SO HERE'S THE SECRET TO THE... DO YOU WANT TO KNOW IF IT'S A BOY OR A GIRL THING
My wife and I figured it out last night...
...after being seduced by the magical spell of a new baby yesterday we were discussing whether or not we should discover the sex of our little human-to-be.
Up to now we have been convinced we are going to have a boy but still wanted to leave it as a surprise. Last night though we discussed that if we continued to go down the it's- definitely-a-boy route and it turned out to be a girl, it might not be so fair on the little lady. Not a single logical reason as to why we suspect maledom, it's just been a feeling.
We seriously considered finding out next time we visit Doctor Stirrups. Would this be a cop out though ? Were we bottling it ?
It was at this point we realised that all the couples we'd talked to who were also going to leave it as a surprise somehow seemed to find out "accidentally."
We concluded that these "accidents" were manufactured because they just couldn't wait but didn't want to admit it.
If you are reading this Dr. Stirrup and you "accidentally" see anything bobbing around or not bobbing around on the next scan and you "accidentally" mention it to us, we won't hold it, whatever "it" may be against you.

While mummy was pushing me into the world, daddy was on the old North Bank at HIghbury watching The Gunners beat West Ham in the opening game of the season (August baby, y'see). I still think, that had I been a wee baby boy, he'd have had me signed up for the Junior Gunners Academy before I could walk.
Then I was almost christened Samantha. But that's another story.

When the Genius daughter crashed into my world and changed it forever, I'd been convinced she was a boy. Being from a family of girlies, and as the rugger-bugger DDF Eric used to announce that he was fetlock-deep in women; and even the dog's a bitch... actually that doesn't seem so funny now I've put it in print; I should've given him a thick ear...anyway, there I was, certain that she was going to incarnate male. When she was finally placed in my arms after a bit of a struggle that ended in her bein' sucked out with the Dyson and a pair of salad-servers, boy did she look cross and who could blame her. For my part I was thunderstruck. I hadn't thought of myself with a daughter. But she was so utterly gorgeous and delicious (yes, yes I know, what she actually looked like was a pound of mussels), that this feeling subsided in approximately 3 seconds.
And now, 28 and a bit years later, I cannot imagine anything different.
And I'm with Sall. Baby's bottoms are ripe for biting. Yummy yum yum delicious. In fact I only bit her bottom a couple of nights ago.
Mind you that was only because we were sharin' a bed when she decided to perform her hilarious trick of trappin' me beneath the duvet and breakin' wind. So all's fair and all that.
Ok I said she was female and a Genius. I never said she was ladylike. Bless her.

Whatever you decided, CLP, do us a favour and keep it to yourself! It's one of the best bits about other people having babies -waiting to see. When my brother-in-law and his lovely wife were having there's we already knew what she was, what her name was and what time she was going to born! Where's the fun in that? She's gorgeous though, and full of surprises herself which kind of makes up for it!
I love babies. Love 'em. Catching up with a mate and her 6 month-old next week (half-term - yey hey!), can't wait. Love the hands, feet, chubby thighs, laugh, expressions etc. Not everything though, especially having to wear beige for a year to hide the sick and poo (yes, I know that's an old Victoria Wood joke but it's so true!

Ere. Maybe that's it... I wonder if Nancy Spungen ever held Sid Vicious' head under the bedclothes...?
And naturally for a girl given a name normally reserved for budgies, she had to go to the school fancy dress as a parrot, where she sorted out a badly-behaved Superman with one whack of her beak. BM, God's teeth, chicken wire reminds me of my days as a class teacher doing "Large" 3D work. Along with "modrock" (like the stuff they do fracture plasters with). Now you mention it, that might work, but hope I can find someone else to do the dirty work.

If you've got a good joke, tell it at every available opportunity.
Of course your idea of what constitutes a good joke may not be the same as anyone else's, but the more times they hear it the more they have the chance to get to love it.
Having said that my kids have threatened to have me reported to social services if I tell a couple of particular jokes once more.

Everyone kept telling us that we were "spoiling the surprise" but honestly the overwhelming emotion you feel when you know what your child will be is amazing. My hubby went into shock! Then you have loads of time to absorb it and plan! Plus, it helped me to bond as I was able to start calling my bump Sophie and prepare myself to have a daughter. And seriously - how can you "spoil" the birth by knowing what you're having!!! It has nothing to do with loving your child less which I personally feel is a terrible thing to say.
Plus - we got loads more free stuff as all our friends were able to pass on their children's pink clothes throughout our pregnancy!! Thanks guys xxx

I seem to remember a large orange sheet and a couple of the hoops you try to keep swinging above your hips where the main basis of this costume. If I remember rightly my head stuck out the top and my shoulders and the hoops (I guess they must've been sewed in some how, but I forget) formed the pumpkin shape with my legs sticking out the bottom. It worked quite well til there was some game which involved running though arches made by other people. One, I didn't fit though the arches and two, I could barely reach to form an arch past my costume! I suspect I'd need a bigger orange sheet now, but the basic idea should still work if you're still short of ideas, boleyngirl and it shouldn't be quite as messy as paper mache!

But before I go, I've been thinking.
Kyle, I fear you were right. I was a little patronising and for that I humbly apologise. It was not my intention nor ever would be; I do not rate my own intellectual capacity so highly above anyone else's that it would be necessary.
I meant what I said of course, but all I was attempting was to lighten the mood; but isn't it interesting how the dynamic of the written word is different to the face-to-face. That's why texting can be dangerous. Particularly when, like me, your friends are all such eejits. You can never be certain of the intent without the accompanying body language. I've fallen foul of our Baz on several occasions this way and once left him stranded at Dublin Airport all night because I thought he was messing. So sorry, chuck.
As regards the pumpkin, I would refer to my earlier missive re. accessibility when you want a wee. Achtung. But if you can get hold of some orange neoprene- you know, wetsuit fabric- you'll find it easier.
Mind you I'd go as a bat. What is it they say about fancy ress costumes betraying the inner self.
Righto. May lurk a bit if I have time but for now I've me rubber ring on and am doin' me hornpipe as I speak.
Take care.

Can we please have some snow, I love it!
My sis lived in VT for a good few years and they had snow Oct-Mar so she absolutely hates it but I went to visit her in 2000 and it was lovely. February, bitterly cold and snow everywhere, xmas lights still on houses as was too cold to bring 'em in but it was lovely. Didn't feel anywhere near as cold as it does here as it's dry!
Oh well, we can dream!

Many years ago my sister moved to South Carolina in the States about this time. Her first job was making trick or treat costumes for her very young children. She dressed her 4 year old boy in a ghost outfit.
For many months after she was treated very wierdly by the local 'moms' until the photos from the night came back.
Her ghost outfit was an exact replica of the klu klux klan outfits!
They all got over it eventually!

Thursday here in deepest rural Suffolk is local paper day. I LOVE our local paper - it absolutely makes The Framley Examiner** lok like the Telegraph. Anyhoo, I digress ...
Admitedly I don't look my best this week, but really, was there any need for the spotty oik round the local shop to give me his very best "Hallowe'ens not for another weeke yet love" look!?!?!?
So I've skulked home, locked the door and won't go out til I look semi-human again. Promise!
** Framley Examiner - if you've not heard of it, goog it. It's brillig! (BM - don't have tea in mouth when reading tho, screen splat guaranteed)
So, Jackie Collins. Yes ...... when all my 13 year old classmates were still reading Jackie and Blue Jeans, I'd moved on to Lovers and Gamblers, The Stud, Rock Star, Hollywood Wives ...... blissful no-brainer reading. I had a break away from her as I thought she was getting too samey, but then saw one I'd not read as part of a 3 for a tenner deal so took a chance. This one's about Lucky thingyjig too but it's actually quite enjoyable! (Drop Dead Beautiful).
All this talk of pumpkim costumes is getting me quite 'cited for Hallowe'en. May invest in some spoky H@rib0 sweets!
