Britney SpearsWARNING! CONTAINS OVER-EXCITED MILD SWEARING
Lesser blogs than this one are full of entries telling Britney Spears what she should be doing with her life. That's their prerogative, of course, but it's of no interest to us, since it's generally a bunch of people advising a person they've never met on a situation they don't really know anything about. And also because inevitably they're more interested in the latest photo of her at Starbucks than the latest leaked demos from her new album. But I think I've stumbled on exactly what Britney actually should be doing, from a musical perspective at least, and it can be summed up in three words: "It's Britney, bitch."

WHAM! I can't think of a single song that has ever taken less than one second to win me round; as statistics go, that's pretty impressive. But more impressive is if we take that as a statement of intent, of things to come. First of all, Britney is BACK, and second of all, she's taking no crap from no one. As musical manifestos go, we're really not going to argue.

Of course, as brilliant as the first second of this song is, it does have another 4:03 (at least on the version I've got) to fill, and you can't just expect a brilliant beginning to carry you through a mediocre song. And while I'd go on record as saying this isn't quite the ball-busting, ass-kicking, take-no-prisoners comeback I was hoping for, it's still on the right road. It's got an attitude about it that shows she means business, and in quite a surprise to me, it's pretty sexy.

Britney's record with self-consciously sexy songs is a tad hit-and-miss: 'In The Zone' gave us the brilliant 'Breathe On Me', but also the frankly embarrassing 'Touch of My Hand'. Generally songs that sound like a sexual call-to-arms are her forte, because she's got a naturally low and husky voice which is made for that sort of thing. It's an admirable move for her, I think - especially when I imagine a lot of people would've suggested she go for something more girl-next-door to try to win back her old fans.

In fact, in general this song plays to Britney's strengths, requiring sultry rather than intricate vocals, and in any case the singing is almost secondary to the thumping bass and trickling electronica. Where it falls down is in the lack of a killer chorus (although the amazing bridge goes some way towards compensating for that) and the fact that it never really goes anywhere: as catchy as the staccato "gimme, gimme more, gimme MOAR, gimme, gimme MORE" is, it's no more or less insistent the first time you hear it than it is during the fadeout. And while I'm aware that this is still Britney Spears we're dealing with here, and that one should not expect a seven-minute emotional rollercoaster with realistic character development, I do want the song to take me somewhere, even if the road isn't especially bendy or bumpy.

Essentially, I had hoped to be blown off my feet by this single, but I also feared being crushingly disappointed. In the end neither of those were especially accurate and my mood-o-meter was hovering more around 'pleasantly satisfied', and I'm happy with that. Besides, if past experience is anything to go by, Britney always releases something slightly disappointing before bringing out the killer material (see also: 'I'm a Slave 4 U' and 'I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman' preceding 'Overprotected', and of course 'Me Against the Music' acting as the preamble to 'Toxic').

What I think we should all take away from this is that whatever else is going on, Britney can still deliver when she wants to. And importantly, this has got me very excited to hear the new album, and isn't that what lead singles are for after all?

To summarise: it's bold. It's brave. It's Britney, bitch.

Totally agree. Grrreat song, but I must say the video is dreadful. In that video she's fat, she's slow, she's not sexy, and comparing the shots of her booty with those we've seen recently when she was going out nicker-less AGAIN, me thinks there's been just a tad airbrushing... God it took a long time to retouch her, I mean that video was shot in August and we're only seeing it now...

Ah, to live in the land of the deluded. Must be nice.

This is a horrendous mess of a song, encompassing every conceivable self cliche as it hoovers up as many Britney by numbers reference points as possible, and shoves them into a song that is about 4 minutes too long.

I frankly don't care about her personal problems, as they don't seem any different from the schemies sitting outside Leith Woolies I see every day. But with money.

Rumour has it, her record company have lost interest as well, hence the perfunctory and embarrasing video, as well as the goth clown look they've approved for her album. If it ever comes out.

It's sad to have outlived your usefulness so early, but as tacky, manufactured popsters go, there's a whole new breed out there, and Britney is sooooo last century.

    Okay based on sound alone.

I think it's a cool song - kinda catchy - loved the intro of 'It's Britney, Bitch'.

    Based on video alone.

TRASH - Almost worse than PCD. Seriously who let her DO that?

Come on the fact the video isn't mentioned in the review pretty much says you agree with me xD.

Brit needs a new video. And some more clothes.

    Songs good though.

Okay I'm not even going to argue that the video is fabulous... but Britney is in no way fat in it, even forgetting the fact that she's had two children!! It's insane to even suggest that she is!

Besides, I don't understand how any less than that on a person can be sexy.

On the song side, it's awesome out in the clubs but it has to be really really loud to work properly IMO

Is it my eyes? Because i don't see this fat that everyone is talking about. Ok she's not stick thin... but that's about it... She looks about normal to me, not skinny, but not heavy or anything... i don't really get why people want their music stars to look skeletal because that's what must be normal if this is what is called fat.

Anyway about the song... i hate that i find it so catchy dammit. I admit the video is wicked lame though and it would almost be better to just have a blank screen with the track playing in the background.,..

In summary: Yeah for another stripper track!!!

I think that Gimme More is a great song. I was disappointed with the video but the song more than makes up for it - I listen to the songs hundreds of times instead of watching videos for songs hundreds of times.

After the leaks off the new album I am very impressed and the "It's Britney, bitch" is a great way to open the album as a whole - it is edgy, fun and something I am spending my money on the day it comes out.

I am hoping that Break The Ice, Piece Of Me and Radar become singles. On that note any of the songs on the album (bar one or two) would be great singles and I'm sad that State of Grace or Get Back will not be on the album. :(

"I'm Mrs. Lifestyles of the rich and famous... I'm Mrs. Oh my God that Britney's shameless... I'm Mrs Extra! Extra! this just in... I'm Mrs. she's too big now she's too thin..." - Piece of Me

I agree with that song. When she was proper thin she was always bashed for it. When she's not as thin (for someone who's had two kids in the span of time she did she looks AMAZING!) she's bashed for being 'fat'. I do not class that as anywhere near fat.

Absolutely loving this tune, Britney does what she does best, funky, sexy tune that has attitude all over it... Great song, the girl has had 2 kids and still looks great, let's see most of the UK girls at her age pull that off... It's very easy to be so critical of somebody when they are at their most vulnerable.

The video is sexy, she oozes confidence and still inspiration to millions.

The song's good, as is the rest of the album. the video is a disapointment, but it was due to being busy with court stuff, and as for her looks, i think she still has the ability of having a stunning face, and if thats fat i'm the queen mother!

Lets just hope the next video is as glossy as the stuff on the music channels now, she's lost even more weight since that video was filmed.

Britney's success and popularity are mind blowing.. Go Britney! Cannot wait for her great album BLACKOUT !!

Sev matey, you're blind - it's opinions like yours which promote all these eating disorders among young girls - I mean, she's what, a size 10 in the vid? I've never heard anything so ludicrous. I will confess to being a huge Britters fan, and I think the song is pretty cool - I also agree with the reveiw that there's probably better to come, as has previously happened with Brit. As for the video - ok, it has a pretty trashy feel to it, but for christs sake, if I looked like that in hotpants I wouldn't be complaining! And I'm confident that my bloke would be more than happy too! I think she's gorgeous - occasionally a little misguided, but gorgeous none the less. And in no way even remotely fat. Give the girl a break! Can't wait to get the album :-)

The video isnt the best of videos, but i like it! it may of been done in august, but who cares.... when britney gets back into the swing of things there will be no stopping her, she has had 4years off, so i think people should wait and see what the next video and album bring for Britney.

Its not often I spring to Britney Spears' defense, but will people PLEASE stop calling her fat? She DOESN'T look fat in this video. And so what if its been airbrushed, if it even has? Isn't that what everybody does these days anyway? What makes this case any different from the others?

I don't particularly like the song or video, but I feel maybe Britney wouldn't be in the mess she is now if people didn't react like that and poke their noses into her business. So just leave her alone just for ONE day please people? I mean, how would you feel if you were her? And by the sound of it, shes trying to salvage her career and life by coming back into the music industry again. Just cut her some slack.

Whew. I'm all talked out now. So, who wants to annoy me now? Lol.

Given the media's love of making Britney look like one of the worst examples of a human being on the planet, coupled with her disastrous MTV appearance, this single had such potential to be a complete and utter flop. Instead it's taken the UK by storm and people are shaking off the social stigma of being a "Britney fan" and coming out and saying they like a Britney tune.

I've bought the album 'Blackout' too and the songs only get better. There are going to be a couple more big club hits after this. Club exposure will help catapult Britney into popularity once again. If this album doesn't achieve that then I think all hope is lost. If she could just get a grip of her personal life the media could concentrate on giving her brilliant album positive coverage rather than negative coverage of her child custody battles and driving offenses.

I strongly advise everyone to get Blackout if you like 'Gimme More' - it's a treasure trove of electronic pop club/dance hits, and despite never being a hardcore Britney fan I can't help but feel a slight admiration for the woman.

Oh, but yes, the 'Gimme More' video is a disaster. The pole dancing is completely lackluster. However, I completely disagree that the woman is fat on any level, and I thought we were moving away from the Size 0 fad? Honestly, if someone's too thin they get scorned for having an eating disorder (Posh spice) or if they're healthy but not skinny they get called fat (Britney). Make up your mind people!
