From the autobahn...

Aled | 19:14 UK time, Thursday, 8 June 2006

AledWell we've just arrived in Germany after what I'm sure would have been a lovely flight if the pilot hadn't decided to dip the plane a little faster than I would have liked during landing! What, did he hear the show this morning and thought It'd be a bit of a laugh to scare us?

Chris was at the front of the plane, Matt, Rach, Dave and Carrie were in the middle and Jocelin and I were at the back and still I spotted Chris' hand shoot up to turn the air-vent on - so I know he appreciated the dip just as much as I did!!!

It's amazing just how much construction there is going on at the moment in Germany. We landed in Stuttgart in southern Germany and everything looks either new or is still being built. I'm typing this as we're in our cars on the way to our chalets/chav camp. Carrie's on the phone setting up tomorrow morning's interview with a certain famous footballer or other (I really have NO idea) and Nick, one of our engineers, is driving. 060608_ob_ausfahrt_125.jpg
I find myself asking really stupid questions "how do you pronounce that?", "is fahrt really pronounced fart?", "so you can drive through red lights?" and so on while Nick really isn't impressed. I've noticed his knuckles are going white as he's clinging for dear life as crazy Germans shoot past us at a 100mph (sorry, 150kph ish), so this is what it's like driving on those famous no-speed-restriction autobahns!

We're not far from what will be our new home for the next month so better go. Chris has said that he's interested in making a blog soon, so look out for that!

Aled

Hiya Guys, being a squaddie living here in Germany, you get used to the language, lots of hofs, farts, lischs and Stuff, There are even towns called Wank (down south in the ski area and one near Venlo called Wankum.
As for the Autobahns, you get used to the speeds, the weekends are best because it seems everyone goes out to see if they can redline their cars, 100mph is taking it easy. I've done 170 on a bike and been passed by Porsche's BMWs and Sporty Mercs.

Have fun out here guys, and try to pop into a camp if you get a chance, we all love you guys.

Heh I wondered about the "fahrts" too when I was in Germany 2 summers ago visiting my sister. I saw it seemingly everywhere - things like "Einfahrt freihalten" and on my rail tickets.

Well Aled, don't have so much fun playing fifa (or rosie and jim games) on the generic games console that you forget about your swimming! Your learning to swim has inspired me to do the same thing and was rally glad to hear your doing a mile for sport relief in the pool.

Very interesting web blog. I am waiting for the first game between Germany VS Costa Rica and Ecuador VS Poland. I think Poland and Germany will win these games although it will not be easy victories. Tomorrow, I turn in my first blog article on the World Cup for Univision TV.

Hey Aled,

I listened on the way to work this morning - sounds like you guys really have it rough out there in the Vaterland!
Back here the atmosphere is beginning to build towards the game tomorrow - I couldn't believe how empty the roads were this morning, I reckon half the population must be over there with you.
Lots of the German language appears to refer to farting.. perhaps that will contribute to the atmosphere over there...

You sure the accelerated landing wasn't casused by Chris sitting at the front of the plane. i though they would have put him over the wings, somewhere near the middle? ;-)

Hi Aled,

now that you mention it, "Fahrt" is really pronounced "fart". It never occured to me before...

By the way, the idea with this blog is great! Keep up the good work. I am really looking forward to the shows, the blogs and the pictures in the next weeks!

I hope you all enjoy your stay in our country, even if we do drive a bit to fast sometimes ;-)
