marking the opening of a new 拢500 million retail complex. |

The new
Bullring in Birmingham, which boasts more than 140 shops and kiosks
- including an iconic Selfridges store - was welcoming its first visitors.
The bull statue, concealed in a giant crate marked "Handle With Care",
was revealed by an explosion that made the crate's sides fall away.

The
Lord Mayor of Birmingham, John Alden, said: "This is a great opportunity
to celebrate the city's varied culture, the involvement of local
people and the significance of this day as another piece in the
jigsaw of the renaissance of Birmingham."

Organisers
said traffic had continued to flow smoothly around the city centre
site, despite fears of congestion, and that the car parks, though
busy, were not full.
The eye-catching Selfridges store - designed by award-winning
architects Future Systems - was the hot topic of discussion among
visitors to the site.
