It
was a more relaxed mood in Birmingham city centre for the England
v Switzerland game. There was an air of confidence before the match,
with fans predicting England would bounce back and beat the Swiss
by 3 or 4 goals.
The
crowd were a curious mix of fans in full England regalia and St
George flags, along with smartly dressed office staff who had just
finished their day at work.

The
opening twenty minutes saw the Swiss on top as the square gradually
filled up with nervous but expectant supporters.

Rooney's 23rd minute header soon eased the tension and sparked celebrations
and relief amongst the assembled fans.
The
second half remained close until West Brom's Bernt Haas was harshly
sent off in the 60th minute, leading to much amusement amongst followers
of Blues and Villa in the crowd.

Rooney's
second goal after great work from Villa's Darius Vassell finally
secured victory, leading to smiles all round.

and chanting
Steven
Gerrard's strike to make it three led to an outbreak of singing
and chanting from the now packed audience around the Big Screen
in Chamberlain Square.
As
fans filed home down New Street after the match, some claimed that
England could now win the tournament, whilst others just wanted
to focus on the next game against Croatia - with England now just
needing a draw to go through.
