Enrique Iglesias - 'Do You Know'

EnriqueThe world of sport is often poorly represented as a potential source of musical ideas. Oh sure, there's been endless football songs, and most of those use crowd noises and bits of TV commentary in the non-singy-bits. They do this to prove that the people who made the record really KNOW their beautiful game, and are in no way cashing on on a big event (although that blindingly overused "they think it's all over" clip can hardly be said to prove anything really. Putting that in your footy song is like claiming to be a professor of literature by pointing to a list of long words which you can read).

Anyway, the point is, it's not often the noises of sport itself find their way into the the tapestry of music, and even rarer that they should form part of the rhythm of the song they've been grafted into. Until now, that is. Yep, this is the song which uses a game of table tennis as a percussion instrument.

Now before you scoff too much, there's definitely something about the sound of a ping pong rally which is pleasing to the ear, it's sort of like a space-age update of the comforting tick of an old clock. You couldn't really nap to it, mind, cos usually it's accompanied by grunting and the occasional yell.

Thankfully Enrique's peeps have cut all that stuff out, it's not a grunty-shouty sort of a song, after all. It's more of a Backstreet Boys/Darius cast-off sort of a song, mid-way between ballad and butt-shaker, mid-way between heartfelt and total cheese, and mid-way between any good and total cack...well, not really MID-way...

The addition of the ping pong noises in the chorus is interesting, but very distracting, in that it sounds like someone was having a crafty rally in the background while the song was being recorded, and then they couldn't get rid of the noise. It doesn't really add anything, and detracts from whatever slim chance there was that the song could've taken you somewhere good in the first place.

So, bit of an own goal, really...

Not a bad song. I'm not really a fan of Enrique. (had 2 look how 2 spell his name!) The ping pong sound is really name and kinda gave me a headache as I listened to it on my headphones! It has a really strange video as well specially as it stops half way through the song which is just plain weird!

This song... is the worst... It's like a fishing hook... in my head... Made all the worse by the fact that there are parts which are catchy... hmmm.

Well, he's not the first person nto use a ping pong in his songs. Taiwan's Jay Chou used it in his song about his school days. Look for Jay Chou in YouTube... .... by the way Jay Chou's song it sounds much better than Enriques'!!!

Not a bad song but nowadays American way of pop sound dominates world music charts such as The Fray, Hellogoodbye, and of course Enrique.

This song will stay in Top 10 but i don't think Enrique will reach the top spot. Popularity of him can change this? God knows but i don't think so.

It gets 3 out of 5 from me.
