Simon Webbe - 'My Soul Pleads For You'

Post categories:

Simon WebbeOoh! Interesting! See, the problem with Simon Webbe is that his voice and style are so instantly familiar that you feel like you've heard far more of his songs than perhaps you have, and there's a temptation to conclude that he just does the same thing over and over again.

Part of the problem is that you're also factoring in the entire Blue back-catalogue AND some of the Lighthouse Family's biggest hits too (it's a tone of voice thing)...

Anyway, for once, here's a song in which Simon isn't trying to reassure you, the listener, that everything is sunny and lovely with that cuddly baritone of his. He actually sounds anguished. Like his soul, right, actually PLEADS, yeah? And it doesn't just plead for anyone, it pleads for YOU. YES YOU! ARE YOU LISTENING?

Now, this being a Simon Webbe song, the backing to this sudden turn to the dark and lonely side of the street is very warm and pleasant indeed. Musically, he does love his delicate acoustic guitar flourishes and four-part gospel harmonies, plus the odd scratch from a dusty turntable...but it does mean that the success of this song depends entirely on those vocal swoops, moans and wails.

So it's just as well he upped his game there with the singing, isn't it?
