Connan & The Mockasins - 'Sneaky Sneaky Dogfriend'
OK, I was sceptical too when I first heard the name. But then, I probably would have thought the same of The Beatles if I'd been around when they started. YES, in my first paragraph, I'm comparing Connan and the Mockasins to THE BEATLES. This can only cause trouble.
Oh, I hear you scornful young types as you giggle, "The Beatles?? Go back to your rocking chair, grandma!" And you, leagues of earnest Music enthusiasts - "The *lower voices and clasp hands* Beatles? Wash your mouth out, lady!"
All I'm saying is, don't be prejudiced if you think the name is just a bit twee. For behind the name is the music. And the music promising great pleasure for your ears is! Once you've listened, the name makes all kinds of sense.
It begins with a '50s rockabilly shuffle. Then a demented chorus about a rabid dog. And all accompanied by hand claps (which in some circles are an accepted core ingredient of a musical masterpiece).
I love this song so much I want to steal it and pretend I wrote it. I want to knit sock puppets and make videos using it as the soundtrack. I want to tattoo 'I'm With Connan' on my forehead. It's music unshadowed by ego, it's music made f!u!n! and it shines a light on a place in the world where it's still summertime. Waiter, five stars, please!
Released: February 5th

Conan are brilliant! I caught them live at The Spice of Life a few months ago and how refreshing it was to have something new and fantastic to listen to. In these days of Brit rock dominance there are so many bands out there banging the same drum.
Conan stand out from the crowd.
Connan & The Mockasins are fun fun fun! Saw them at the Metro Bar last year, sneaky indeed. Choice NZ band, proud of you guys!
Perfect description of a perfect song!!!
I've seen these guys a couple of times. Once at Buffalo Bar and once at Notting Hill Arts Club and they were fantastic!!
If anyone hasn't seen them live they should.
The only problem I have is, I want more than just a single!!
Bring on an album please!!!
Well done to Connan & the guys!
We love you back home in sunny summertime New Zealand and we're so proud of you guys and what you are doing!
I fondly remember being equally skeptical as this reviewer, when I first heard the band name - and that you were in Auckland visiting from Wellington and your bass player had dreds (ha! remember the dreds!) - and even more fondly remember seeing you play for the first time at the legendary Edens Bar (remember that dive! OMG!) on K Rd and being totally blown away and forced to eat my skeptical thoughts! I knew then you were destined for greater things!
You guys ruled last month at the Kings Arms when you played with The Checks too!
love yas!
