Counting 1p coins

When you count up the same type of coin, you are using your times tables.

Here you have eight 1p coins.

You can work out how much you have in total by counting up each coin:

1p + 1p + 1p + 1p + 1p + 1p + 1p + 1p = 8p

Or you can work this out through multiplication:

8 x 1p = 8p

Counting 2p coins

Take a look at this row of 2p coins.

Once again, you can find the total in two ways. You can add them together:

2p + 2p + 2p + 2p + 2p = 10p

Or you can use multiplication:

5 x 2p = 10p

Counting in 5ps

Here you can see 30p using 5p coins.

This can be worked out through repeated addition.

5p + 5p + 5p + 5p + 5p + 5p = 30p

Another way of working it out would be to multiply 5p by six.

5p x 6 = 30p

Different coin values and amounts

Coins have different values. They can be compared with each other using the greater than (>) or less than (<) symbols.

In this example, one 5p coin is compared in value to six 1p coins. This could also be written as:

5p < 6p
