91Èȱ¬ TV on the web redefined
Today is a big day for 91Èȱ¬ television on the web with the launch of brand new websites for 91Èȱ¬ One, 91Èȱ¬ Two and 91Èȱ¬ Four as well as an updated 91Èȱ¬ Three site (building on February's relaunch) and a new TV homepage.
It also heralds the switch on of live streaming (simulcast) for 91Èȱ¬ Four, C91Èȱ¬ and CBeebies, joining 91Èȱ¬ Three, 91Èȱ¬ News and 91Èȱ¬ Parliament, which are already available to watch live online, with 91Èȱ¬ One and 91Èȱ¬ Two due to follow later this year [see recent press release and previous multicast trial].
Last but by no means least, today also marks the passage of /programmes from beta to fully
fledged live service, boasting a permanent, findable web presence for every TV and radio programme that the 91Èȱ¬ broadcasts.
A lot of things to launch all on one day? Unquestionably, but it's indicative of the increasingly interconnected nature of the 91Èȱ¬'s online offer, where the channel websites are no longer discrete content areas, but are fully integrated with the wider programmes offer and beyond.
So, how did we set about redesigning (and hopefully improving) some of the most visited pages on bbc.co.uk? Well, we started with your feedback on the previous sites, collected via the bbc.co.uk Pulse survey, which told us that the basic tasks of finding out what's on television and quickly locating information on specific programmes were most important and could be made easier.
With this in mind, we placed a schedule carousel along the top of the new channel homepages and a snapshot of what's on now and next across every 91Èȱ¬ TV channel at the heart of the new TV homepage. We also added a Programmes A-Z module to the top right of all of these pages to provide quick access to the wealth of programme information housed within the newly minted /programmes.
A significant development since the channel websites were last refreshed (in July 2007) is the availability of catch-up programming via 91Èȱ¬ iPlayer, which we've reflected via a dedicated module on each of the homepages, showcasing the most popular programmes on demand with a link through to the full iPlayer offer. iPlayer availability is also reflected in the schedule carousel with a Watch Now button appearing for programmes which can be viewed on demand and Watch Live buttons for those being simulcast.
The eagle-eyed among you might notice that the channel homepages have a discreet temporal metaphor to them, with past programming on the left of the page, the present reflected in the centre, and future highlights to the right, reflecting the expanding life of programmes beyond a single moment of transmission (for more on this topic, check out ex-91Èȱ¬ staffer Dan Hill's blog post on ).
Lower down on the homepages, you'll find links to top video clips, photo galleries and "Be on a Show" information, as well as channel-specific elements such as 91Èȱ¬ Four's Newsletter and comments forums.
Of course, it's not all about the homepages. Behind the schedule links are full TV listings for each of the channels (including regional variations), which are fully integrated with /programmes, meaning they will they will be permanently accessible, unlike the What's On What's On listings (which these will replace) which became inaccessible after just two days.
Each channel site also has an area for channel trailers (known in the industry as ), compiling the stings that appear between programmes on 91Èȱ¬ One, 91Èȱ¬ Two, 91Èȱ¬ Three and 91Èȱ¬ Four.
Far too many people have contributed to the above projects to list them individually; suffice to say it's been a truly pan-91Èȱ¬ effort with colleagues from Vision, Audio & Music and Future Media & Technology all collaborating to raise the bar for the 91Èȱ¬'s programme and channel support online.
We're really keen to hear your feedback on the new sites, so please leave a comment below.

I could find the 91Èȱ¬ Four one just fine through its new site, but no link to the C91Èȱ¬/Cbeebies ones. Are links to these going to be put on each one's homepage too, or are links to be provided through the iPlayer itself?

I don't know if this is your brief, but any chance you can fix the TV schedule on the homepage so that after 10pm (or earlier) it shows later TV programmes rather than the early evening schedule. Annoys me a bit that you can't instantly see what's on at 10.30 sometimes.

I don't really have any use for increasingly cute implementations of the 'channels' metaphor.
I don't know how much of the design was the result of focus-testing. However it seems more like an elaborate attempt at trying to prove the relevance of broadcast delivery to an audience that is increasingly migrating online and has stopped watching.
On a more constructive note, the links to the channel pages are pretty deeply buried on the 91Èȱ¬.co.uk front page, although I assume this will change soon. Also, having to scroll to the bottom of a channel page to get to the channels menu is fiddly and unintuitive.
Having a top-level section for channel idents is a bit frivolous. Programme trailers (for example) would be more useful.
Also! It's a bit disconcerting that there isn't a central textual thread (a 'web log' if you will) tracking pertinent updates in a manageable way.
The page looks like an Interactive TV frontend (wide, cluttered, dozens of clashing styles, nothing to guide the eye to anything), rather than a readable website.
Seriously, I use news.bbc.co.uk every day - why can't the rest of the 91Èȱ¬'s web presence take some cues from this instead of assaulting the visitor with a jumble of multicoloured boxes?

In any case, after spending money changing it, the 91Èȱ¬ is not likely to change anything back on the strength of a few complaints.

It could be a matter of getting used to it, but I already miss some of the old functions:
#1: One can no longer immediately spot the movies to be aired. There used to be the word FILM over a dark background, how could one miss them?
#2: The 8-day (Mon-Mon, or Wed-Wed, depending on the current day of the week) links on top and on the bottom for the weekly schedule are now gone! They were really useful and I sometimes advised webmasters in my own country to take a look at 91Èȱ¬'s efficient design. It's gone, now, even though that calendar on the right could be helpful too.
#3: When one clicks on a programme a page opens showing all kind of details, but one has to go back to check on other items; the details at the top of the daily schedule page were really handy.
#4: The link for 'Drama', or that for 'Film' for that matter, opens a page with an alphabetical list of shows, movies, etc, but there's no immediate reference to the dates of the next airings.
I hope this isn't a definitive version...

@TellyCurator - Apart from the Embedded Media Player, there is no flash on the new pages - the dynamic components are all built using Javascript. If it's simple lists of what's on that you're after then the Schedule pages (e.g. 91Èȱ¬ Two Schedule) are only one click away from any of the pages.
@jostafford - Thanks for flagging. This was a temporary glitch we fixed within a couple of hours on the 17th.
@davidword - You can see what's on all the main channels for the day by selecting one of the channel schedules (e.g. 91Èȱ¬ One Schedule and then clicking on the logos to the right).

@joerichards - Thanks for your kind words. I will add clickable TV logo (linking back to the homepage) to the list of fixes. Weekly schedule view is on it's way (see above response to JollyFlyCatcher).
@grammargrub - 91Èȱ¬ Four weekly schedule view should be up and running in a couple of weeks.
@pmpepe - Thanks for your feedback. In response to your specific points:
#1: We'll have a think about how best to sign-post films in the schedule. In the interim, we've created new data views which show you every film on 91Èȱ¬ One from the week just gone and the week ahead. We will shortly be introducing a schedule view of this data which will enable you to easily see when all those films are being broadcast (similar to this view of today's drama programmes on 91Èȱ¬ One).
#2: The calendar does provide the same functionality. We'll look into whether other users are missing the links along the top.
#3: The details which used to appear at the top of the daily schedule now appear under each programme title in the Schedule (unless you select the 'Schedule at a glance' view of course)
#4: Schedule views for genres (e.g. Drama) are already being published (see today's drama programmes on 91Èȱ¬ One) and are on the way for formats (e.g. Film) - we just haven't exposed them in the interface yet (for the technically minded there is more information on the various data views at the 91Èȱ¬ Programmes Developers page).

The previous version was beautifully simple and easy to understand, a model of how it should be done.
With the new version, it's impossible to tell the type of each programme. As previous posters have commented, films are not highlighted (crucial year and director information is missing as well), but it's also impossible to tell where are the comedies, dramas, documentaries, etc at a glance (except for those rare people who can recognise and identify every title from memory).
Then there are entries such as:

91Èȱ¬ News
26/12/2008
The latest national and international news stories from the 91Èȱ¬, followed by Weather.
and:
03:15–03:20
Weatherview
27/12/2008
Detailed weather forecast.
Why are the dates there? It's not as though we are expecting last week's news, or next week's weather. The comments are a bit superfluous as well.
Then there are the genre pages (e.g. /bbcone/programmes/formats/films, /bbcone/programmes/formats/documentaries%29. Where are the dates/times of broadcast? In the case of films, again, where is the important date and director information? Why are titles beginning with "The" listed under "T"?
As I said, these pages used to be beautifully simple. Now, for me at least, they are almost unusable. To cap it all, the new pages appear to be slower as well. So, I am afraid I will have to go back to tvguide.co.uk.

Some answers:
@kevicon, @charmingA-K and others - we hear you loud and clear re. the difficulty of easily seeing what's on across all channels and have starting working on a cross-channel schedule. watch this space...
@Vee3469 and @Reggie Bardfast - weekly schedule views are now live (here's the 91Èȱ¬ Four weekly schedule at a glance) and we will shortly be adding easy navigation to them from the daily schedules
@TellyCurator and @baggish - adding a 'films' icon is in our backlog of functionality to add and we are continually working to improve the quality of the cast information
@BrianTho - I have suggested duplicating the calendar at the bottom of the screen to the development team - will let you know what they come back with
@john4703 - glad you've come round to the new pages :)
@Sue_Aitch - Signed programmes are already listed in the iPlayer Sign Zone and we are working to add this and audio description information to the /programmes pages (visit the About the 91Èȱ¬ site for more information)

Please would you ask the Ceefax and Red Button Editors and the See Hear and In Touch Teams to announce the accessibility changes to the /programmes pages when they happen, Dan?

Now you have to go to the bottom of the program page and take more steps to get to the same result. No reason to make it more difficult.

What I am already missing on this latest page is the link to the 91Èȱ¬2 schedule, that was on the right near the calendar. This was very handy. I know there is a link to the 91Èȱ¬2 home page - right at the bottom of the page now, but then one has to look for the programme schedule.
One other question about the 'old' new format, which I didn't have time to ask as it wasn't there long enough (!!) is "why, when scrolling down the schedule page, does (did) the link to the other schedules not automatically follow. One always has (had) to scroll right back to the top to select another schedule.
It would be great if the links to schedules (not home pages) could be put back and even better if they moved with one when scrolling down the page.
I always live in hope.

Now you have to go through the home page of each channel - why make this change, it's made navigation between the scheule pages more cumbersome. Not an improvement, a disapointing degredation of service

It's only available for viewers in the UK. The old system was a bit fuzzy but at least you could watch it here in France. I am sure there are hundreds if not thousands of UK overseas residents who are mourning the old system just like me. Annus Domini creeping on and the 91Èȱ¬ is the strongest link to home. How I can survive without Jeremy Paxton in my living room now and then, I just don't know!

Seeing the programme "My Life in Verse" on Friday 29th May is to be the first of four, I thought I would look to see who and when for the other three.
No information at all. Not a clue. is it weekly, monthly, yearly? Have you made them yet? Do you really not know?

The Programmes site, which Dan mentions in the post above, does hold at least a partial answer, and now knows that episode two will be broadcast (in England, Scotland and Wales) next week, e.g. 9pm on Friday 5th June.
Beyond that, the schedule doesn't seem to commit yet. Keep an eye on the page which lists the upcoming episodes for that programme which will be updated closer to the time. I do hope you enjoy it.
