Illustrating the Six Nations - suggestions please

Post categories:

It's Six Nations time again and my team are preparing a series of images to illustrate the matches for when they appear on 91Èȱ¬ iPlayer. For the past two years we have used composites of painted faces (see the example below) but this year we want to try something different. We have a few ideas but nothing stellar, so I'm opening it up to suggestions from you* which you can post in the comments.

* We don't want specific players - these images go up before any given match and we can't guarantee that the player we use will be in the game.

Do we know if any of the matches will be broadcast on 91Èȱ¬ Two or 91Èȱ¬ Three?

Steven - I think you're off topic. Unless this will make a difference to your suggestions for illustrations or images...

Steven (and I) may be off-topic Nick but in the interest of being helpful I request that you permit me to tell him that the 91Èȱ¬'s official webpage for his question gives him the official answer here: - and it seems to be NO. However, interestingly, that line is contradicted by the 91Èȱ¬ press office with their statement here: /pressoffice/pressreleases/stories/2010/01_january/27/rugby.shtml; where it's stated that the France v Italy match will be broadcast on 91Èȱ¬ Two on 14 March. Helpfully, the press office also confirm on that page that the 91Èȱ¬ will also "be broadcasting every match in this year's RBS Six Nations Championship in high definition (HD) for the first time". Something the other site failed to mention.

so's not to incur your wrath Nick, I actually meant to add my own (on topic) suggestion for Ashley's illustrations to my comment above. How about using existing art of famous nationals from each of the 6 Nations? Not wishing to offend anyone with these choices but, without any in-depth analysis, I just googled some possible examples:

    England - Richard:

    Wales - Llewelyn:

    Scotland - Wallace:

    Ireland - Brian

    France - Napoleon:

    Italy - Garibaldi:

more art examples from wiki on same theme as #4:

    France -

    Italy -

    England -

    Scotland -

    Wales -

    Ireland -

Simple aerial stadium photographs, with two overlays

The first Gradient Translucent National Flags fading to clear, from left to 1/3rd of the screen for the home side and from right to the 2/3rds point for the away side. Ihe cehtre 1/3rd showing just the stadium shot.

The second the National Association crests of the competing countries.

Looking at a few of the examples you suggested like:

    France - Napoleon:

    Italy - Garibaldi:

I don't really think these would be the best. Right on the front page right now of this site there is an image that I think would be better suited.

Betty, #7 - can't get the link to work.

Thank you all for these suggestions - I will go over these with one of my picture editors and see what we can achieve with the assets we have at our disposal.

    I shall keep you posted.

Ashley, thanks. I just noticed that the system used on these Blogs to automatically link to webpages has got confused by the wiki ones I posted at #5. The colon, after the word File on each, seems to have caused confusion. To see what pictures I meant to show, instead of clicking the automatic link, your picture editors will have to copy and paste the whole http line that follows each Nation into a web browser address bar.

    Thanks Paul :-)

Just a quick update. This has been a lot tougher than we first envisaged. I tried to find pictures to develop the themes mentioned in this thread and hit brickwall after brickwall. The images for composites need to be roughly the same dimensions and style for them to work efectively. In this instance the images we had at our disposal varied too widely to make the final composite work.

So we are going for a new set of painted faces, with a lot more action, charm and appeal.

However, there are a few big events coming up over the spring which would benefit from the discussions in this thread, so keep 'em peeled.

Hi Ashley. MC&A in 91Èȱ¬ Wales have some new painted faces for the Six Nations. We're using them on the Wales homepage now and then during the tournament. Give MC&A a call and they'll be able to help, should you need them.
