鈥淟et me in Patrick. For God鈥檚 sake open this door.鈥
Patrick hadn鈥檛 removed his stare from the words, scarred onto the desktop. A further thump chattered the door within its frame 鈥 sharper, a kick maybe.
鈥淪he鈥檚 dead Patrick.鈥 The voice outside hesitated. 鈥淧atrick I had to kill her. You understand, I had to kill her.鈥
A sudden pang of, he knew not what, shot to his brain. It stung. He looked over to the rattling doorknob, then to the warning 鈥 the DON鈥橳. He knew it was for him.
Suddenly a phone rang in the corner; as shrill and clear as the knocking at the door. The knocking stopped.
Patrick grabbed the phone from its receiver. A deep voice spoke to him slowly from the other end. 鈥淚s David there?鈥
鈥淵es鈥 Patrick鈥檚 reply was knee-jerk.
鈥淭here鈥檚 a gun under your mattress. Kill him.鈥
