Yuzuru Hanyu and Javier Fernandez are rivals at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.

Hanyu is Japan’s top figure skater, and Fernandez is Spain’s. This week they were both competing on the ice for the Olympic gold.

But, off the ice, the two Olympians are actually best mates – and have been for years.

“With Yuzu, we are everything, we are friends, we are teammates, at some point we have to be rivals,” Fernández told in 2015. “It’s like having a wife. Your wife is your friend, your wife is everything - but it depends on the time. When we are on the ice, we are competing against each other, but when the competition is done, we are friends again, and we work together again.”

If your heart isn't melting already, look what Hanyu did when Fernandez told him that PyeongChang 2018 was his last Olympics.

Yep, the Japanese champion, started crying, slumped over and said: “I can’t do it without you.”

It’s no surprise that the internet has taken to this unlikely friendship.

Many are sharing old clips of the two figure skaters affectionately expressing their friendship (which they do a lot).

One of the best is from just this week, when Hanyu won gold for the men’s singles figure skating.

Fellow Japanese skater Shoma Uno was on the podium next to him, having won silver, while his ultimate BFF Fernandez was there for bronze.

Hanyu invited both his brothers up onto the top podium with him, where he put his arms around them and smiled.

The crowd loved it - especially Hanyu’s hundreds of fans who’d been throwing cuddly Winnie Pooh teddies onto the rink for him, because (obviously), the cartoon bear is his favourite thing.

Here’s hoping that other Olympic athletes take note and start giving us more ultimate friendship goals.
