Pick your classic Japanese Grand Prix

As those who follow the sport closely know only too well, is a hotbed of rumours and gossip - some of which turns out to be true, some of which does not.

One of the many whispers that have been knocking around recently is that the future of the is not especially rosy.

The story is that its place on the calendar is vulnerable because of all the new races is determined to put on, and that it could drop off the schedule in the next couple of years, or perhaps alternate with .

Should these claims turn out to have any foundation, I would not be the only one to be concerned about an F1 calendar without Japan - many of the drivers in F1 would feel the same way.

That's because the circuit is arguably the greatest in the world, right up there with and as a place that tests the best drivers on the planet to the absolute limit.

It is also rich in history - a small but dramatic sample of which features in the latest edition of our classic F1 series.

We have four absolutely cracking races for you to choose from this time. But before I go through the options, a quick reminder of the rules.

We select four great past races, and you - by way of responses on this blog - tell us which one is your favourite.

We use those views to inform our selection of the race for which we will show the full 'Grand Prix' highlights programme of the time, alongside the shorter highlights packages we cut for all the races.

The slight complication is that we can only show the 'Grand Prix' programme when there was one - so there is no longer highlights option when a race falls within the ITV era - from 1997-2008.

As it happens, only one of the latest selections does - 1998. The others are 1990, '93 and '95.

And to head off the inevitable criticisms of that choice, I'd like to point out that 1976, 1989, 1994, 2000 and 2005 were all choices last year.

So, a quick run-down of what you're choosing from.

The infamous 1990 race was the second chapter of the notorious Senna-Prost story in Japan.

In 1989, won the title after a hugely contentious race, from which was controversially disqualified following a collision between the two team-mates.

In 1990, with Prost now driving for , they were again disputing the title, and the situation going into the race was the exact opposite of the year before - if neither finished, this time it would be Senna who would be crowned champion, not Prost.

Senna was determined to take his revenge - a determination that was heightened when pole position was switched to, in Senna's view, the 'wrong' side of the track.

Ayrton Senna crashes into Alain Prost at the start of the 1990 Japanese Grand Prix

Unknown to observers, he had decided that if Prost, who qualified second, beat him away from the line, the Frenchman would not make it around the first corner.

And, sure enough, Senna ploughed straight into the back of Prost's Ferrari at 160mph at the entry to Turn One, taking both men out of the race.

In the wake of all that drama, few remember the race itself.

It should have been a straight battle between Senna and Prost's respective team-mates, and .

But Berger spun out of the lead on the second lap, leaving apparently cruising to an easy victory from the Benettons of Brazilians and .

This, though, was another of those races that added to the Mansell's reputation for losing out for any one of a number of bizarre reasons.

This time, an over-enthusiastic getaway from his tyre stop broke the Ferrari's driveshaft, and his race was run, leaving his arch-rival Piquet to lead home a Benetton one-two.

Our next choice is 1993, and one of Senna's many brilliant wet-weather victories. The race is not remembered for that, though, but for the explosive F1 debut of .

The Northern Irishman had become a Suzuka expert in three years' racing in , and he was drafted in by for the final two races of the season.

Irvine was the talk of the paddock even before the race. He qualified eighth, four places up on team-mate , and his media interviews had already made it clear that he was a unique, irreverent personality.

In the race, his impressive performance on the track continued when he jumped up to fifth at the start. But it was what he did later on in the race, after it had started to rain, that really made his name.

Senna was battling for the lead with Prost, who had already been crowned world champion for in his final season in F1.

When Senna came up to lap Irvine, the Jordan was embroiled in a battle with Prost's team-mate .

Initially, Irvine let Senna past, but when Senna then struggled to pass Hill, Irvine unlapped himself, greatly angering the Brazilian, and went on to try to overtake Hill.
Irvine failed, Senna lapped him again, and then finally went past Hill - but by this time he had lost 15 seconds to Prost.

Senna went on to win but he was still cross about Irvine's cheekiness after the race and - after a couple of drinks - his friend Berger wound him up that he should go and have a word with the disrespectful newcomer.

Senna went off to the Jordan offices to confront Irvine, but he did not find him as apologetic as he expected. Instead, Irvine answered back, and the two got into an by the journalist , a close friend of Irvine, who happened to be with him at the time.

Irvine at one point even said Senna had not been going fast enough and eventually it all got too much for Senna, and the two men came to blows.

The next choice is the 1995 Japanese race and, for those who have witnessed , a timely reminder of his former greatness.

The great German had already clinched his second consecutive title for Benetton. And it had been a painful year for his rival, Hill. The Englishman had the faster car, but Schumacher - in Hill's words from an interview I did with him a couple of years ago - "ran rings around us".

Suzuka was one of many examples of that, the German romping to a brilliant victory in a wet-dry race as Hill and team-mate struggled in his wake.

Hill spun twice at the same corner, Spoon, the second terminally, and Coulthard also suffered an embarrassing retirement, losing control on gravel that came out of his sidepods as he braked for 130R, the corner after his own off-course excursion at Spoon.

Our final choice is 1998, the race at which McLaren's clinched his first world title.

The Finn went into the race with a four-point lead over Schumacher, who qualified his Ferrari on pole just ahead of Hakkinen.

But the German stalled on the grid and had to start from the back, allowing Hakkinen to coast to an easy win. Schumacher kept interest alive by fighting brilliantly back to third place, only for his tyre to explode and force him into retirement.

So, a great selection, I hope you'll agree. I look forward to reading your thoughts.

UPDATE 1000 THURSDAY 30 SEPTEMBER:

Thanks for all your responses so far. This was always going to be a tough choice, wasn't it?

I have to let you all know of a slight change of plan. Our multimedia team have discovered that there is a technical problem with the tape of the 1998 race which means that we will not be able to offer the highlights for that one next week. It's a shame, I know, but it's unavoidable, I'm afraid.

So there'll just be the three races next week, plus the long and short highlights of last year's race. Normal service will be resumed in two weeks' time for the new South Korea race, for which we will offer a selection of great races from circuits no longer on the calendar. It's worth waiting for, I can assure you.

Andrew how about 2003 when Schumacher clinched the title by a single point? That was one of the most intense race I had ever watched, ofcourse with the way Lewis won his title nothing will beat that for years to come.

All great 1993 best option. Can't wait

  • Comment number 3.

    Ooohhh! 1990 please!!!!!

  • Comment number 4.

Another good selection, and I'm struggling to choose 1, so I'll go for 1993.

  • Comment number 5.

I'd love to see 1993 for full highlights. Whilst 1990 will always remain one of the most controversial races of all time, it really only centres on the run down to the first corner. As far as I can tell, not much else happened in the remainder of the race, except for a rather unusual podium of Piquet Moreno and Suzuki. So for that reason, i'd say 1993 is a better choice as the race had more action.

  • Comment number 6.

1993 please. Great choices as usual.

1990 was a pivotal race in F1 history, but I'm sure the 10 minute edit will cover it adequately.

  • Comment number 7.

    1993 please.

  • Comment number 8.

Andrew - you might like to change the line "And to head off the inevitable criticisms of that choice, I'd like to point out that 1976, 1989, 2000 and 2005 were all choices last year." to include the 1994 GP which was also included and was arguably the race that showed how excellent Hill was in the wet (running rings around Schumacher).

    This time, 1993 please.

  • Comment number 9.

Gotta be 1993 so I can see my countryman Irvine's explosive debut. Three points:

    1. Sorry to be a pedant Andrew, but Berger was by 1993 no longer Senna's team mate,

    2. Why is it everyone always rambles on about Schumacher's debut at Spa in 1991, when he qualified eighth? He was only promoted to seventh when there was a problem for somebody in front of him. And Irvine, I believe, finished sixth in his debut race, having also qualified in the same position as his future team mate. Just fancied a rant ;)

    3. Would like to see footage of Suzuki standing on the podium: it doesn't feature in the 1990 season review video.

  • Comment number 10.

1993 please, i've never seen it and it sounds great!

  • Comment number 11.

1995 of course! It would be great to see a young Schumacher race again and see Hill bite the dust. :)

  • Comment number 12.

i remember the 1995 race was a great masterclass from schumi, stirling drive from alesi in the ferrari was riviting before he retired and the williams's, well, less said the better. but then 1993 was a truly great show by the legend that was and still is, Ayrton Senna. still hard when you think about it, that he is gone. :-( either one would be great to relieve andrew

  • Comment number 13.

1995 please Andrew. Could desperatly be doing with seeing the real Schumacher as opposed the shadow that's currently in F1. Besides, I was too young to see any either of the title wins with Bennetton, which I've been told were more impressive than the ones from 2000-2004 given the superiority of the Ferrari in those years. Wonder how many titles Michael would've won had he been given a Williams drive in his first season like Hamilton was given his McLaren seat. Scary thought?

  • Comment number 14.

For me it has to be 1998.
I was fortunate enough to be there with the McLaren Team, and celebrated Mika's win in style, but have never seen the broadcast of this race.
The cheer when Michael messed up the start of the formation lap was incredible, as was his battle throughout the race only to suffer the tyre failure.

  • Comment number 15.

What about 1996? I see it's not on last years version either and it was one of the first races I remember plus the last on the 91Èȱ¬ and it resulted in a British world champion.

  • Comment number 16.

    1993 Please.

  • Comment number 17.

As it was great seeing Eddie Irvine on the Forum after the Italian GP it's got to be 1993. Pity there isn't video of the punch-up afterwards.

  • Comment number 18.

1993 just for the arrogance of Eddie Irvine.

  • Comment number 19.

Another good selection this week Andrew, although have you not any more from the 80's or 70's? Not that i'm complaining, maybe next year, though, please!

As for this selection, although i assume most people would go for the 1990 race i would like to see the 1993 race please. It seems from the write up that it was a more eventfull & drama packed race than 1990, &, come on lets face it, everybody knows what happend in that race.

So 1993 for me please Andrew.

Great work as ever, & great post race blog on the Singapore Grand Prix, all very interesting, keep it up!!

  • Comment number 20.

Gotta be 2005. Kimi's Last lap win as i've started to call it.
Plus Alonso overtaking Schumi at 130r was just pure genius. Please please show that one i've not seen it in ages and wanna watch it again.

  • Comment number 21.

To 8 and 9, thanks for pointing out those oversights - duly amended.

  • Comment number 22.

    WHERE'S 1996!

  • Comment number 23.

It has to be 1993 just for Irvine unlapping himself and then getting punched by Senna after the race. If I remember correctly ITV miss Schumacher's retirement in 1998 an I was mad about that.

  • Comment number 24.

I think 1995 for me please Andrew. the 10 miute edits will be able to cover the rest of the races.

FOR THOSE WHO WANT 1996. IT WAS DONE IN LAST YEAR'S ABU DHABI TITLE DECIDER'S CLASSIC GP BLOG!

    Hope that helps.

i wish 1996 was in the selection. the way Hill powered to victory was incredible.

    Greetings Andrew

Ho Ho Ho Irvine saying to Senna he was not fast enough. If that scene is in the footage I'd love to see it otherwise I'll settle for 1998 and Mika en route to his first title. Pity Alain Prost never won in Japan, the only regular GP fixture from that era that was missing from his impressive list of victories.

    Cheers

    1993 please

  • Comment number 29.

For excitement reasons it has to be 1998! How difficult can it be to start a Grand Prix??
Nice to watch schumacher in full form! What a shame we have not seen this Schumi in 2010.

  • Comment number 30.

Please, please, please, please, please implore the people 'that be' in Formula One, Andrew, to not let them drop the Japanese Grand Prix!!!! Please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Comment number 31.

Alonso round the outside of Schumacher at 130R, Premium

  • Comment number 32.

Think I might have to go for 1993 here.

  • Comment number 33.

When I watched the 1990 race live there was an interview with Senna following 'the' crash transmitted during the race. As I recall it was eyewateringly vitriolic against Prost and the F1 world in general, I've never heard it since, has it been erased from the tapes?

  • Comment number 34.

1990 please. Classic race with a shocking start and a very strange podium!

  • Comment number 35.

    1993 please

  • Comment number 36.

1995 please andrew and for everyone saying 1996 then it may be shown in the classic title deciders selection for the abu dhabi grand prix in november

  • Comment number 37.

    Japan 2007 please.....a great race

  • Comment number 38.

Is the threat to the Japanese GP a consequence of first Honda and then Toyota - with interests in the circuits used for the Japan GP - withdrawing their works teams from F1?

If Korea is Bernie's new 'blue-eyed' boy of the far East, can we expect pressure to build for a KIA-engined team?

  • Comment number 39.

    Gotta be 1993 for me..
I dont seem to be able to remember Irvine's debut for some reason. Maybe because my first memory of Irvine is when he cut across Verstappen and caused a 4 car pile up (at Brazil 94 I think?) resulting in Martin Brundel's head flapping about all over the shop after Verstappen barrel rolled over his car.

  • Comment number 40.

So you can't show extended highlights from 1997-2008, so why include an option from this era? So if 1998 is chosen, will there be no extended highlights and just the short highlights for all options? Strange.

  • Comment number 41.

Could you please do 1996 for me i love seening Damon Hill winning the championship again. And the famous comment made by Murray Walker when he crossed the line and i also know that Murray had a soft spot for Damon.

  • Comment number 42.

    96 ;)

  • Comment number 43.

Just think how many titles would Michael have won if he had people like Hamilton, Alonso, Vettel against him in the early 2000's? Not as many that's for sure. Whilst I do not doubt that he WAS great you have to remember that there wasn't really any one else! And yes I know that's not his fault.

    1993 Please

I totally agree. You can only beat what is put in front of you BUT any real competition Schumacher had went when Hakkinen retired in all fairness. If the field had been as tight as it is now would've given far greater value to having won those titles, rather than having to beat his team mate and drivers like...um, Ralf, DC, Jenson in the Honda?

  • Comment number 44.

I'm actually a little disappointed that there's been no mention at all of 1996. I mean, Damon won the title!!

I can remember staying up at the age of 10, crying with joy as Villeneuve crashed and as Damon crossed the line. It was one of the best memories I have as a boy. He was and is my childhood hero, and it would've been great to see that again. Maybe next year, folks?

And while we're at it, any chance of repeating last year's and this year's choices next year, along with whatever you plan for 2011? I personally believe you're wasting a great chance of having more than five races repeated over and over again on the red button for four days. You can't say you have no time to show them as they're constantly shown from Wednesday through till Friday. Loads of time!!!

Of your choices, 1995 was the best. Alesi showed his style and speed. 1990 was all about turn one, the race itself was fairly dull after that.

  • Comment number 45.

    1998 please.

  • Comment number 46.

Whoah, I'm really spoilt for choice this time around!!! 1990 is the obvious one, 1993 would be good too, but so is 1998, as I haven't seen that race either, taking all things into perspective, I think 1993 will be my choice this time Andrew

  • Comment number 47.

    1990 what else

  • Comment number 48.

1993 seems to be going to win, and I'd like to add to that as I'd love to see it.

Also I agree with comment #19. It would be amazing to see some really old highlights next year, seeing the drivers who I have heard so much about from the past. However the highlights we have been treated to in the last two years have been fantastic.

  • Comment number 49.

In response to comment #24, fair enough if it was shown last year, but that's kind of my point. Some of us who weren't able to access the red button's great features straight away didn't know when the races were being shown. I didn't even know about Classic F1 till half way through last year, and I certainly didn't know it was on the red button.

Can we please have these races repeated next year, the choices from 09, 2010 and 2011 together wouldn't exactly take up more air time as I said before it's repeated continuously for three days.

So any chance you can give us what we want??

  • Comment number 50.

People, the previous selections are here: /blogs/andrewbenson/andrew_benson/

    1993 please...

  • Comment number 51.

can we have 93 please...!!! and can we hear the 'taped meeting' between Senna & Irvine too??? and why is there no option to show the races from 1997 - 2008? I know they are ITV highlights, but Im sure you can do something????? Otherwise an excellent blog.

  • Comment number 52.

1993 Please Andrew. Kind of surprised that 1996 wasn't included in the list, otherwise I would have picked that! Could it be included as a double header of F1 highlights which you have done in the past?

  • Comment number 53.

    1990 Please.

  • Comment number 54.

I would hope the Japanese GP is not dropped, Suzuka is a great track and Fuji made some thrilling viewing.
Would be a major tragedy if Bernie was to remove it, it should stay, the Japanese Fans are mad for F1 and Fuji TV's coverage was brilliant.
Anyway, I would like to see 1993 as well, something other then that in 1990, which has been shown to death in years gone by.
As for no more longer highlights from ITV races is a disgraceful decision, ITV had some memorable races but the 91Èȱ¬ cannot be bothered to get them longer, real tradegy like the option not to edit ITV's long highlights as well when this all started, still the wrong decision.

  • Comment number 55.

    1993 please
Like to see 1996 just for the fact hill won the wdc

  • Comment number 56.

    1995 please

  • Comment number 57.

Its easy to lump Japan in with all the other Asain hosting countries, but people should always rememeber, the Japanese have been Motor Sport mad for decades, whether it has been Motorbikes or F1 Cars / Engines. Losing a Japanese GP is the same as losing one of the Major historic European rounds. Hope it never happens.

Out of the selection my favorite is 1998. Stayed up to watch it and the opening 15 laps from Schumacher were incredible. He absolutely wrestled the car round this fantastic circuit when he had nothing to lose.

However as we'll see 10minutes of it wanyway, i'll go for 1990. Great though Senna was, i grew up watching his antics, many of which would make Schumacher blush. 1990 being a prime example. Disgraceful but fantastic, dramatic TV.

(Like last time Andrew, Tell the freeview Controller NOT to put Classic F1 on the red button, he'll no doubt then do the opposite like last time. Fingers crossed, as its a great selection)

  • Comment number 58.

Hello Andrew Hello everyone. What a selection we got here. Top class racing. The Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka is my favourite grand prix. Iconic corners like S curves,Degner curve,Spoon curve and the great 130R. I think Suzuka since it introduction in 1987 for me has now become the jewel in the crown of the F1 calendar along side Monte carlo and Spa francorchamps. I would like to see the 1990 Japanese grand prix. As Ayrton Senna said in interview it would of been nice to clinch the title like he did at Suzuka in 1988. 1993 was also great race. Ayrton press conference interview after the race was memorable. Andrew i got a suggestion. Why don't you show extended highlights of both the 1990 and 1993 grand prix. I notice you did this in the last pick your classic grand prix.

  • Comment number 59.

Evening all. Good choices, Andrew, and a great read. Whilst Senna is sometimes compared to Schumacher in resorting to pretty nasty tactics, I've always felt that at least Senna was inspired by an overwhelming sense of injustice. His disqualification from the '89 race remains one of the most astonishing decisions ever, and to face the prospect of rules being adjusted to hand the advantage to Prost again...

That said, I'll choose 1993 this time for a real master-class by a genius in an outclassed car in the rain on one of the greatest ever circuits.

I agree with Swerve1 - with so many new venues lined up, I've heard it suggested that both Spa and Suzuka could 'alternate' with other races. It will be a grim prospect indeed if we get a year with neither.

  • Comment number 60.

i would love to see 1993 please

as i haven't heard much about that race and 1990 as been done to death but a shame about 1996 japan gp though because it would be nice to see hill win title

  • Comment number 61.

You know I was PRAYING 1993 would be among the choices becuase it's one of my favourite races of all time, mainly becuase of Irvine.

    So:

    1st choice: 1993
    2nd choice: 1993
    3rd choice: 1993

That just about covers it! :-)

  • Comment number 62.

I'm fed up of the changes Ecclestone keeps making to the calendar, Suzuka is one of the elite circuits. I'd say there's 4 legendary circuits: Spa, Monza, Suzuka and Canada. If any of these four go then it's no longer F1 for me. The circuits should be a test of both man and machine and I feel these are the only four circuits that do that. All the new ones have been awful in my opinion, I'll save judgement on Abu Dhabi until after it's third year.

Getting back on topic I'd go for 1995. After seeing how poor Schumacher has been for this year, it'd be nice to see a reminder of the legend that he is still is for some of us. A driver who could put an inferior car at the front, I've only seen two drivers who could claim to be able to do that in the last two years, both in a certain French marque's car.

  • Comment number 63.

    Has to be 2005 !!

  • Comment number 64.

I'll go for 1993. I have to admit this season went off my radar a bit with Mansell driving in the US but there were still some great races. Will the punch up between Senna & Ervine be included?!?

I had a laugh when Coulthard and Ervine were on the Forum together recently and there was still needle there. I remember DC was asked if he would miss Ervine when he retired and he replied "Like a hole in the head"... Priceless!

  • Comment number 65.

    No competition.

    1993!

  • Comment number 66.

    90, it had to be.

  • Comment number 67.

    1993 please

  • Comment number 68.

    19. Considering it is the Japanese Grand Prix thet we are voting for and there was only 2 races in the 1970's (76 & 77) and they were on two years ago, and they didn't go back until 1987 it would have been difficult for Andrew to get any in the 70's & 80's that havn't already been used.

  • Comment number 69.

    1993 please.

  • Comment number 70.

    1990 was a great opening 10 seconds,but 1993 has got to be a more interesting spectacle for a 40 minute re-run. 1993, please.

  • Comment number 71.

Shame about 1998, would love to have seen that again. But 1993? Yes please!

You mean like, say, the French Grand Prix?

Of the choices here, 1993 please.

Any chance of getting us the 1978 Swedish GP, and that mental, but genius, fan car? Man, I wish Tamiya or Minichamps or someone would do a model of the fan car...

  • Comment number 73.

1990 for me please Andrew, I'd like to see who wins the race after Senna and Prost crash out. Thanks to Senna....

  • Comment number 74.

Good choice of races Andrew. I am going to vote for 1993. We haven't seen much from that season in this classics series.

Wasn't part of the reason that Irvine unlapped himself that the track was drying in the changeable conditions and Irvine was on slick tyres whilst Senna was still on wets?

  • Comment number 75.

    2007? replace 1998 with it?

  • Comment number 76.

Hi Andrew, F1 web team, busy 91Èȱ¬ archivists and fellow classic F1 nuts, are you trying to torture us?! 3 cracking races and we have to choose 1 for the full highlights treatment?! Simply by virtue of the fact 90 has part 2 of Senna v Prost that JUST about clinches it, but Id be happy with 93 or 95 as the shortened 90 highlights will feature THAT collision. Fair play to the video editor/s they do a pretty good job of keeping all the juicy bits in. It would be a crying shame if Suzuka is dropped or alternates as I agree its a cracking track and you have to have a soft spot for the Japanese fans - they may be completely bonkers but they just love their motor racing and its about time they at last have a credible F1 star in Kobayashi who Im sure will have a better 2011. Finally a couple of points - what happens if S Korea is dropped this year and no replacement is found, do we still get a round of classic F1 (cant wait to find out whats in store for that one!) and just to repeat something Ive mentioned before to all those who want to get the 00 & 01 season highlights on the cheap, Ive seen the old official F1 01 & 02 PS2 games for £1 each 2nd hand in a store that has 'station' & 'game' in it and earlier (non-platinum budget re-releases) come with the official FIA 00 & 01 season reviews respectively, no Murray unfortunately, but Ben Edwards is one of the better modern commentators and it has 'multi-angle' footage taken from Bernies F1 Digital+ feeds.

BTW you dont need a PS2 to view the 00 & 01 season reviews - theyre just standard PAL DVDs and will work fine on just about anything that has a DVD drive. Just make sure you inspect the contents that it has the review disc before purchase - enjoy!

1990 please - I've only been completely hooked by F1 in the last 5 years and I'd love to see the drama for this race for the first time.

1995 - ALESI's drive was reputed by many to be one of the best drives they had ever seen (J Palmer, A Jones).

Not holding my breath though. I doubt anyone here remembers much else other than Schumacher and Hill during that era...

1993, though hearing Irvine and Senna's bust up would be the best part!
