Deadmau5 & Kaskade - 'I Remember'

Post categories:

Fraser McAlpine | 12:11 UK time, Sunday, 10 May 2009

Deadmau5As tempting as it sometimes is to dismiss trancey dance-type music as a shortcut to mindless euphoria, a state of dancefloor-only total excitement, which is scientifically designed to be reached via the simplest of possible means - hi Basshunter! - there's a growing body of musical evidence which proves that other emotions can be found within its glassy crevices.

Take exhibit A here. A straight-from-the-bottom-of-the-freezer shard of spooky mournfulness which would only be suitable to play as a triumphant party tune if it was Casper the Friendly Ghost's birthday and he'd invited the unfriendly ghosts along in an effort to be, y'know...friendly.

And to give the whole thing even more clout, there's a video (available on ), which, with the help of an amazingly charismatic performance from Stephen Graham, transforms a wafty chillout into a kind of rave call to arms.

It's as if this melancholy, smoky puffball is actually a requiem for lost youth culture, which you'll have to admit, is approximately 10 bazillion miles away from those bendy-over girls in the Eric Prydz videos, and closer in spirit to something like 'Ghost Town' by the Specials.

The good news is it even works without Stephen's terrifying stare egging you on. In fact, if you had a playlist of this, followed by 'Unite' by Burial, something off the last Portishead album and 'Teardrop' by Massive Attack (but NOT any of the acoustic cover versions, which are too nice by half), you'd might end up disappearing into a parallel world, where up is down, the undead roam the streets and Eoghan Quigg is quite good.

Terrifying thought, mm?

I know you've clearly got ghosts on the brain, as seen with the whole Casper analogy, but I'm not getting your comparison with The Specials. This just sounds like another crap ravey tune, while Ghost Town is one of the best songs ever written, a mon avis.

Very good song... climbing the charts.. shame the review veers and swerves again.. and we get a crafty dissing of Basshunter.... a shout for the Specials...... and a even sneaky mention for Casper....

This, my lovelies, is what happens when you are vague with language. An error for which I would be eternally sorry, if it, y'know...mattered.

    SO, for the record:

1: 'Ghost Town' > 'I Remember', but the video to 'I Remember' puts this song closer to 'Ghost Town' than to anything featuring ladies in their pants. ClosER, that is, not CLOSE.

2: Good point, Hackers. I got halfway through the sentence about "scientifically designed to be reached via the simplest of possible means" and Basshunter popped into my head. No idea why. :-)

Are you actually admitting that you are vague with language ?

    Well it's a start........ my lovely ! :D

Will they be releasing this onto cd single & not just 12" & download? I like to have a physical copy of all my music and will be a shame to miss out on this one. Dont want to buy the album for just 1 song!

Saw this guy on Saturday and he was absolutely insane. Put on an amazing show. His stage set up and light show rivaled that of Muse. It was probably better, to be honest. He's a real treat to see live, for anybody.

Deadmau5 is amazing! But when I saw this in the topical posts section, I thought this was being re-released. Good thing, I'm tired of spouting off about pointless re-releases.
