Difference between volume and capacity

Capacity is the total amount of liquid a container can hold. We can measure capacity in litres (l) and millilitres (ml).

Volume is the amount of liquid that is in a container. This changes when liquid is poured in or out.

1 litre = 1000 millilitres

1 l = 1000 ml

Volume and capacity are slightly different. Here鈥檚 an example:

A 4 litre jug filled with 2 litres of liquid
  • This jug has a capacity of 4 litres.

  • The volume of liquid in the jug is 2 litres.

  • The volume of liquid needed to fill the jug is 4 litres.

Can you see the difference?

The volume is how much liquid is in the jug.
