nikki_belle_100.jpgIn the process of reviewing this song, I'm going to invite you to have a think about howÌýit may have been put together. There's clearly a different manufacturing procedure in the creation of a song like this than there is in other forms of musical endeavour, and it might be useful for all of you budding songwriters to have a think about it yourselves. Then we can compare notes on the other side of this video here...

OK, what have you got? "They wrote it with a pencil"? "They dun it too quick and bumpy"? "They modulated their original theme using elements of recitative and developed it using arpeggiated melodic themes"?

No, me neither. What I've got is that it sounds like they did the backing track first - breakdowns and all - and then got Nikki to sing a few ideas over the top. Possibly the first things that came into her head, possibly not.

Then all Cahill needed to do was edit out the bad bits, string the good bits together into a patchwork quilt of melody, maybe double up the vocals here and there, and that's the job done. It's like they're working from a vocal from a different song, and have cut and pasted it onto their backing track. What they lose in 'proper storytelling in song form', they gain in vocal excitement.

The result? A song which aims to hit the euphoria glands first, then the bum, then the boogie-kidneys, then all the dancing muscles, and the brain last. What's not to like?

The song is dancey and cheerful, yep. It's okay. But what we all want to know is why the first part of the review is in a smaller font than usual... It's like an eye test in reverse!

    btw
An eye test in reverse would certainly not work in a driving test environment

"It's a fly, I can see that. His name is on his sweatshirt, it's Bill, he's got a slightly bigger bluebottle next to him... he's getting bigger now, bigger, oh I see now, they're on the windscreen of that juggerna......"

    "that what?"

"that juggernaut, sorry. I have hiccups."

Text is all fixed now. I am learning about this new software all the time!

I wouldn't worry about it. I drove the wrong way round a roundabout on my first test.
