Kings Of Leon - 'Use Somebody'
Media Studies undergraduates! Students of popular culture! I might have an idea for a killer thesis, if you're willing to do a bit of research (and don't mind opening a Bible, I know some of you are touchy on that subject). It goes a little something like this...
You're familiar with the Biblical story of , the Jewish Superman whose personal kryptonite happened to be having his hair cut, yes? Well, there's a parallel with the Kings of Leon, in that one or more of them seems to lose a chunk of hair every time they put a record out.
Check these photos, if you don't believe me. Here's the band around the time of their first album...
And their second...
And their third...
And nowadays they look like this.
The question is, does the loss of a beard here or a straggly mop there diminish their powers, or are they sacrificing hair for talent, in some kind of terrifying pagan ritual?
I don't wish to prejudice your findings, learned colleagues, but I'm going to have to plump for the terrifying ritual option. Especially as this lean, muscular stab at the big stadium rock sound is everything 'Sex On Fire' was, with extra ghosty harmonies and words which you can understand, even on the first listen.
Lord alone knows what will happen by their eighth album, when they look like Right Said Fred, but I bet it's going to sound AMAZING...
