A Shopping Tale Of Two Halves.

Chris Evans | 17:54 UK time, Monday, 20 December 2010

Morning : brilliant

Afternoon : war zone (well you know what I mean)

Pressie shopping in central London this morning, no one to be seen. Absolute bliss. Bound to be the same tomorrow. Make the most of it, I was done in under an hour.

Food shopping in Windsor this afternoon however - forget it !

"Has it been like this all day ?" I asked a nice kid who was re loading the sprout shelves.

"It's only gonna get worse," he sighed.

Trolley rage was waiting around the corner of every aisle. Exasperation ruled supreme. By the time I finally reached the checkout I was physically shaking with grocery-a-phobia.

And I forgot the dill.

D'oh !

No trolley rage here Chris, due to being unable to get out.

Not a single vehicle has gone down our road today, just someone on skis, totally true!

I've really enjoyed my unexpected day off, but don't know how long it would be before I got a bit stir crazy.

    Tell me about it Christoff.

There are unsuspectin' victims within a 10-mile radius of Wigan Sainsbury's, unaware that they owe their un-lacerated, un-chafed ankles to ME, as I have Renee quarantined in the snow, therefore said psychopath is unable to swing a trolley full a cabbage, economy beans an' Tena Ladies round the aisles, scythin' people down like an Octogenarian Boadicea. There will also be some sliced loaves left unmolested by probin', heat-seekin' digits, checkin' for buggin' devices an' bogus asylum-seekers. Not to mention that the chap at the fish counter will be enjoyin' an uncomplicated afternoon not confronted by anythin' grumpier-lookin' than 'is red mullet.

    Peace an' Love yous lot.

For goodness sake Chris - you forgot the Dill?? And I bet you had a list.

Son-in-law did his Christmas shopping for gorgeous daughter's presents on Friday. Honestly, what a performance - he mumped for days, wrote a list, went in and did it in half-an-hour.

    Hiya MTF and Clodagh.

Clodagh, good to see you doing your bit for world peace!! Keep it up Champ!

From my 5 mins in town today, we're going to need as much help as we can get!

MTF Sounds like it's been awful down your way today. So pleased you were tucked up safe.

    Evening Dandy Dahlinks!

Now, I admit it .... I am a birdbrain! I've left my notepad at work with the Advent guesses on it, but I'm pretty sure ewe don't have a winner today, as Window #20 revealed a white dove.

4 more windows to go ...!

CLP, we did our food shop yesterday pm. Just the non prishable and long eat-by date stuff (gammon!!). Sadly, the rest of Cannock had the same idea - even at 3.45 on a Sunday when ELH was announcing it was closing in 15 minutes, it was heaving. Ugh!!

I shall do the "brussell sprout run" for the fresh fresh stuff after work on Thursday, and pick the Venison up from the farm shop butchery on Thursday lunchtime. Then that's us done. To the rafters. Shut the door, don the jimjams, open the sherry and bring it on!

Interview this evening went ok, I think. Hard to tell really, but I would really like the job! Tomorrow pm interview postponed until the New Year due to weather, which works in my favour to be honest as I should have an idea about today's one by the time inerviews are re-scheduled.

    It's all go, innit!

MTF - you take it easy. Saw your neck o'the woods on the news and it looks blimmin' vile. I suspect Puffball was glad of the day off too!

Clodagh - give her an extra large schooner of Croft Original and she'll be fine!

Annie - hope you're ok too, and not too snow bound norf o'the border.

Just been watching the news on the bloomin' weather. Those poor people trying to get home for Christmas - feel so sorry for them.

    Howdedoody Bingo

Deevs, am totally fed up with the snow. Gawd knows what my heating bill will be.

Had little boys today as they have a bit of the lurgy and not at school. 8yr old couldn't believe his luck - 'Am I dreaming' he said to his mum, hang on, nipped himself and said 'No, not a dream, it's reality'

Planet Matthew - wish I lived on it. Got them tomorrow too, then they're finished for Christmas.

    Hi everyone.

Its very unusual for us to get snow, yet alone so much of it.

Its given me a taste of what others have suffered, except that I haven't had to go out in it. However if it continues, I may be borrowing the neighbours skis as supplies of Scrumpy jack are zilch. It could be a very dry Christmas!!

Seza, we have got the fire roaring away here, our logs are singing! Some of them have got fossilised snails on them, I have tried to remove them, but they are stuck like glue. I know they can hibernate for years, I hope its not them singing.

Annie, I hope the little uns soon feel better and keep the lurgy to themselves.

Deevs, lets hope this is the 'one' and we'll all give a big whoop whoop for you, come the new year.

Evenin niceties right back at you Bingo. Have heard of lots of jack knifed trucks today. Its no fun being out on the roads when its like this eh!

Peace and love to you Clodagh.

Just off to read up on skiing, back in a mo.

Annie, when do your boys break up for their hols? Kept hearing today about schools closed due to the weather but locally, they broke up on Friday

  • Comment number 12.

    Evening All,

Well it's snowing again in North Kent, but that's the first time since Saturday so mustn't grumble; and a bit of a thaw did kick in to day which was good news.

I went to the bottom slapping supermarket a week ago Friday and said to the check out lady I wasn't coming back until New Year! I am in the fortunate position of going to my parents for Christmas, so don't have to worry about buying stuff for that and the rest, to keep me going, I can collect locally.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I really enjoyed The Nativity. Going back to the other blog, I don't think I ever played Mary. My Dad was the Sunday School Superintendent, so it would have been favouritism to cast me in the lead role! I think I either played the recorder of narrated. However, I was Twigwidge, the sprite of the chestnut tree, in a primary school play - not sure if that counts?

I've just had a lovely bowl of apple crumble and custard and am waiting for Miranda to begin.

    Stay safe and warm everyone.

  • Comment number 13.

Sezza, they're finished tomorrow lunchtime, although little boys are staying with me tomorrow because of the lurgy. So that means Little Big Planet all day.

I should have said, Deevs, good luck with the interviews. What's for you, won't go past you' in the words of my Gran.

Hopefully I'll be hitching a lift in daughter's car (which is parked on the main road) on Wednesday to go to ELH, or I'll be having a very dry Christmas too MTF

Ok Annie, They seem to break up earlier round here. Wish they wouldn't. Think it's better for them to have the extra time after Christmas

Don't talk to me about the shops Chris, ikt was bad enough last week when my home delivery arrived minus the toilet rolls, I finally got them the next day after a number of phone calls, we were down to the last one. Anyway a nice man turned up at the door with a full explaination and apologies and bearing the said bog rolls.

I'm going to do my shopping on Thursday which I do most weeks because it's quieter than Friday or Saturday and this Friday I wouldn't even contemplate it.

Don't worry about the dill Chris, nobody will care after a few mulled wines or whatever.

Abit early for me ,so just left with the fresh bits to get .
And yes I have plenty of the loo rolls and Kitchen rolls to tide us over.

We've had rain here tonight so that means a little of the snow has gone ,so with a bit of luck it won't be too bad tomorrow, and hopefully that will be it for a few days .

    Morning all.

It was so blimmin cold last night, I had an early night. We still have very deep snow and no vehicles have ventured down the lane yet.

Mr Mobs is going to venture on foot to the road (not a main one) to see if anyone has successfully driven that, although that means a steep up and down to get onto the main road a mile away.

Has anyone else had any fresh snow over night? I know the forecast said it was heading east from us.

Right, first priority is to feed the birds who are tapping at the window, poor mites living out in these horrendous conditions. I have left the shed door slightly open and I think the robin has been taking refuge in there.

    Morning,

Yay, Well done JG xx don't leave it too late to go home will you.

mtf, Are you grounded again today? xx

    Big hugs to all those feeling poorly {{{}}}

I have a theory about colds! I don't interact with children a lot i.e. not a mum, school teacher, or grandparent and I don't travel on public transport - these are sure fire ways of catching colds. So far I've been cold free, but that's not to say that the minute I finish work on Friday that I won't be struck down as my body finally relaxes!! But I shall be well stocked up on cold remedies and of course I shall be at my Mum and Dads for some TLC should the cold strike.

There seems to be a big defrost going on here. My car was still snowed in so I walked but the ground was quite slushy. Although looking out of the window the clouds look very grey.

All alone in the office today so I shall be popping in and out - you've been warned.

    Hi everyone:

Can I say to all of you badly affected by this ruddy snow and ice: you have my sincere sympathy. My only advice to those snowed in, just try to accept it, it's not your fault. And this a perfect opportunity to sort out the "messy drawer"/DVD and music collection/whatever!

Seriously, though, I know it is no joke - I would think we will be going nowhere come Christmas Day.

We did make it through to Edinburgh last Friday for our office Christmas lunch, and very merry it was too! However, I am glad to report I was Mrs Sensible and was back in Glasgow for 8pm, hit the pub for a quick sharpener, and then was home for 9.30. Must be my age, I remember with fondness the Christmas party days of being in a taxi queue at 1am, wearing a Santa hat!

Hope everyone is ok - I can't catch up since last Thursday.

(at the mo ....!)

The writing isn't happening at the mo Seza. There's just not enough hours in the day in my "new life", but I'm not complaining. I'm sure the ideas running around my head will make it onto paper one day ....!

    Afternoon folks,

Well, no more snow here, but terribly frosty. I must have walked ten miles this week , from my desk to the door and back, to shut the door, after everyone just wanders in and out.

I was out in the garden in my dressing gown at 7.15am to try and catch sight of the eclipse but it was too cloudy. However, i got to work and saw the most amazing sunrise. I had my camera with me and took some gorgeous piccies. Will loads them on FB tonight if anyone is interested.

Right, off to do stuff. Talk about winding down, we are bizzy liddle bees in here today.
