are flawed no doubt but anytime a player is defending lesser points won in the previous season, the player can make big jump up in the current season if wins or score high finishes.

  • Comment number 15.

All about how Woods' approach play is behaving for the Masters I feel. He's clearly driving it well, but in the last couple of years his irons have often proved very ropey, and missing the greens at Augusta can be fatal. I'd say that if he played like he did this week he'll win.

@16 sorry yorkieboycanada but I'm complaining about your post, you can't imply that Woods is black power just because he is black. Disgraceful.

  • Comment number 18.

@11, one & two, two & one in OWGR doesn't interest me, their clutch ability to help them win majors & previous quality plays at Augusta however is of great interest to me. Mickelson knows these greens & attack sight lines than Rory & Donald. Period

  • Comment number 20.

@16, black power fanatic? I think you are inferring too much, never mind bringing race into this subject matter.

  • Comment number 21.

@14 SG07. Any WGR points that TW picks up over the next 13 months or so will be all "freebies" so to speak as he hasn't played in any tournaments and therefore has a clean slate. I daresay if he wins the Masters he may not be far off being no.1 !
When he was in his "prime" his WGR points were literally off the scale to everyone else.

@16 YBC. I don't personally like TW as a person but to be honest I've never heard any of his peers complain about thim. In fact they they sat he is one of the better players to have in your group. We all have our failings, and his are more magnified because of the status he holds. If he would just "come clean" and say that this is who I am, etc he would go up in my estimation.

  • Comment number 22.

    LordVoldemort
I never implied anything of the sort - I was making a comparison about a fist pump - Woods is in no way associated with that shameful organization and the fact that you even made that leap makes me wonder

  • Comment number 23.

    I think "yorkieboycanada" needs counseling.

  • Comment number 24.

22 @YBC. Unfortunately the way you commented originally that is exactly what it seemed like. It was the wrong analogy to use. 2nd attempt @19 was correct.

  • Comment number 25.

@22 why on earth did you mention black power then? Crazy.

  • Comment number 26.

Matte guess you will be smiling after Tigers return, though some jump back to all the previous press hoo ha about him, let it go and move on. The guy is and has been good for golf, the Masters def looks more interesting now. Sunday afternoon and Tiger with another Northern Irishman in the final group anyone fancy that ???

  • Comment number 28.

Hats off to Tiger for getting all the way back. However, he is often still behaving like a spoilt child on the course. The only person I have heard call him out on it is Tom Watson and I applaud him for it. He would soon stop if commentators shamed him for it - which is what he deserves. The game is WAY bigger than Tiger and he is shown WAY too much respect by the media. By not calling him out, I believe they disrespect the game.

  • Comment number 29.

Delight Woods won if he can get close to how he played previously then I can stop hearing all this chat about how brilliant Rory and Luke are. Luke and Rory between them last year won less than Tiger on an average year while competing in 3 times more tournaments. Not one of these guys get close to double figure ranking points TW was frequently in the 20s, the fact is that the rest are much of a muchness, TW is closing in on his 100th win. As for people talking about him as a person chances are 50% of the golfers out there cheat. As for him being arrogant great, I love it he is the best golfer the world has seen and worked under unrivalled attention, he has a right to be arrogant if he chooses, he makes other golfers better.

  • Comment number 30.

@29 sorry but Luke 9.87 and Rory 9.79 in the current rankings pretty near double figures and also the competition is a lot tighter now, Westwood is at 8.02 when Tiger was at the top no one was within about 3 points of him and also Rory and Luke will continue to build points this year and could well get into double figures.

  • Comment number 31.

@27 I actually agree with you a lot, but you don't have to phrase it in such provocative language.

Woods is an awful role model. Pretty good golfer though.

  • Comment number 32.

    @daveyboyflectcher

When Woods was top no-one was within 10 points of him, he'd be averaging over 20 points. In some of the lesser tournaments you only get 20 points for winning! Incredible.

  • Comment number 33.

@ 29 Also the more events you play can have a detrimental effect on your ranking hence though Casey did not play due to injury he did not fall down the rankings. Play and play badly and it has a worse effect than not playing.

  • Comment number 34.

"he has a right to be arrogant if he chooses, he makes other golfers better."

No one has that right - He is arguably the greatest golfer ever (not necessarily the most talented) but has come up woefully short of being deserving of that title.

In all honesty I really wish I could warm to him but he leaves me cold everytime he tees it up.

Of course it does not help matters when you have to watch the golf channel and Johnny Miller on NBC drivel on and on about how great he is as if there is no-one else playing the game. They never give much weight to any player unless they have won a PGA event in America and that for sure every other tour is second rate according to them!

  • Comment number 35.

    LordVoldemort #31

    Point taken

  • Comment number 36.

@ 34, i wouldn't use degrading words like "second rate" but i do believe pga tour is better because of how deep the field is hence it is much harder to win tournaments there than other tours.

good on you Voldy, I''ve never complained about a post but that was just over the limit. yorkieboycanada - I think we've got a good idea of your agenda now - shame on you!

I'm certainly no fan of TW (actually I thought the most shameful thing he did was agree to that advert featuring his late father, but there you go) but he's certainly no worse than 50% of the golfers out there.

  • Comment number 39.

    @37

What do you know about golf!
    Stick to Spanish football!!!

  • Comment number 40.

@30 they have scored these points while he has been away. If Tiger wins a major this year the chances are he will be ahead of them. These guys are not great golfers Donald is 2 years younger than Woods has won 11 titles An average of 1 per year. Rory 6 in 5 years. Tiger 99 in 16 no comparison.

@ 33 only if you play badly. He only plays in the big tournaments and rarely finishes outside the top 10.

  • Comment number 41.

    supergunner07

And yet the playing conditions in Europe are often more difficult than the States where many tournaments are closer to pitch and putt!
Also it does not explain the present dominance of non-Americans in the world top 50

However I do agree that it remains a challenge to win a PGA event

  • Comment number 42.

Lord V I knew he had a massive advantage over Mickleson when he was number two but it seems an age ago now. Point you make about ranking points is very true hence players once they get into the top of the rankings can pick and choose which events they play.

  • Comment number 43.

Good blog from Iain. On the ranking issue there was a time TW averaged around 30 pts, and i think Phil was the nearest at something like 15, so it show's how much he was dominating (given the nearest had more than any of the latest number 1's!!). TW always has a divisor of 40 events, where some guys are in the 50's.
I will not be buying or reading this book, in my opinion he has broken "rules", by detailing private information as such!!
Watched a lot of the golf, and TW looked really good on a very difficult set up (some of them pins at the weekend!!!!).
All bubbling up for Augusta nicely.

Yorkie BOY....Why do always come on talking about TW, has he "personally" done something wrong to you?????

  • Comment number 44.

" I think we've got a good idea of your agenda now - shame on you!"

Really and what agenda would that be? Speaking the truth? Tiger shamed himself, golf and most importantly his wife and family - That is the truth so get over it

  • Comment number 45.

Pity that TW is always being chastised for his private life. Fair, if the critics are interested in TW the person. Some critics should soul search as to the real reasons why they don't like TW. I wouldn't be surprised. For them all the other golfers out there are "clean"? People that live in glass houses ....... Or better still "let him who has not sinned throw the first stone .." I personally wish I could hit a few shots like TW; I'd be happy. Or maybe I cannot because I keep thinking of what a rotten character he is!!!!!!!!!

  • Comment number 46.

Yorkie BOY....Why do always come on talking about TW, has he "personally" done something wrong to you?????

No, nothing to me personally except to go against any sense of decency, honour and integrity

I apologise for not being a fan boy of his

  • Comment number 47.

@ 44 yorkieboy I think YOU'RE not the one getting over it!!

Yes, what he did was wrong, very wrong, but it was over 3 years ago now, he's said sorry, and the world has gone back to concentrating on his golf, unlike you.

  • Comment number 48.

@41, the question was never who has the best players? or was it? It was which one is a better tour, as for the golf courses, there are some averages ones on both tours as much as there are some very goods ones.

  • Comment number 49.

    Yorkieboycanada

Who are you to have a go at TW? Ask Elin if she would do it all again and I bet she would with the 100m she has now.

  • Comment number 50.

@46 ....Yorkie.... Well go and join some sort of infidelity site and express your opinions..better still comment over your side of the pond on the PGA tour report...PLENTY of haters to have a bit "insular" humour with.....if not just grow up and talk about "GOLF"!!!!!

  • Comment number 51.

    #8,

You are right. Common sense indeed. Why worry about Phil? After all, he only won 3 Green Jackets in the past decade? And a winner this season. What can he do? LD and LW know all about winning majors and will add to their major tally!!!

  • Comment number 52.

Good blog Iain. The most important thing is that this might influence some of our picks for the prediction league. Mine, anyway.

I don't think anyone can doubt that Woods is either the best of one of the best golfers ever (as with all sports it is hard to compare players from different era's). In his pomp it was always said that he could win with his B game. The question lately has been about his mental state, following his private-life revalations, and his physical state. He has certainly gone a long way to answering those, and shown that he is capable of adding to his major tally. I'm still not sure if he will beat the 18, but it wouldn't really surprise me if he stays fit.

By the way, I think it was Matte who asks on the last blog how the date of Easter is worked out. Well it is the Sunday after the first full moon after the equinox (although I think the exact definition of 'full moon' in this case is quite espteric in itself if I recall!).

  • Comment number 53.

    @49

That's a terrible argument. You're saying that TW shouldn't be criticised because he was forced to give away a lot of money to his ex-wife whom he utterly humiliated by sleeping with dozens of other women...hmmmm

  • Comment number 54.

"the question was never who has the best players? or was it? It was which one is a better tour, as for the golf courses, there are some averages ones on both tours as much as there are some very goods ones"

I agree - I was referring more to the weather condistions - It can be pretty bad sometimes in the States but I think on average the playing condistions are harder in Europe

However like I said - Pretty tough to win any PGA event whatever the conditions - BUT very rarely is an event won in and around Par unless it is the USO!!

Arsenal - Wouldn't mind asking her to be honest

LordVoldermort - Never really did apologise, just gave a bunch of excuses and it all revolved around him. I did not like him from day one and that remains the situation to this day -

  • Comment number 55.

Hmmm ... I'm sure you're not really that obtuse (well, maybe you are)

    #46
I don't know why you need to apologise (that's me being ironically obtuse by the way).

I'm no big TW fan - however may majors he might win, he's not in Jack Nicklaus' league (I've got a huge Don247-length essay on that subject to bore you with some day). I don't know TW and I'm guessing you don't either - obviously I don't condone his extra-marital activities but to say he goes "against any sense of decency, honour and integrity" might need is perhaps a wee bit over the top.

  • Comment number 58.

    @ 54 yorkieboy

Woods definitely did apologise, whether he meant it or not is another matter.

As for when you say, "BUT very rarely is an event won in and around Par unless it is the USO!!", that simply isn't true!

If my memory serves me correctly the two tournaments with the lowest winning scores on the euro/US tours last year were the Open (-5?) and Wentworth (-6).

True, the US Open is often low scoring but that's because they artifically make it very difficult - at the Open the weather conditions are the course's defence, which IMHO makes it more a more interesting challenge than having to hack out of ridiculous rough two yards from the fairway.

  • Comment number 59.

OK I know my last sentence doesn't make sense - I'm busy cooking and we all know men can't multi-task

  • Comment number 60.

@58 As for when you say, "BUT very rarely is an event won in and around Par unless it is the USO!!", that simply isn't true!

Sorry, what I meant was that the majority of the PGA tour events are won by being well under par because the courses are set up to allow players to go for it as this helps viewing numbers expecially among "casual" watchers of golf

I'm of the school of thought that a hard fought par can be just as exciting to watch as a relatively easy birdie on a par 4 or par five

  • Comment number 61.

Iain's blog also referred to the "top 5" did not play Bay Hill, has anyone seen their respective records at Augusta?? (especially Kaymer)

@52 BMG Greatpoint about his mentality,I think it will make a big difference to his overall game as I'm sure he was starting to doubt himself a little after playing himself into contention a few times recently but then falling away in the final stretch(something which was unheard of at his peak )

Perfect scenario for the Masters as I said before Donald and Mickleson followed bt Wooods and Little Mac in the final pairing,my monies on Donald, and I wouldn't count Westwod out just yet.

  • Comment number 65.

@63...manina....How you doing...I think with regards to the prediction league we should have double points (ie 20 for the win) and have 5 picks, only because i have picked the last two winners!!! Just had to get that in because i was being ridiculed not to long ago!!! The two extra picks should get points (maybe3) if they finish top 10...Just for major's i might add.

  • Comment number 66.

You people who think that golf begins and ends with Woods can hype all you like but he'll never replace Jack as the king for the simple reason that Jack represents all that's good about the history of the game and Woods represents all that is bad about the modern game.
There was an old hollywood joke that went--"The difference between Sinatra and Dean Martin is, Sinatra thinks he's god, whereas Martin knows he is".
In The case of Nicklaus, he never thought of himself as other than a very good golfer. Woods, on the other hand also believes he's god.

Very good and unbiased blog Iain. I think that this was a very significant win for Tiger. I don't for a minute believe that Tiger ever thought that someone else was better than him at golf......but he has to prove it.....this was a big step. His 62 on the final day 3 weeks ago was also significant.

This, and his 62, were done on difficult courses and in tough conditions which helps us remember one of Tiger greatest attributes as a golfer....he's a grinder (no witty quips please).

I also like how the blog notes the quality of his ball striking, time and time again he hit great long irons and GMac didn't cave in like the rest, proof that his swing is standing up under pressure. Also his putting looked solid. I think that everyone else should be scared. We could be entering a second period of Woods dominance. I've always believed that he has more golfing ability than any other golfer out there....including McIlroy. I would put him favorite for the Masters.

    1. Woods
    2. McIlroy
    3. Mickleson
    4. Donald
    5. Westwood
    6. Bradley
    7. Simpson
    8. Schwartzel
    9. McDowell
    10. Rose

PS Shame Ernie didn't make it otherwise he would have been in the mix. But he did blow it in both tournaments.......should win later this year.

  • Comment number 70.

I had a feeling Iain's blog ( quite rightly) would lean towards TW this week. I also assumed that the random's would come on from other blogs and have a pop..... I suggest TW for the Masters, nailed on favourite along with Rory (?).

  • Comment number 71.

PS Shame Ernie didn't make it otherwise he would have been in the mix. But he did blow it in both tournaments.......should win later this year.

If he wins this week I think he gets to enter or he might be offered an invitation. I would like to see that

I have to disagree about Bay Hill being that tough a track - The par 5's are all reachable in two and the rough is not that deep - Do agree though that Woods was in control but I do think that McD putted poorly on the last day when he had a couple of shortish putts that he missed at crucial stages.

@71.....McDowell's approach play was the main cause, but given the players (and scoring) comments, pin positions, wind...I think it played really tough over the weekend. Major esque was "quoted"!!!

Matte hope this is the shape of things to come from tiger and not a false dawn, he will imo be there abouts at the masters as he always is. Regarding els if he wins this week he will make Augusta last chance saloon.

Dear football fanatic, you may not believe this but many, many ladies marry for love rather than money. When the man they love loses their respect then no amount of money will compensate them. Would a lady remain in love with a poor man who loves, honours and respects her or go through what Erin did for cash? That's a no-brainer.

I would love to see GMAC win at the masters to prove he is not a one major man. Also it would nail his place in the Ryder cup team. He is one of those players as I said earlier who seems to play really well in bursts then goes off the boil. He was for me the best euro player in the last two Ryder cups.

mattefc Great pick of woods also had Bubba tied 4th.
Just had a quick look at the latest odds for Augusta, Woods now 7/2 favourite with a certain online bookmaker followed by
Little mac 5/1,mickleson 12/1 donald 14/1 westwood 18/1 and rose 30/1 gmac not a bad shout at 60/1 but my outside bet might be Sandy Lyle or Ian Woosnam both available at 1000/1

The site is showing els at 66/1 but like somebody asked earlier ,did he qualify ?
I read Paul lawrie kept his position in the top 50 and will be going to Augusta

  • Comment number 78.

Manina GMAC 60 - 1 like the look of that mind I also think westy might go well to esp as there will not be so much interest in him this year, last year he was no 1.

Now, onto the subject of Iain's blog. First, a public apology for slating him last week. The events of this week have proved he was on the money with his previous blog. Keep 'er lit, Iain.

As regards, TW, I am certainly among the tail enders when it comes to his fans. I personally would have been quite content had he never won again. It's just one of those things - I have never warmed to the man despite his golf. There is no denying his ability but I was never a fan. The way he conducts himself, the fist pumping, the yelling, the snarling expressions, club throwing and bad language on the course just don't do it for me. Others find that quite acceptable and that's fine with me.

Having said that, his win at the weekend was quite exceptional. I doubted on previous blogs about his ability to keep it going down the stretch on a Sunday but he held it together well - even if GMAC didn't quite exert the pressure we hoped he would. TW was the one applying the pressure so good for him.

Will he win at Augusta? Probably not IMHO but he will be there or thereabouts on the Sunday. For too long there has always been the feeling it will be Woods or some relatively unknown player to feature strongly in the majors but we have now a group of maybe 8-10 players who can all genuinely call themselves contenders. That's good for golf and will definitely spice up the Masters quite nicely. For what it's worth the ones I think are in that group are:

Woods, McIlroy, Mickleson, Donald, Schwartzel, Adam Scott, KJ Choi, Justin Rose, Westwood & Stricker.

I'm not saying they all CAN win it but on Sunday afternoon they are the people who should be in contention.

Daveyboy The problem is I only got 15/2 for Mickeson and 80/1 for Oosthuizen(currently 100/1) BUT got 20/1 for donald. I just hope bookies give best price at start of the tournament

i forgot to mention earlier it was nice to see the bog !!! open earlier than normal

  • Comment number 81.

Manina nice one yeah the bog opened early for business haha. Perhaps tiger should advertise Marmite that would just be great!

  • Comment number 82.

mattefc Forgot to ask did the beeb get back to you on your comment last week ? and
do you know about any more beer offers ? I'm getting a little low the kids (they are old enough to vote before somebody has a go at me) seem to have got a taste for beer/lager instead of there usual alco-pop rubbish and it's MY supply they seem to like !!!

  • Comment number 83.

@81 davey I would get get a copyright pretty quick for that idea, just wish I'd thought of it, might i suggest he starts thinking of Just for Men !!!!!! or is it me who needs that.

  • Comment number 84.

Davey..How you doing fella, I think TW is the man to beat at Augusta!!!

Trev...Who do you think will dude, if not TW?

  • Comment number 85.

On here he def has A Marmite effect but wouldn't it look great on the side of his bag and would show he had a sense of humour. The point is whatever people think of him he is good for the game, and he plays at a level most can only dream of.

  • Comment number 86.

#84 - Money's on Rory although Schwartzel could be in with a good shout - problem there is that very few have ever defended at Augusta. (Arise Sir Nick!)

  • Comment number 87.

Matte yeah I think tiger will be the man to beat at Augusta. Who ever wins will now not only have the course but tiger to beat and will need to play at the top of their game

  • Comment number 88.

    @79

Finally a sensible comment, I like you am not a great fan of Mr Woods mind you he has made me a lot of money by either winning. Or more recently not winning. It saddens me to say I will be sorry if he ever gets to Jacks record. Pre the meltdown I was ambivalent to the guy he's a great golfer one of the best pressure putters I have ever seen however that does not mean I have to like the person. I never liked Faldo either he had no charisma, Woods just was plain rude to people. Seve there was a champion and a nice person, though people like Curtis Strange may disagree.
No I like you would have been happy to never see him win another major I have gone on record on Yahoo blogs and here in the past to say I didn't think he would win more than 2 more anyway. Those will be either at Augusta or at St Andrews. Other than that I couldn't see him winning a US open or British open because his driving was so erratic. Its interesting that he seems to have sorted that out a bit hence why he is back in contention. You certainly cannot play golf in the USA out of the rough, I know I lived there for 5 years. I noticed he is not trying to hit the cover off the ball anymore. He was the last two years, I think he was believing his own hype about how far he has to hit it. Maybe the injuries have taught him to slow things down a little (relatively vs us mere mortals).
I don't think he will win the masters this year, he will be top ten but unlike in his prime there are a lot more very very good youngsters in contention. I have had my usual bet for the last two years today. I bet that woods will not win a major this year. I think its a braver one than last year but the odds shot up this morning. I stuck a fair old bet on it!

  • Comment number 89.

@ manina....Dont think i can get involved with the "POLICE" watching but i will have a go.....very strange weather systems have dragged southern europe temperature's over britain for a period of time!!! therefore inducing a lack of "scoops" available and shops running dry (like reservoirs), but you can still get a phenonamal offer for 5 great poundoolies at a certain scoopermarket until early April!!!!

  • Comment number 90.

BTW - Congratulations to Michael Hoey - another winner from the fair Isle yesterday!!!

  • Comment number 91.

@mattefc i know you said tiger but what about your other 2/3 picks.
I'm going to stick with LD PM and louis O as I've put money on them but I agree with daveyboy that LW might sneek in with everybody looking at the big 4 (ranking position and past )and i might have to revisit the bookies before the tournament starts

@daveyboy Gmac 25/1 to win the Houston (shell) Open .only LW, PM and Stricker in the field showing a bit of form might be worth a flutter ,think I'll sleep on it first though

  • Comment number 92.

Matte had not heard the term scoops in A while my old neighbour was from your neck of the and he used to say it. Check out a certain good with food joint for some ale offers:)

    #79 & 88

Excellent posts chaps - I'm kind of in the same mindset as you. Whatever you think of TW, you have to admire his single-mindedness and, frankly, his talent and the fact he has succeeded in a white-dominated sport.

I probably wouldn't want to go out to the pub with him, but I still admire him (mostly).

    Over to the night-shift now

  • Comment number 94.

just tried to post and it said there was a profanity in it....is hotter one of them

  • Comment number 95.

    Obviously not

  • Comment number 96.

Manina Westy won the shell open 2 years ago which was the start of his run to the top. I would prefer G Mac to come good the week after as I feel he is a bit under rated esp as his mate has stolen the limelight lately. I still wonder though if his decision to play full time on the Us tour was the best. Have a feeling though if he does start to struggle to make the Ryder cup team he wont chance it and will play in europe to make sure he gets in, he did hint at this when he made decision to play the US tour.

  • Comment number 97.

mattefc & daveyboy CHEERS !!!!!!(literally speaking ) for the update
looking @88 paul I wonder what odds you will get on

    mickeysausage coming back
bilo organising the golf day (I have faith in you Bilo and look forward to your BIG announcement this week)
    Iain Carter posting again

  • Comment number 98.

manina...I think louis oost will join the one band major brigade, done nothing before/after St Andrews really to make me think otherwise...

84641...I would love to go the pub with TW, imagine if he opened up after a few stella's!!!!!

  • Comment number 99.

Davey.....Wha is your take on players playing 2 events running prior to a Major...ie Mickelson, McDowell....

  • Comment number 100.

Perhaps the scorcerer turned mickey into a sausage literally, Mr Carter is prob still in the states. Lucky man prob does not come home till after the Masters.
Players I think will go well at Augusta Woods Obv, Rory, Westy, Dustin Johnson, Keegan Bradley.
