Electrovamp - 'I Don't Like The Vibe In The VIP'
It's an important part of pop music's job to occasionally be so cutely sexy that it makes self-conscious boys blush, and secretly wish they could admit to having embarrasssingly tingly feelings whenever they hear it, all the while realising that even acting like such a thing could be possible is a one-way ticket to humiliation among his peers and social death forever and ever. It's also an important part of pop music's job that it forges a sense of wild abandon and communal party power among all the dancing girls. One of whom is bound to be the chief secret crush of the squirming boy in the corner, who can't help but stare, and whine quietly to himself.
In previous years, this role has been ably filled by the likes of Vanessa Paradis, Betty Boo, Britney Spears - The 'Virgin' Years, Rachel Stevens and, to a certain extent, Girls Aloud and CSS (all of whom can claim some influence over this song, to varying degrees). But NOT Holly Valance, Geri Halliwell, the Cheeky Girls or Britney Spears - The 'Sexy' Years. They're a bit too leathery and experienced to really cut it as flirty madams.
Enter Electrovamp, a pair of sexy-brash Cardiff teens who have deliberately filled their song with many silly things, delivered with buckets of youthful sass and energy. For example, whenever the girls aren't actually singing, one or both of them squeals like a disco bunny - you know, those "Ooh! Ooh!" dancefloor chants that are bound to bust someone's eardrum one of these days.
Or there's the second verse, which is total filth, but delivered in this sleepy, tumbledown, drunk-sounding haze which renders it more cute than obscene. Plus it rhymes "naughty" with "caughty", so it's more of a leery giggle than a full on gropesnog.
In fact that's a theme for the whole song, no matter how rude the girls try to be, the glee with which they deliver their lines, and the silliness of the lines themselves, takes a lot of the seediness out, leaving a really innocent kind of sexy going on.
So innocent, in fact, that the 'adult' version of the video - which contains a couple of "shockingly" "debauched" scenes, if you work for the tabloid press - seems a bit grotty, compared to the fun and excitement of its cleaner sibling.
Don't let blush-boy see it though, or he'll combust...
