For parents, there can be a sense of helplessness as your child goes through their exams - you can encourage them and comfort them, but it can be quite a nervous wait until the results finally arrive. This year students received results of National 4s and 5s in Scotland on Tuesday 6 August 2024 and in England, Wales and Northern Ireland GCSE results are on Thursday 22 August 2024.
They might feel a range of emotions as they wait and when they get their results - and that鈥檚 normal. If they鈥檙e happy with their results, that鈥檚 fantastic. If they鈥檙e disappointed with their results, you and they may have some questions about next steps. To save you and your child searching for all the info you need, our colleagues at Bitesize Support have put together some information to help you and your child navigate this period together.
What if your child is very anxious about their results?
Your child may have anxiety around receiving their results, what their grades are, and what to do next. Your child should always tell someone about the things they鈥檙e worried about. Ideally they would open up to you, but they can also tell a friend, teacher or another trusted adult. If they're struggling with their mental health, going to their GP can be a good place to start to find help. Their GP can let them know what support is available to them, suggest different types of treatment and offer regular check-ups to see how they鈥檙e doing.
If they鈥檙e in need of in-the-moment support they can contact , where they can speak to a counsellor. Their lines are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
