Family is an important part of Spanish culture.

To introduce your family you can use the verbs tener (to have) and llamar (to be called).

For example:

• Tengo una hermana - I have a sister

• Mi hermana se llama Emily - My sister is called Emily

• Tengo una madre - I have a mother

• Mi madre se llama Emma - My mother is called Emma

To talk about different members of your family in Spanish, you can use the following words:

Masculine and feminine nouns

Remember to use the correct article with the correct noun.

If it’s a masculine noun, then use un and if it’s a feminine noun use una, for example:

The 'í' sound

You might have noticed that some letters in Spanish have an accent, such as í.

The accent is always above a vowel, as in ��� (uncle), and it lets you know to put stress on this part of the word.

The í sound is pronounced as an ‘ee’.
