What is a syllable?
A syllable is a beat of sound in a word.
The beat can sometimes be part of a word, or the whole word.
For example 'window' has two beats ('win' 鈥 'dow') but 'door' had just one ('door').
Breaking words down into their syllables can be really helpful when you are learning spellings.

Activity 4
You are going to make your own syllable game to play with a partner.
First, choose a topic and write down a list of words related to that topic.
Your topic could be food, clothes, hobbies, characters or anything else that you like.
Aim to write around 12 words.
Try to choose some short words and some longer words.
Then, clap the syllables and mouth the word from a word on your list.
Don鈥檛 say the word out loud though!
Your partner needs to guess which word you are clapping the syllables for by listening to the number of syllables.
If they guess right, they get a point. If they don鈥檛, you get a point!
Here are some clothes words that you could use for your first round. Have fun!
