THE NAME'S DOPPLEGANGER ...DOUBLE 'O' DOPPLEGANGER.

Chris Evans | 15:05 UK time, Monday, 20 October 2008

Had a week off - read a book. I think maybe that's what...

...weeks off are for.

Devil May Care was the book. James Bond and all that you know but not by Mr. Fleming, by Mr. Faulks writing "as" Ian Fleming. Yes really, that's what it says on the front cover, Sebastian Faulks writing as Ian Fleming.

The former has undertaken the challenge of creating a literary impression of the latter, how clever, but does it work ? You bet your golden gun it does. I flicked through some old Bond books to check.

Of course if you think about it, it shouldn't be that difficult a thing to do, if you can write in the first place and if you are well versed in your subject in the second place. All still very clever though.

This got me to thinking however, I remember when, during a particularly slow fifth day at a test match somewhere - probably Trent Bridge, Graham Gooch, whilst bowling, started doing impressions of other more well known England bowlers. It was hilarious, especially his take on Bob Willis, his trailing arm flapping in the wind behind him. This then got me thinking, whether Lewis Hamilton could drive a lap "as" Fernando Alonso, whether Steven Gerrard could take a free kick "as" David Beckham, whether John Marsh could give a bulletin "as" Alan 'Deadly' Dedicoat. Could you do whatever it is you do like someone who does it as well, someone who you see every day ?

In our gang, no one can zip off for a sneaky fag qicker than South African Suzie, no one can laugh suddenly and then continue like a drain for no apparent reason like Adam 'All, no one can stand on a chair and sing from the musicals like our Exec Producer Hells Bells and not wonder that we all think she's insane, which she is. Helen by the way is currently getting stressed about a new stress test that has arrived in the office. The more stressed it says she is, the more stressed she is becoming.

It's good to be back.

Can't recall any names off the top of my head but I have always wondered why famous authors write under another name!
And tell Helen to chuck the stress test away - that would be a good stress buster.

Welcome back Christoff Lambie Pie. And next time yous decide to bog off just as I land back from me latest missionary trip to County Monaghan, kindly check with me first would yous, Renee's had me parked in front of Paul O'Grady all week.

As for the mimicry, I can't help myself with certain friends; if I have to relate some tall tale concerning a mate I always descend into character. It's people's foibles that make them interesting, n'est-ce pas.

Like when I'm in the doghouse with the Genius daughter. I always know when I've crossed the line and am about to go on to the naughty step, and can mimic this perfectly. The eyes half close and the top lip gets slightly sucked in, rather like Miss Piggy just before the HARRRRRUMPH. Hurrah.

Not that I myself have any foibles. I, of course, am perfect and flawless.

  • Comment number 12.

    Just remebered the PPPPS.....

CLP - If yer thinking of beating Apple or Pixie as a crayzeee name for your soon ter be littlen.... what about Doppleganger???@?!!!?!

  • Comment number 13.

    Oi ... I'm still here y'know....!!!

In the case of the majority of motor sports people, I think it's best the leathers a kept well and truly ON !! Skill, bravery, madness - all words to sum up the likes of Rossi, Capirossi, Bayliss, Hamilton, Coultard etc. But good looking?? Nah. 'cept James Toseland. Now he is a bit of a peach. And a classically trained pianist to boot. Can't be bad!

Super_bagpuss #3 - yes, I was thinking of the "New" Virginia Andrews as I was reading CLPs post.

I've never really "got" impressionism (no, not Renoir, Monet etc). The likes of John Culshaw, Alistair McGowan etc - famous for pretending to be other people. That's just weird.

Midway thru Love Actually. Rain beating on the window. Still feel like the living dead tho - really sick actually. Boo.

    Hello to everyone else!

    Cheryl xx

  • Comment number 14.

Aye, I 'ope Doppleganger doesn't mean anything bad.... better look it up in the dictionary..... BIG 'polgies if it does..... no offence mean't CLP... ignore me #12!!!!

Welcome back Christophe and...morning everyone (in the style of Richie Benot, and that's all I can say...)!!!

Good to have you back yay!

So didja see the Joanna Lumley thing last night? Didja??? It was terribly good, if a little sad...Ian Fleming seemed to be a much maligned character, and even his wife didn't like his books...although she was comfortable enough being Mrs Fleming I think!

DtM, Beesmum, SbP, Lyndyloo, Jen, Clodagh and Bingo...what exalted company! Love your work!

  • Comment number 17.

Welcome back Chris! Lord knows we've missed you (as does krishna, allah and every other deity known to man!)

It has always peeved me when someone decides to jump on a character band wagon and write "The Young ......." Sherlock Holmes, James Bond etc. etc. I know they are written to introduce the younger generation to a character - but the quality of writing leaves alot to be desired. Good luck to the "new" Ian Fleming - if Joanna Lumley's program last night is anything to go by he has a fairly big, and flash pair of shoes to fit into!

Ohh - the job interview i referred to in the last blog was for my last job. Its OK Big Boss I'm not going anywhere -calm down, have another fag!

  • Comment number 32.

Hmmm, I am also feeling c**p today. Is it a computer virus? Thought we were stonewalled or what ever it is.

It is fabulous and wonderful to have you back CLP, you have been badly missed. I have read Sebastian Faulkes but not Ian Fleming so can't comment. I can do a good impression of my mother but it doesn't really travel well.

Peeing it down outside and I have to do the big shop soon, booo.

Also, the second I started typing I got a text from my sister-in-law which has made me reeeeeaaaaaaally mad. Not that I'll tell her of course, run a mile from confrontation me , but I am sooooooooooo cross and I don't cross easily.

Just has to get that off me chest.

A good evening and Get Well Soon to all bloggers and invalids.

Now Now, please get your claws back in! No one is in the shed or on the naughty step (unless they want to be - steve's left his mags there (or are they EJR's)). Just get back to normal PLEASE!

Where is our very own James Bond? Must agree that Joanna Lumley's prog was very informative. Unfortunately had to leave half way through to top up the shopping (teenage step child in residence at the mo! Say no more;-})

Hazel - yes ineedy, loadsa ice cream. Current fave is the "car door" brand ... coffee flavour. Out of this world!

Boleyngirl - are we related? I too have a red mist descent every time I receive a text from my sister-in-law ...... and like you, I avoid the confrontation route. Hate hate hate any type of confrontation.

    I'm a lover, not a fighter .... !!

  • Comment number 36.

Honest Chezza, I am so close to sending her something really windy-uppy back, have never answered her back in 20 YEARS despite much provocation. But I love my brother so guess I won't. Ooooo, my dander is up, I tell you.

Sorry for unblog-related type outburst. Normal services now resumed - time for CLP hurrah!

  • Comment number 37.

Boleyngirl - my nemesis is Mr Diva's sister. The world must turn according to her, regardless of the rest of the family. Very annoying.

CtD, I already have, she said, looking down loftily from her throne of moral superiority.

  • Comment number 39.

I haven't seen Joanna Lumley's prog. Sound intriguing though. Hopefully we'll get it out here in the colonies soon.

  • Comment number 40.

Have there been many authors who have had people write "as" them? apart from the virginia andrews you have already spoken about?

As for Eva Cassidy -"alledegdly (?)" they are previous recordings! however the recent single Chains had some rather good backing singers - near family ties!!!!!

However I think we all agree that NO ONE could ever do an plausible impression of Christophe. He is unique!

Nearly finished so this is likely to be my last post today - big (((((HUGS))))) to the ill people - Sleeping is your body's way of repairing itself so give into it!

So good to see so many of the old names are back....

I read a whole book today!! Feel really ashamed, had so many jobs to do but once I got reading I couldn't stop - Double Fault by Lionel Shriver.

I can't do impressions but my kids are great, I'm too self-conscious I think.

  • Comment number 54.

SBP - Lord of the rings has the same effect on me. I saw the first 15 minutes then sound asleep.

Love Bond tho. Daniel Craig's OK, but can't beat the Sean Connery Bond movies. Saw the new(ish) Indianna Jones movie last week. V disappointed. What is it with old good movies now having new ones - Indianna Jones, Terminater, Rocky......

    Dragonxx

  • Comment number 55.

Bond. Sean Connery, yummy yum yum.

As for Foxy...Rosa Klebb. Hurrah Top Bird.

A marvellous time was had by all some years back at the brother-outlaw's party, him with the mouthful of Brillo pad and meself done up to the max as Rosa Klebb with the pickle forks in me shoes. Oh yes. Went with a swing, and if only some eejit hadn't put the Pogues on and started me off on the Riverdancin', nobody would have ended up in casualty with stitches in their bottom.

Hi Chris, Welcome back, we've missed yer!
Here's a question you might want to put to your listeners; Who was the only other person to play live with the Beatles at the hight of their fame when they were still touring?
(The answer is drummer Jimmy Nicholls who filled in for Ringo in their Australian tour while he recovered from Laryngitis)
If anybody says it was Billy Preston they are wrong, he played sort of live with them but that was on the rooftop of Apple HQ and it wasn't an official live date....

'Ere - do you think a lot of folks are doing that on here too... too many dopplegangers about!

On the news this morning they were talking about the gap between the rich and the poor widening. At my work we are always given a pay rise as a percentage - so, of course, the gap between the highest paid and the lowest paid widens. I'm all for a flat rate wage rise. It would mean rucks to those at the bottom and would encourage more vigorous campaigning by those at the top to make it more worthwhile to them too!

Have a good Tuesday, one and all,

    Morning *croak*

D'ya know, I've looked everywhere. Hunted high and low. In all the nooks and crannies and I just cannot find .... my voice! It was there when I went to bed last night, but come this morning, it has been replaced with some weird sound with potential for an 0898 phone-line!

Oh well, quiet night ahead for Mr Diva I guess. .....

Christmas: been thinking about it for ages, but haven't bought any prezzies yet. I have cards aplenty - need to revise my list this year as many bloggers need to be added! I'll probably try and do the majority of my crimbo shopping on-line and then get the silly stocking fillers in the West End when I go up to meet Hazel in December.

Lyndyloo - my cousin went to NY for New Year 2007/08 and had an absolute ball!!

Pay rises: Jen: the percentage thing was how pay rises were done when I worked in local government. Very nice if you're the CEO on 100K+, but not so effective for a lowly admin/typist on 12K. Sadly, they just couldn't see it. Not even when the Senior Managers had their hollibobs in Barbados and the typing pool could only dream of a caravan in Walton On The Naze!

Bingo / Clodagh - you two really crack me up! Keep on keeping on x xx

Super_Bagpuss: well done for making it in today hun. I've opted for the sofa for another day but intend to go in tomorrow (I guess voice dependent, as lots of telephone work called for during a normal day).

Steve - good luck with house hunting stuff babes!!

Right, off to check the other side. Back in a bit.

I do some good impressions of random people, including Alan Titchmarsh, Tessa Shaw (remember her?), Mark Owen and Richard Briers to name but a few...

Glad to have you back CLP.

    Hello guys

Haven't caught up on posts properly I'm afraid.

I have had a few really horrible days but don't want to talk about it here. Not the place and don't want to bring the blog down.

I just thought maybe it would help if I made an effort to join in today.

Sorry to hear that some of you are poorly, wish you better soon.

I not got flu. I got tonsilitis. Commonly known as Barbed Wire In The Throat. Not nice.

Had real flu last year for the first time in my life. Never been so ill in my life ever. Do not ever ever want real flu again as long as I live.

Hello bloggers just introducing myself and wanted to let you all know of another great book...

I just finished reading The Surgeon of Crowthorne on your recommendation, Chris. Really enjoyed it - amazing story - and especially loved the bit in the notes at the back about how the author got hold of some of the original printing plates which were being skipped - and how he got them printed and displayed...an extra dimension to the story!

If you liked that, you'll LOVE "The Vitamin Murders" by James Fergusson. Another true, amazing story (a whodunnit) interweaved with the story of the debasement of the British diet since WWII and the shocking story of how our food's become so contaminated by chemicals since then. Its a BRILLIANT book....please put it next on your must-read list!...I know how you love your food!!

PS. I'm not related to the writer or the publisher!

Just the usual Cheryl, well maybe a little worse than before actually.

Bingo mate thanks. It will all work out for you one day.

The nurse at my local surgery told me yesterday that she is retiring. She is going to be 60 and she is getting married. So life can begin at 60! She's lovely, I'm very happy for her.

Virtual hugs are great and the thought is so lovely but today, I really need a great big, proper hug. I guess I'll have to wait until I pick up LM later.

  • Comment number 93.

    Point taken Super Bagpuss.

But sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind.

Sending people the messages of sympathy often does not work when what they need to hear is pull yourself together.
Otherwise people can spiral into self pity.

Have a laugh do something crazy but talking about problems only makes them worse.

  • Comment number 94.

Prof Plum - You are mega accurate with the astro thingy (which should also apply ter Super B - another cap) but I disagree with the 'stable' one.....
Never owned or indeed riden a 'orse in me life!!!!!

  • Comment number 95.

PS Prof ere's a 'ug from me ((({{{[[[Prof]]]}}}))).... actually looks more like worry lines or wrinkles!!!!

  • Comment number 96.

bingo - i'm with you on that one - I'm allergic to horses - no stables for me

  • Comment number 97.

To be fair PP when someone is suffering from depression one of the worst things that you can say to them is 'pull yourself together'.

I don't want sympathy. Support is nice but I don't want anyone feeling sorry for me.

Now I have some really, really low times that I don't even hint at on this blog. Haven't done so for ages.

But sometimes it's just nice to reach out, be honest and let people know that you aren't feeling great.

I understand what you are trying to imply though and I appreciate that and point taken.

And I could do with a good laugh, so go for it :)

    I was not meaning you.
Just look for that Robin and something you really enjoy doing and your problems will dimish to acceptable levels.

    Life is not perfect.
