Hot security, served ice cold

It's gone cold at long last, which ensures that the snow we've had during the past 30 hours will stay for good.

Last night temperatures were supposed to reach minus 22 C. Can't confirm that, but it's certainly very very nippy here.

One can only feel sorry for the hundreds of police officers and security guards who are standing in the bitter cold, manning the security barriers surrounding the conference centre and other key venues.

As always, security is very tight. Last night, as a shuttle bus I was travelling on went through one of the numerous check points, one of the participants said: "Security is getting worse and worse."

"No", another participant said, "it is getting better and better".

The key point is, he said: "Do you want to be a statistic, or do you want to be a participant?"

With so many rich and powerful people in one place, the Swiss hosts don't take any chances.

It will certainly make them think about whether or not their cause is worthy enough to brave the conditions.
