The British Empire
The British Empire overview
The British Empire began in the 1500s, under Elizabeth I’s rule. The empire grew to rule over 400 million people, having a significant impact on people in Britain and the colonies.
British colonialism in India
From 1857, India was directly ruled by Britain, and known as the British Raj. The British Raj had a big impact on the lives of people in both India and Britain.
Indian migration and indentured labour
After the slave trade was abolished, the British government needed cheap labour for the Industrial Revolution. Many labourers were Indian. They were sent across the world to work.
The ‘Scramble for Africa’
By the 1870s, most European countries were looking to expand their control in Africa. We can still see the impact of the Scramble for Africa today.
