One fine spring day in Primary School, while the lesson was droning on in the background, this song came into my mind -as it often did - unconsciously, almost involuntarily, I sang out loud the John Lennon scream from the end of the middle eight of this track. Satisfied that there was, in fact, nothing the matter with me, Miss Johnstone took me out to the front of the class and belted me senseless. It cemented my love affair with The Beatles and this track in particular. Incredibly, this was normal behaviour by some of the sadists that passed for educators in 1964.The incident came back to me years later when I was watching Dennis Potter's 'The Singing Detective' and its portrayal of a similar sadist. Its amazing I learned anything at all.

Going for some more Elton. He's a bit stomping and thumping like a parody of a talented pianist at times but there's no denying the man can play and sing. And Bernie can write. And this is a lovely, sweet and brief little tune to finish a fantastic album:

First of all I find it difficult to believe that someone actually requested Hanging on the Telephone as a song they would really like to hear on the show. Secondly, that the producer thought that it would be really good to play it on the show yet again.

A bit of Queen and Abba thrown in for good measure too I see...

Sheesh.

whereas Brian Matthews happily played Abba Zaba last Saturday morning.

Too few subject matter experts leads to lack luster programming!

Opening tracks on albums have to be punchy and grab the attention. Closing tracks should be long, inventive and richly instrumented, therefore not IO fodder. I would once have picked A Day In The Life but it would benefit from more intelligent use of the orchestra.

#20,Kene,got to support you on "Polegnala E Todora".There are few GIO themes that this would "fit".Maybe "Most beautiful harmonies ever" or "Music to make your hair stand on end".I expect Bryan has had a World Music theme before but if not then this would be the perfect choice for such a theme.Coincidentally I have just booked tickets to see the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir at Kelvingrove Art Gallery on 11th Feb. performing "Holy Minimalist" composer Arvo Part's "Kanon Pokajanen" which owes more to Russian Orthodox music but still electrifyingly beautiful.Cheers,Willie Bartke

"Little Red Robin Hood Hit the Road" by the mighty Robert Wyatt from the ineffable "Rock Bottom" assisted by the saintly Ivor Cutler. This is a proper album - the tracks have links to each other, and ideally should be listened to at one sitting. It closes out the album in a mixture of sinster and humorous tones, which more or less sum up what has gone before.
I'm tempted not to go for the easy options, but...
"Rock'n'Roll Suicide" by David Bowie from "The Rise & Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars" - again, closes out the story;
"Riders on the Storm" by the Doors from "LA Woman" - classy ending to the album and, though not deliberate, to Mr Mojo Risin'.

Great openers tends to be more radio friendly than great endings, but I hope you stick to the theme with those that are genuinely thought-out as closing tracks, rather than just easy-radio tracks that just happen to be left til last on the album? And NO WAY should a compilation album track be featured imho.
