After the American Civil War, many southern states retained racist rules and systems. The 1896 Supreme Court ruling allowing segregation was not successfully challenged until 1954.

During the 1950s and 1960s, the civil rights movement made great progress. Many people across America, including leaders like Martin Luther King, fought to end segregation.
