Diana Vickers - 'Once'

Diana Vickers

Music is a messy place, don't you think? There aren't too many cast-iron certainties, and the ones which do seem to exist only do so by common agreement, rather than as a rule of law which can be applied to every situation.

Here's an example: suppose you hear a song by an artist you don't know, and it does something marvellous to your insides. And then afterwards you find out it's by someone you've never approved of in the past. Then you hear/read/see an interview with them and they're just as annoying as they always were. Where does that leave you with regard to that marvellous feeling? Confused? In denial? Guilty?

Similarly, there are artists whose work should be right up your street. People you love, love them. Other acts cover their songs. They come across brilliantly in the press, and are pretty hot too. It's all good. Except their music leaves you as it finds you, unchanged and a bit frustrated.

Don't be afraid, this happens to everyone.

(. That's not a real llamaskin coat.)

Now, apparently there's a bit of this sort of confusion around young Diana here, because she was the indie one on the X Factor, but she writes her own stuff, and there's guitars involved.

This is clearly button-pushing of the worst kind. How dare someone off the X Factor attempt to do things which are the sole preserve of experienced indie-rockers? How dare indie people attempt to go on the X Factor? How dare manufactured pop attempt to steal the holy guitar from the hands of real musicians? How dare reality attempt to make music in the first place? Hmm? HMM?

The thing is, all the musical reference points here are pop. She's got a touch of the Sophie Ellis Bextor's to her voice in the verses, and a Shakira sob or two in the chorus. Oh sure, there are guitars, but they're really just there to beef things up a bit, it's hardly a triumph of genre-splicing, or, for that matter proof positive that what we have here is a genuine artist whose music cannot be moulded by The Man.

But it's also not proof that she's just some reality TV pop puppet with no clue and a clever marketing team. Just a girl with a quacky voice and a sweet little pop song with a remarkably over-emo chorus.

If you like it, great, if you don't, it's not because of the politics of the situation, it's because the music didn't reach you.

I really like this song, to me it's worth four srtars, but it's undeniably easy to see why someone would hate her and this song. Her voice is a bit marmite isn't it?

  • Comment number 2.

.....but the music did reach me, as I guess it reached the reviewer too. He just can't face up to it. Throw away your X-factor blockage and accept that this is a fantastic record on its own merit, probably the best this year, and as it happens it is a triumph of genre-splicing. Just relax and enjoy it. It won't harm you.

    Diana Vickers - Once

I first heard this song months ago , and I have been litening to it intently for a while .
It was written by Cathy Dennis and E.G White , and it fits Diana's vocal phrasing perfectly .
A great intro leads into Diana'a distinctive vocal which is sure to divide people . There's a touch of the Ellie Goulding in her lilt , and one of my male friends can do a fantastic Diana singing impression , which creases up his audience . Agreed she has a "marmite " voice , but personally it charms me .
Once boasts one helluva huge chorus hook , a lilting middle eight , and a great video .
It sounds very at home at radio , and is already on many A lists . including Radio 1 .
This is a wonderful debut single , and I predicted a top 20 hit for the song , about a month ago , due to that chorus , where the strident guitars add some attitude and adds to the songs undeniable appeal.

Now , I tip it as a probable top 10 , it has wonderful commercial possibilities .

    5 stars

  • Comment number 4.

The song itself is pretty decent, but I cannot listen to Diana's voice. I don't get why some people say "Diana's voice is good because it's different." Really? In some cases that's true, but hers is just plain horrible. Fair enough some people might like it, but it'll certainly put more people off than gain fans.

Thing is, she already has a massive leg-up because of her being on X Factor a few years ago. People already know who she is and we all know that commercial radio are obsessed with anything to do with X Factor so she has a big advantage there. She's also had a lot of money thrown at her album so they weren't going to let it go unnoticed.

Let's face it - if she wasn't 'That Diana Girl Off X Factor', would anyone care about her music? I doubt it. She'll probably go to no.1 because of the hype but that's what happens.

  • Comment number 5.

In my view , It's irrespective as to who sings Once , the fact remains that it is a very good song with a standout chorus , and that is why it will chart high .
Once fits the Radio 1 playlist superbly, never mind who sings it , it's all about the appeal of the song .

If commercial radio were obsessed with X Factor , why did Laura White's debut single fail to hit the radio airplay top 30 , and fail to make the Radio 1 playlists ?

Why did Eoghan Quigg's debut single fail to get hardly any airplay on Uk radio ?

If what you say is true , then both artists should have been all over the radio , as they are former X Factor singers.
    It never happened though .

The answer is that both songs were clearly not in the same league as Once in terms of production , chorus , appeal ,and credibility .
It's nearly all about the song .

Diana's debut album Songs From The Tainted Cherry Tree is released on May 3rd .

  • Comment number 6.

Though I agree with Spirit and OddOne that it's a good song I'm pretty sure that Diana wouldn't have got a first single as strong as Once if it hadn't been for her appearance on X-Factor.

You can't blame people for sometimes being bitter about X-Factor contestants as they get an unfair amount of commercial coverage and advertising leading up their releases, the sort that other artists couldn't manage in their wildest dreams. Also when high quality pop songs like O.N.E - Yeasayer, 1901 - Phoenix and Valentine - Delays fail to make the top 20, whilst X-Factor contestants spend most of their time parading around the top 10 with much poorer songs, you can't help but feel like there's little justice in the world.

In a fair world the amount of publicity and chart positions of a single should be judged on the quality, yes I know it's all subjective but some songs are obviously better than others, instead on how many covers you sang on a tv show. Then again in that fair world Once will still be a hit. 4 STARS

  • Comment number 7.

The song is pure brilliance, and whilst Diana's voice is 'marmite' as I earlier said, I guess I forgot to mention that I love her voice. Just thought I'd clear that up.

And for the record, I do here a touch of Ellie Goulding's voice too, spirit. ;)

"Why did Eoghan Quigg's debut single fail to get hardly any airplay on Uk radio ?"

Now, come on, that WAS crap. Bad boy Eggnog.

  • Comment number 8.

You know there is no need to feel bitter .

X Factor is open to anyone to apply , just like anyone can form a band , or make music in their bedroom and send it to record companies .

How much do acts want it ?

I have never been on X Factor , but it seems you certainly need guts , hard graft , nerves of steel ,talent , charisma , soul and the likeability factor to win the thing , or even get to the final.

Fair play to Diana for applying and getting as far as she did , should people feel less of X Factor contestants because they never toiled mentally or physically through perceived hardship and pain outside of television ?

Surely if you are hungry for success in any profession , you will use all the routes and chances at your disposal , and you take them when the opportunity arises .
X Factor is viewed by up to 20 million viewers , so a clever, talented aspirational singer may rightly view this as an opportunity too good to refuse .

It didn't happen by magic that Diana did well, she put in a lot of hard work to get where she did , as did Leona as did Alexandra and JLS ETC .

I am sure when Alexandra was offered a record contract , she never said :

"No thanks , I want to struggle in pubs and clubs for a while , so I can gain some credibility . "

The most important thing is when you are in the public eye , you produce first rate songs , that give pleasure to a lot of listeners , and Bad Boys and Once certainly do this for many .

It was Diana's hard work , talent , soul and guts that got her to the final of X Factor , and thus signed by RCA Records , who could see she had appeal .
No one handed it to her on a plate , she worked hard and earnt it .

  • Comment number 9.

    Ha ha Oddone .

It is Kutox that is saying that commercial radio is obsessed with anything X Factor .

The Eoghan Quigg single blows that argument out of the water !

    :)

  • Comment number 10.

    Yeasayer - One.

    Pheonix - 1901.

    Delays - Valentine .

3 fine examples of 5 star songs .

  • Comment number 11.

I wonder how many of Quigg's 28 thousand friends would be willing to give him a record deal/career right now...

  • Comment number 12.

    ^LOL Jonesy.

Didn't he release an album of covers (plus '28,000 Friends') that only peaked at like #60 in the album charts?

    *drops*

  • Comment number 13.

I believe it was Quigg's girlfriend that had 28,000 Friends so obviously Diana was given a record deal. That'll teach him to complain about her being on MySpace all the time.

Can you remember all that speculation about the two of them going out? Diana appears so much more mature than the juvenile Eggnog Quigg.

  • Comment number 14.

No idea, i've just been away on holiday and wanted to mark my return with an intelligent quip. I can't claim to be an expert on the long and illustrious career of Eoghan Quigg...

  • Comment number 15.

Nor is Eoghan Quigg an expert on a long and illustrious career . :)

You compare 28,000 Friends to Diana's Once and tell me if you were the playlist panel , which one would you want on your A list , being played approximately 25 times a week at peak listening times ?

  • Comment number 16.

I hate to be derogatory and say stupid question but you get my meaning.

  • Comment number 17.

It's a purposely rhetorical question Jonesy , in which everyone who understands the current music scene knows the answer . :)

  • Comment number 18.

Anyway , where did you go on holiday , and why were none of your Chartblog friends invited ? :)

  • Comment number 19.

Like I said - Diana has had a LOT of money thrown at her album - just look at some of the names she's 'worked with'. They were never going to let it go unnoticed.

But like you said spirit - people like Alexandra Burke just wanted success, they wanted to be famous and be a popstar, whatever way they could. They aren't in it for the sake of the music, or to try and be creative or offer something to it - they just want to be on tv and to be no.1 in the charts. I don't see how it's a good thing that most kids seem to just want that these days.

  • Comment number 20.

I know spirit, I know. I went to Cornwall for 10 days, nothing too flashy but I like English holidays when the sun is out. Which of course it wasn't, in the most part, but oh well, I had a good break anyway. I would have invited you all, but there was no room in the car I'm afraid... ;)

As for Diana, well i'm not sure how much money was involved Kutox, i'd like to think that writers like Cathy Dennis and Ellie Goulding wrote more for a love of new music and an exciting artist than a big paycheck, but I may be mistaken. It did however have a lot of time put into it , nearly a year more than Alexandras (on the same series), which can be seen as theatre commitments but that doesn't take a year, on top of the year after the show that Alrxandra also took to make the album. She took her time with this, where Quigg released his 'thing' ( I don't know what it was, nor do I want to) very shortly after the end of the show I seem to remember. The results in comparison are for all to see.

  • Comment number 21.

Turns out he only recorded covers of the songs he did on X Factor to put on his EP.

Cannot wait for Diana's rather badly named 'Songs From The Tainted Cherry Tree' LP. Don't bite me, it's personal opinion.

  • Comment number 22.

    Rubbish*

  • Comment number 23.

    Rubbish?

  • Comment number 24.

    Rubbish?

  • Comment number 25.

Sorry should have made that clearer, Eggnog's covers were rubbish.

Unlike this Diana song. Which is amazing.

I will post at length about this soon..

  • Comment number 26.

    Hey guys,

I think this is a good song. I dont really watch X factor, but obviously cant avoid it as everyone else does watch it, so i knew who diana was. I like her voice, although i think it will limit her music style, but if she makes good tracks then thats fine.

I dont really mind that she comes from X factor, weve seen more flops from reality shows than success, so we know it is definitely not a short-cut to pop stardom. The fact she has gone away for so long to work on a good album gives her more respect. also, its about the song at the end of the day. if its a good song performed well, dont care who sang it.

expected it to get 4 stars, but 3 is good. will chart in top 5.

  • Comment number 27.

I heard her live on Blue Peter yesterday (YES I STILL WATCH IT IT'S LIKE GOD)

Anyway, she's sounding much better then her X Factor days, its annoying because it seems to producers has edited her voice to sound even more... Diana-ish, so when she sings it live she's actually smoother than the recording and she's got a much more powerful set of pipes on her now, really blasting the notes out towards the end of the song.

I think this song may just be a 5 star song now! OOER! -Likes

  • Comment number 28.

Just to let people reading Chartblog know , that some of it's regular commenters can hear appeal in songs , very early .

Have a read on Alexander Rybak numbers :

    1147
    1149
    1150
    1371
    1378

    There you go .
And now it looks like Once by Diana Vickers is heading for the top 3 and is a possible number 1 contender .
Glad to hear , so many people , can think out of their personal zone , and can feel just what hundreds of thousands of other people, who love music , are gonna like .

    Bravo Chartblog !

  • Comment number 29.

Also , we are still waiting for the glorious and fantastic Blogging Liam to post at length about this track , as he promised ages ago .

At this rate , Diana will be number 1 , before one of our most glamourous music experts ,who predicted huge success for Diana ,months ago , shares his thoughts .

    Come on Liam !

  • Comment number 30.

i liked this when i heard then.. then i heard it was by her and was worried.. but i guess its gotta be about the music

  • Comment number 31.

I used to think this was a 5 star song but, much like Bleeding Love, once the novelty of 'look it's an X-Factor song that isn't rubbish' wears off it loses some of it's appeal.
    4 Stars for me.

  • Comment number 32.

Oh ahah I'd forgotten I owe this little gem a post.

    Hmm Diana Vickers. Frilly knickers.

Sorry, couldn't resist. Damn Chris Moyles. Apparently the Diana Vicker's underwear range is actually on its way, but I think she may have actually been joking.

Im gonna go into several posts incase I swear or something that will get deleted. Also several topics..

I've always felt a little sorry for pop stars that are found through shows such as X Factor. Alexandra Burke was on Radio1 today doing some guff with Tim Westwood about local heroes. Basically, career not doing so well. They played her new song after her bit, reminding me why her career isn't doing so well.

I actually don't really feel sorry for such pop stars, when I think about it properly.. because without shows such as X Factor they would still be scrubbing toilets or whatever. Raw talent is of course found, however the 12 weeks of media, vocal and stage coaching that they got through is actually invaluble. Even Leona with her power-house of a voice couldn't have walked into Sony and got a record deal before The X Factor. They have been given a massive break by the show and should (and probably are) very greatful for every bit of success they get.

So I guess it could be argued it's hard on those who are then channeled into a set career as a result, such as Alexandra. Clearly King Cowell looked at her, along with little dollar signs, saw an RnB dance cross over artist and threw stuff like 'Broken Heels' at her. Having signed a record deal she didn't really have much creative control. A good thing? Perhaps. Maybe she knows jack all.

As a result I see the next Shane Warn in Alexandra. I actually think he is/was a HUGE talent. Go listen to some of his X Factor performances on youtube.. amazing stuff. He had a couple of good singles (as people would argue of Alexandra).. but never hit the heights of Leona. I do wonder if without her, we would have had this many series. She has proven the mould.. but part from her the other winers have actually had limited sucess.

  • Comment number 33.

So when an artist such as Diana Vickers comes along, it's really refreshing. I could be being a bit caught up in a bit of a clever PR stunt/scam.. but I think she breaks the mould a bit. I'm not trying to say she is edgy or indie.. or any of the other ridiculous things that I've heard people say she is trying to be. Because she is clearly not trying to be any of these things. She is trying to be an out and out pop star. She also appears to be doing this well.

I loved her on X Factor.. at the beginning anyway. Initially she sang some amazing stuff. Her version of 'With or Without you' was amazing, along with 'Man in the Mirror' off the live shows and her 'hallelujah" was the reason it was picked as the winners single. 'Call me' was also great.. I can remember all these off the top of my head. A mark of what a good performer she was. I can't do that for many others from X Factor, which I watch a little too religiously.

The stuff she sang set her apart from the other contestants, not only in the sense that they weren't our and our power ballards or dance numbers.. but in the genre of what she sang. They were more band type songs.. a little like Stacy Soloman did this series. She pulled out Keane and Colplay and quickly became my favourite in the competition.

However, much like Diana, she was quickly moved away from those songs and given the more pop, ballard and stage numbers. More typical of X Factor. Stacey came third and did well as a result, but Diana suffered more. Her version of 'Patience' was shocking. She well deserved to go when she did.

  • Comment number 34.

It is nice to see Diana back with an album penned by peoeple who fit quite well into the very vauge and awfully described rough category described alove. She has callaborated with a host of indie song writers and stars (the Gary Lightbody song didn't actually feature on the album in the end!). Im a big Lightspeed Champion fan, so I'm looking forward to that song in particular.

This, combined with the fact she had an award winning stint on the West End, gives Diana a credibility unheard of among X Factor alumni. Nobody else from X Factor has had such a potentially diferent, and interesting start, from my perspective. Sure some since have gained actual credibility (actually only really Will Young and maybe Leona in my eyes..)

Also although she is most definitely releasing poppy songs (not saying pop isn't credible), she had a whole level of "oh actually maybe she is a serious artist" about her.

This makes me happy! I have a big fat told you so for the people who I watched X Factor with almost 2 years ago that doubted her!

Although, I hope it's not a big media scam and actually Simon Cowell is pulling ths strings, she has no writing credits on the album, the song bombs at #10 and she sounds awful in the Live Lounge this week.

  • Comment number 35.

This song? Great. I've written too much of an essay already to really delve into this song. But it's great fun, catchy and well constructed.

I was a bit worried that her voice had been autotuned to hell and back on listening to it first. But 'tube some live performances.. they are great. her voice has clearly matured and sorted itself out a bit. Works really well live. Obviously she isn't going to fill an arena and belt out 'Once once once'.. but its lovely to heard it.

I whether you like Diana or not does come down to the voice. I of course love it. A lot of people don't!

Annoyingly. Fraser's review didn't really seem to give much of an opinion on the song.

Currently riding high in the iTunes and Amazon charts. I was a little flippant in my #1 prediction a while back, but Im gonna go out on a limb and say it will hit #1. If not at least top 3. I'm rarely right though, that was probably a jynx.

Looking forward to her live lounge anyway! Hope she doesn't pick an obvious (i.e Ellie Goulding or Owl City..) cover.

  • Comment number 36.

    Happy Spirit?!?!?

  • Comment number 37.

    Oh , blissfully happy darling ! :)

You were obviously not joking , when you said you were gonna post at length !!!

Jeez Louise ! I have grown a five o'clock shadow whilst reading it. :)

Wow , it was like watching all three, Lord Of The Rings films back to back . lol

You must be commended , that was like a thousand words , without swearing .
    Well done !

  • Comment number 38.

On a serious note , though , who is this Shane Warn character , you mentioned , who won X FACTOR ?

Wasn't Shane Warne a phenomally successful Australian spin bowler who broke the record for taking the most test wickets ?

You had me spitting my lager through my nose , when I read that. lol.
    Priceless.

    "G'DAY Mate ! "

I think you mean Shane WARD , the handsome singer from the North West , who had the number 1 with That's My Goal .

  • Comment number 39.

Oh I remember writing that and thinking "hmm check his name". I also don't use a physical spell checker.. it shows!

  • Comment number 40.

On an even more serious note , you of course know Diana's X FACTOR history well , and deserve commendation for hearing the appeal , individuality and character in Diana'a voice , at a very early stage.

Like you ,(and RCA Records ) , I could hear the magic that this beautiful young singer possessed , and her version of "With Or Without You " , was a deciding factor in the emergence of a record deal .
Her personality and willingness to learn , and her unconventional beauty , also proved alluring .

The single most , obvious reason why Once will be an outstanding commercial hit , is obviously the fantastic chorus , and the wonderful vocal delivery , which has the right mix of vulnerability and determination.

    A wonderful , contrasting combination .

It simply is , as I and you , have said for months , a fantastic pop single , that has fantastic commercial potential .

I agree that Fraser's review , annoyingly ,doesn't really focus on the magic of a wonderful, well structured , emotive pop song , or the fact that he was listening to a massive commercial hit in waiting , that is going to appeal to hundreds of thousands of people , all around the country.

Everyone's perception is slightly different , so we won't shed any tears , if our beloved Fraser , puts his 3 stars for Diana , under a tainted cherry tree , covers them with Leona's Bleeding Love and tramples on them with Alexandra's Broken Heels !

We both know Once is a five star pop song .

    Watch it soar .

  • Comment number 41.

Once will probably need to depose Usher , and hold off Jamal Fyffe , AKA Chipmunk to get to the coveted NUMBER ONE spot , but it's a fight , I firmly believe she is has the best chance of winning .

Come on Vickers , V is for VICTORY !

In the album chart , expect top 10 new entries from Meatloaf , AC/DC , Kate Nash and the fantastic Paul Weller.

Wake Up The Nation is my hope and tip to be number 1 , as it's a glorious 5 star album , with the Modfather on top form . Hey , even former Jam member , Bruce Foxton plays bass on a couple of tracks .
So magical to see them back together after so long , not talking.
It's a fantastic album , and my tip for the top spot .

In other news , there is an Internet campaign to get The Jam's Eton Rifles into the top ten for Election Day on May 6th .
It's a 5 star song , and worthy of the passion involved to get it there .

So , I am in the CHARTBLOG BAR and ordering a number 1 double for Vickers and Weller , please !

  • Comment number 42.

She also did a great 40 second version of James Blunt's Carry You 91Èȱ¬, about 45 seconds, probably somewhere on YouTube. I'm sure I said I was a fan over on Rybak a whole back, but just to confirm, I am.

As for Weller, anything he can do to get young people to listen to him and/or The Jam is great. You Do Something To Me still gives me goosebumps...

  • Comment number 43.

What a lovely cover in the Live Lounge today. Nothing spectacular... but very nice. Her 'Once' performance was good. Proving she is a real talent live too. I'm glad!

  • Comment number 44.

    What did she do Liam?

  • Comment number 45.

'Yes' or 'Just say yes', whatever the exact title is, by Snow Patrol.

  • Comment number 46.

Ah yes, heard she was doing that on tour recently. I shall have a look on the old Live Lounge site. Turn up for the books if she goes straight in at number 1 eh?!

  • Comment number 47.

Looks like Spirit will be celebrating tonight, Once is no.1!

  • Comment number 48.

    Cheers Harry .

I could tell this was a biggie on first play about 3 - 4 months ago , and once Radio 1 playlisted it , it was a certain huge hit .

Sad Weller didn't make it , but he was beaten by the soundtrack to the forthcoming Iron Man 2 film ,by AC/DC , and that has seen fierce and telling promotion in the last week .

  • Comment number 49.

    Excellent.

  • Comment number 50.

I see it as a five star song, which should keep spirit off my back ;)

But I doubt it will make #1, it will however chart VERY high, you can just tell, what with that big old chorus 'n'all.

  • Comment number 51.

And on the subject of five star singles spirit, what's the latest on Florence's 'Cosmic Love'?

  • Comment number 52.

EDIT: Never mind spirit, Digitalspy.com told me all a need to know :) 'Cosmic Love' is to be released as the 'sixth' single from 'Lungs' on July 5. WOOO!

And I would like to take the chance to withdraw my previous statement about 'Once'. It's already #1.

  • Comment number 53.

July 5!!! On my 19th birthday, what a great birthday present! I hope Florence makes a great video for the song in the vein of the new Dog Days Are Over clip.

  • Comment number 54.

@38 Spirit, I think you mean Shayne Ward, not Shane... smirk, smirk.

And @53 Random, are you only 18??? My gosh. That´s all I can say. Who writes your weekly reviews then? ;)

  • Comment number 55.

I am a literary genius, Mangsy. The best thing to come along since Oscar Wilde. ;)

  • Comment number 56.

Well , I heard a rumour that Curtain Jerker's Mum , gets the ferry across from Scotland to Ireland on a Thursday night , to help you with your weekly reviews !

I knew you couldn't do it all by yourself .

    :)

  • Comment number 57.

Hey! Those are just rumours you heard about me and Curtain Jerker's Mum working together on my debut Singles Reviews Diary and then me becoming an international star and sex symbol who takes all the credit for the Singles Reviews Diary and not paying Curtain Jerker's Mum royalties.

  • Comment number 58.

Are you sure your the sex symbol out of the two of you?

  • Comment number 59.

Haha, Curtain Jerker's Mum likes to stay behind the scenes. We're basically La Roux 2.0.

  • Comment number 60.

    Or Randy and The Machine

  • Comment number 61.

Randy + The Machine...I like that! Or even better...Randy + The Mum. My next single will be Curtain Jerker Love and it will be released on July 5. I'm hoping for a Number 1 on my birthday.

  • Comment number 62.

Is it just me or does Curtain Jerker Love sound really wierd and creepy?

  • Comment number 63.

Your mum doesn't seem to mind it.

Jonesy's right though, mine's a machine. It runs in the family.

  • Comment number 64.

Your mum doesn't seem to mind it.

To be honest I have no comeback to that.

  • Comment number 65.

    LOL

I like this song, but I liked laura white's song even more. It should have done better, and would have if it had got some airtime :/
BUT more to the point how come Train's song 'Hey, Soul Sister' is not on Radio 1s playlist or reviewed in this blog? It is great, and has done well in America and here in Ireland.

(Oh and I finally made an account after, what maybe a year of reading. Finally I can chat with the regulars!)

Welcome to the world of commenting :p

No idea on the Train track. I assume it's the same Tran that did the amaazing 'Drops of Jupiter'?

Knoxx, another Irish person. Just great!

Yeah I absolutely love Train's Hey Soul Sister. Such a catchy, heartwarming record. It has so far peaked at #2 in Ireland before it's official release but scarily enough has only reached #51 in the UK. Shocking stuff and angry glare at Radio 1 for not playlist. Fraser, you better review it.

Yep, Liam. It's the same Train. Check the song out, it's fantastic.

I'm glad you agree RandomEnigma! :D
I've been listening to it for months thanks to Cool fm, the belfast radio station!

Radio 2 have had Hey, Soul Sister on their Playlist for a while, unfortunately it seems to be fact now that songs playlisted by Radio 2 never make the charts.

    P.S: Cool FM = lol

  • Comment number 71.

Haha never heard of Cool FM. I must also LOL!

  • Comment number 72.

Haha! Cool fm is surprisingly good! :) If you get over the 'norn irish' accents which sound so strong over radio! Try it random, it's better than 2fm! (You ae irish right?)

And Radio 2 doesn't reach as big an audience as radio 1, in fact I have never listened to it! Radio one needs to playlist it too!

Uh-huh. I am Irish, I'm from the fair auld county of Leitrim which Knoxx will know has a reputation for its sprawling city and wild nightlife. Can we get Radio 1 and 2 in Ireland? I was unaware. I never really listen to radio...too much talking and ad breaks. I prefer my iPod.

Welcome Knoxx, woop for the Irish, táimid ag éirí níos láidre!!!!
I listen to i102-104 when I can, much better than 2fm (especially with the sad passing of the brilliant Gerry Ryan). Train's Hey Soul Sister is such a feelgood song, love it! Everywhere else in the world seems to have embraced this song except the UK, what're you guys at over there. Come to think of it, now would be the perfect time for the song to become a hit in the UK as it's a perfect Summer song!

I feel like a Guinness to commemorate the arrival of a new irish chartblogger...

I think Train are actually starting to do really well in the UK so yayyy! i102-104, that's the radio station in my neck of the woods. Where about are you from Kingshleppy.

All this talk of (Northern) Irishness is making me want a biggidy-biggidy-bong in a Jim McDonald stylee.

(From the Mark and Lard show, for you youngsters.)

Congrats Train on having another fantastic chart reign all over the world with another fantastic song. Drops of Jupiter was great, but Hey Soul Sister is the most feelgood song I think I've ever heard!!

Random, I'm from a little old place called Belmullet, a B-E-A-Utiful scenic region in Mayo, yourself?? I'm guessing it's not very far away seeing as you get i102-104, Galway maybe?

On another note, had a quick listen to Ms. Vickers' new album (samples) and I think it's qiute brilliant for a debut! all hail Diana!!!!

Also, Alexandra Burke has managed to release the first song I actually like from her album. All night long, reminds me of The Lion King somehow when the "All night, all night, all night" bit starts!!

Kingshleppy I'm from the renowned county of Leitrim which is praised by every person in Ireland for its city views and fantastic nightlife.

I really like All Night Long too but I hate the Pitbull remix that's being used for the single release.

With Diana , now having had a Number 1 double in the singles and album chart , I feel Liam and myself are allowed a celebratory drink in the " We Told You So " Tavern .

Get the beers in my Blogging friend .

Random, we get radio 1 and 2 up here in the lakelands of fermanagh! And we get i102-104 as well, but as I'm studying in belfast and I only discovered it recently I haven't listened to it much. So it's good? :D
I don't listen to much radio, I just use spotify while I revise.

  • Comment number 83.

Knoxx, yeah I tried to get Radio 1 and 2 here but couldn't find them at all. Maybe because Fermanagh is technically part of the UK, ye can get it up there.

i102-104 plays lots of good music but I personally find that the presenters on the show spend far too much time talking and trying to be funny when they're not really funny at all. The shows that focus purely on music are good, the ones which have presenters talking rubbish for 2 hours while playing something like 6 songs annoy the Hell out of me. It's hugely popular with young people though so I must be one of the few who isn't completely happy with it.

Besides radio frustrates me as there is far too much emphasis on talking about things that have nothing to do with music and not enough emphasis on playing music. I use iTunes, music channels and the Internet for my music fix.
