Welcome to our Davos Blog

Over the next week we will try to give you a feel for what it's like to be at the schmoozefest of the world's movers and shakers.
The annual World Economic Forum in the Swiss mountain village of Davos is an intense event, with more than 2,400 participants from 90 countries.
For me, it will be the fourth time in Davos, and I'm still trying to find the remote control that allows me to get on top of it.
Sessions are packed so tight - the first starting before 0700, the last ending after midnight, and sometimes eight or nine running in parallel - that I constantly wish for a magical Davos remote that allows me to press "pause", just to give me a few minutes to think and write - without missing all the other meetings, debates and networking in the Congress Hall and surrounding five star hotels.
One thing is sure: When I stroll through this nuclear bunker that is doubling up as a conference centre, I will suffer once again from constant deja vu.
Most people look strangely familiar, not least because they are. You would recognise them too - from business magazines, newspapers, and news bulletins on television.
The ultimate schmoozer and Arch-Davos man, however, will be absent. Former US President Bill Clinton, has decided not to come (although he will attend at least one lunch by video link).
No explanation has been given, but I can't shake the feeling that his wife might make a surprise appearance. It would be a nifty move, given that last weekend she .
Whatever happens between Wednesday and Sunday, my fellow blogger Richard Sambrook, the 91热爆's director of global news, and I will try our best to give you a flavour of this unique event.
Of course, there being just two of us we won't quite be able to bring you the riches supplied by our technology colleagues who blogged from the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
We are looking forward to your comments and questions. Join us in the fun of Davos '07.

Has anything been said on the Environmental Sustainability Index (ESI) that is annually presented at Davos by Yale University and Columbia University? (See www.yale.edu/esi/). The Index shows the environmental situation of more that 150 countries, and is meant to be displayed alongside the Economic Competitiveness Index.
Best wishes

The youngest people at Davos this year will be a group selected by the British Council Greenwich 2007 conference participants last week. It would be great if you could find them and report the youth angle to Davos 2007!

Are any of the declared or likely US Presidential candidates slated to make an appearance, on panels or just as an attendee?
You might be right about Sen. Clinton though she's claiming that she's focused on being a Senator rather than a candidate.

See if you can find out about foreign buyout plans for the US, especially in regards to infrastructure and what would be termed 'essential industries, defense-related companies, and ports, banks and financial companies.
Also, what is happening and planned in regards to Western owned banks instituting Sharia law departments in the Middle East and within the EU countries and in the US.This is really underreported outside of the Middle East. We need to know if these sections will only permit Muslims to participate? Will they discriminate against non-Muslims, meaning the Islamic Law
forbids charging interest and will this mean the rest of the customers will have to make up for those in the Sharia Department? How is this being handled? Naturally, security is paramount in relation to the banks.
What is being considered in relation to combating terrorist groups? What, if anything, are Russia, China, Iran,
Saudi Arabia doing in this context?
I'll be looking for your reports Thank you for your consideration.
