Lady GaGa ft. Colby O'Donis - 'Just Dance'
If I can offer you one piece of advice when it comes to the listening and enjoyment of music in all it's many forms, it's this. NEVER do your research. If you went off and read the bare facts about how Lady GaGa came to be singing this song, and who for, and how it came to be the way it is before listening to it, it would almost certainly destroy it.
This is because, on paper, it's just another one of those Akon-affiliated mid-tempo dance-hop tunes which rely on his heavily-reverbed squeal and lyrics about going crackers in a night-club situation. He does about 23 of them before breakfast every DAY, after all.

As it turns out, this is just about the most RIGHT NOW-ish song it's possible to imagine, and therefore immune from criticism (at the moment). It's like someone has gene-spliced every sort of popular song in America over the past 12 months, and cloned a new strain from the common DNA. And this is something that American audiences clearly enjoy, as she spent much of last year watching download sales fly up through the roof.
Naturally it helps that everything which Akon has a hand in tends to sound quite similar, but still. Everything from the monolithic synth to the Katy Perry-meets-Rihanna cold purr with which Lady GaGa sings sounds incredibly recent, as if she's the one-woman embodiment of The Sound Of 2008.
That's not the same as sounding fresh, of course. Fresh would be The Sound Of 2009, but seeing as the Brit Awards people have already decided that this honour falls to Florence & The Machine, and Lady GaGa could not sound less like FloMash if she was the lead singer of Slayer, it's best not to worry too much about predictions.
So, as the first big hit of the new year, and a musical send-off to the old one, this is kind of perfect, even if it is just another Akon-type song.
Plus, putting a lightning strike across the face in make-up is ALWAYS a good idea. Take note, James Blunt!
