Basement Jaxx ft. Sam Sparro - 'Feelings Gone'

Sam Sparro

Does anyone feel like doing a good deed? Anyone got something bad on their conscience that they want to balance out with a few selfless acts? Well, if you have, don't tell us what it is, we're not a confessional, but there is a way you can lift the heavy weight on your soul by doing something which will not only enrich your life, but help others into the bargain.

It's time to bring in a couple of still-mighty pop acts from the cold, and show them some love. Not because they're suddenly massively nowadays, not because [tastemaker x] says so, but because it's The Right Thing To Do.

(. It's a space oddity.)

It's no secret that Basement Jaxx and Sam Sparro are not the super-hot chart properties they once were. They're still going great guns in other arenas - literally - but not so much in the singles chart, and that's a shame.

This isn't nostalgia talking, either. I know everyone over a certain age (and below another certain aga) is honour-bound to automatically love Basement Jaxx. It's got something to do with that era when dance music still seemed a big dangerous, a bit anti-establishment, a bit "yer mum won't like it". The Jaxx were one of the kings of that age, alongside the Chemical Brothers, the Prodigy, Fatboy Slim, Underworld, Orbital (wombling free...).

For the record, I always quite liked them. Great live band, perfect festival headliners, some amazing tunes...but some dreary ones. This, however, is not a dreary tune. And it's done wonders for Sam Sparro, whose one hit to date was always just a smidge too snoozy to show off that honeyed rasp to its full potential.

Now he sounds like a sampled diva from the early '90s, giving it maximum wail and croon over the classic Jaxx mix(x) of disco and house. It's a beefed-up, danced-up torch song of a thing, and the collaboration has clearly done both acts the world of good.

So, speaking of good...how about a nice high chart position? C'mon, you'll feel all the better for it...

I heard this a month or so ago (Im sure Spirit can probably quote my exact post number about it) and loved in instantly. Its not as good as Raindrops ... but will hopefully perform better in the charts. Number 21/22 .. I mean seriously? Raindrops was a fantastic track and deserved much more recognition. I think their PR needs sorting out!

Well my first post about this song was 457 ON Rybak , back in early August .

It was Liam , who brought the glorious Raindrops to my attention .

Raindrops was A listed AT RADIO 1 , but the problem was the video was not suitable for primetime viewing . Hence , the reason , the song never made the top 20 , was the lack of T.V airplay and exposure . It was too naughty !!!

That was the difference between a NUMBER 21 , and a top 20 hit !

    Brilliant song though .

  • Comment number 3.

yea tru dat about the raindrops vid... BUT NNNNNOOOOOOO!!!!! they needed to release 'she's no good'.. my fav track off the album so far...althou 'twerk' is damn good too

  • Comment number 4.

Right time to predict this song .

Sam's voice sounds amazing on this track , and does a great Prince impression .

Not too many big hooks though , and the chorus hook is not as big as the Raindrops one .

However , it does feature Sam Sparro , so that does make it more difficult to tell .

Ok , like you , I am saying TOP 30 hit , and if it enters the twenty , it would be in the high teens . Interesting !

off basement jaxx topic but Editors new track. i am sure spirit heard it 8 years ago but its called 'papillon' and they are no longer 'gloom-indie'.. they hav taken a fancy to la roux and thrown in more synths than u can shake a big stick out of. check it.

  • Comment number 6.

Not heard it yet, guess White Lies outclassed them so they moved off gloom xD

  • Comment number 7.

Liam , you better get those claws clipped ! lol

  • Comment number 8.

    Me ow !

  • Comment number 9.

Hello Flat knees , I mentioned the new EDITORS single PAPILLON on Alexander Rybak , posts 524 and 533 , back in August ! Gotcha ! lol !

    I think it' s a grower , and now I really like it .

What next , Interpol are scared of THE WHITE LIES glory train , and will come back with an avant garde camp disco album , which on every track features a Tibetan nose flute player ?

    Heaven help us !!! lol

  • Comment number 10.

lolacoaster spirit.. for even thinking white lies come close to interpol is a cause for great, great mirth.. what have white lies got that compares to 'evil', 'slow hands', 'rest my chemisty', 'UYC' or 'Heinrich maneuver'... 'death'? not bad but COMON. i wonder if interpol have heard of white lies..

interpol frontman has released a solo album.. 'julian plenti is skyscraper'.. good stuff

I am lovin you more and more each day Flatknees !!

Only if you run is my favourite track on the Julian Plenti album !!

Please don't start me on the brilliance of INTERPOL , I could literally (no bears around ! ) go on about the greatness of this superb band for days .

Paul Banks is very aware of White Lies . To Lose my Life is a very good debut album with many special moments on it . They will get better as well . Death , A Place to Hide , Unfinished Business AND the title track really stand out for me .

Interestingly I spent an hour , the day THE BACK ROOM came out talking to Tom Smith about the majesty of Interpol .

    Take you on a cruise
    Obstacle 1
    Say Hello to the Angels
    Narc
    Slow Hands
    C'mere
    Evil
    Pace is the Trick
    All Fired up
    Heinrich Maneuver

This would be my current top ten . A great band , and one extremely close to my heart and soul !

  • Comment number 12.

spirit we may need to get married.. those tracks of interpol's in ur top 10 would pretty much make up mine.. with the inclusion of 'rest my chemistry'... and i actually think its a bit scary how u pointed out 'only if you run' from julian plenti.. fav track on that album.

and yea ur right about white lies debut, its good.. big fan of 'lose my life' and 'E.S.T'..

listen to any of The Shins spirit?

  • Comment number 13.

Back to the matter of Sam Sparro , and taking on the well paid role of the lovely Liam's water carrier ,he mentions Sam Sparro on 535 on Rybak .

As I said a while ago , Sam is reported to be writing songs for Lindsay Lohan's debut album .

    Interesting .

  • Comment number 14.

Flatknees , this is my first marriage proposal on these pages , I always imagined the popping of the question would always be in Paris , must be my huge romantic side .

Can we meet on top of the Eiffel Tower sometime ?

    lol

  • Comment number 15.

I hope Sam keeps the best songs for himself. Does anybody know if he's releasing any new material anytime soon?

  • Comment number 16.

It's very good and I like it, the trouble is it feels quite dated as if it belong in the period of the early 2000's of Bob Sinclar and Modjo.

It probaby won't be a big hit right now as everything seems to be heading back down the guitar based route at the moment (even more poppy and dancey artists like Lady Gaga and Pixie Lott have a more classical guitar coud) and away from pure synths.

Still it is a nice track that will get plenty of radio airplay but will miss out to something more meorable in the sales.

  • Comment number 17.

Sort of answered the question myself, I see you can pre-order his new album from a certain on-line company but no date or other details.

  • Comment number 18.

Well here's some more Sam Sparro news that may cheer you up !

Black and Gold is on the official soundtrack to the new FAME movie !

    Out soon !

  • Comment number 19.

2 interesting things of note :

    1) Flatknees , it is not lost on me , our Interpol a Plenti love-in .
And also I remember the Frankmusik love-in and uncanny agreement on Confusion Girl . What does this mean ?

    2) On a more sombre note , it is only a matter of time before Liam finally sees your White Lies comment at 10 , and then things should get a little more interesting on here ! lol

    3) Liam , have you finally heard Interpol yet . If not , start with Slow Hands . Give it a few listens . They are not an immediate band like maybe Editors and White Lies are , but trust me the wait is worth it , and the depth and substance in the songs is extremely moving to a lot of fans . If you don't feel it , fair enough , that's music , and we are all different . We like what we like , and it's up to us . Do give em a go though .

  • Comment number 20.

Just realised my numeracy skills are a bit out , and something just doesn't add up . lol

3 things of interest , of course .

    Ha ha .

  • Comment number 21.

Well there wont be any fur flying because I havent listened to Interpol properly... so cant really fly off at comment 10 :p

Will when I can put Muse down sorry.

  • Comment number 22.

Although I am currently listening to The Strokes.

  • Comment number 23.

smooth... i would have said start with 'evil'.. the first time i heard of them and it was the video for it on mtv... without doubt one of the most disturbing video's i have ever seen..
