About the course
Course assessment
The National 5 P.E. course is assessed in two parts. Portfolio tests your knowledge and understanding of the theoretical components of the course. Performance involves you being assessed in two different activities.
Answering questions
The questions used in the portfolio have different command words that test your knowledge and understanding in different ways. Understanding the command words will help you give the right type of answer.
Factors impacting on performance
Knowledge and understanding - Mental factors
Mental factors impact on performance and have associated features that can lead to positive or negative outcomes.
Knowledge and understanding - Emotional factors
Emotional factors impact on performance and have associated features that can lead to positive or negative outcomes.
Knowledge and understanding - Social factors
Social factors impact on performance and have associated features that can lead to positive or negative outcomes.
Knowledge and understanding - Physical factors
Physical factors impact on performance. Features of physical fitness, physical skills, tactics and composition can lead to positive or negative outcomes.
Key planning information
Setting goals and planning training will help develop the performance of an athlete. These skills will be used in developing different approaches in performance.
Performance development - Mental factors
The influence of mental factors can be positive or negative. The approaches used to develop performance are specific to the factor and the activity.
Performance development - Emotional factors
The influence of emotional factors can be positive or negative. The approaches used to develop performance are specific to the factor and the activity.
Performance development - Social factors
The influence of social factors can be positive or negative. The approaches used to develop performance are specific to the factor and the activity.
Performance development - Physical factors
The influence of physical factors can be positive or negative. The approaches used to develop performance are specific to the factor and the activity.
Investigating performance
Knowing how to collect, analyse and draw appropriate conclusions from data, will help a performer decide on the best approaches for their training programme.
Tracking and Assessing Progress
Feedback is needed to check performance progress and identify new development needs. This can be in the form of test results or observation schedules.
Portfolio
Understanding factors that impact on performance
Mental, emotional, social and physical factors can impact performance positively or negatively. It is important to recognise and develop an understanding of how these factors are presented.
Investigating performance
Learning and understanding the methods used to gather information on the impact of mental, emotional, social and physical factors can help improve a performance.
Developing a personal development plan
An appropriate data-gathering method and approach to personal development should consider the factor to be addressed and personal circumstances.
Developing approaches within a personal development plan
Different approaches can be used to develop mental, emotional, social and physical factors which impact performance. It is important to consider approaches when designing a personal development plan.
Monitoring, recording and evaluating performance development
Monitoring and evaluating your personal development plan allows you to see how effective your approach is and gives you data that can inform future development.
Performance
One-off performance
After considering and resolving any problems with their performance, the performer will display a range of movement and skills through two separate one-off activities. Performance in each activity is assessed against skill repertoire, control and fluency, cognitive skills, tactical understanding, rules and regulations and controlling emotions.
