A single item programme is where there is just one continuous narrative thread, so this would include readings, documentaries or drama.
A multi-item programme might be a magazine programme, where there are lots of separate elements.
In this video there are examples of both.
There are tips on:
- copying information
- moving items around
- storing information for quicker access in future items
Find out more about running orders in our quick guide.
OK, so let's start putting some content into the running order. Programmes are either going to be single item or multi-items. Let me explain that. A single item programme would be a documentary or a reading or a drama. There's just one continuous narrative thread and you don't need to break the programme up. A multi-item programme might be a magazine programme where there are lots of separate elements making up the whole.
My programme is a magazine programme, so it's going to be multi-item. And in order to start populating the running order, I'm going to click on the new item tab on the right hand side. And you'll see there are various options for elements I can put into my programme. Pre-rec is any piece of content that's been pre-recorded and is not live. Studio is any live element of the programme and archive is any clip you might've taken from another programme, film or event.
The first item in my running order is a studio item. It's a live interview with a nutritionist and she's talking about a new red wine diet. So I'm going to grab the studio icon and drag it across into my running order. And you can see I've forgotten to put my running order back into edit mode there, so it's prompted me to go back into edit mode. OK, I'm going to give this item duration and a title.
So the duration is approximately six minutes and I can write this almost anywhere I want. If I do six, Proteus knows it means six minutes or six point zero, Proteus knows. You don't need to be really accurate here, just a rough idea will be fine. The title of your item is really important. You want to pack this full of key words so it's searchable in Proteus. Don't worry about full sentences and perfect grammar. Although, do be accurate with your spelling. This isn't public facing, the idea is that we can archive and search for your content easily. You've got 255 characters which is quite generous, so put in as much detail as you want.
You want to record what the item's about, who's in it, possibly where the item's recorded, maybe any moments of note. So the relevant information for my feature here is who the interview is with, what she does, and what she's talking about. My next item is a pre-recorded item, so I'll drop that in. It's about a luxury boot camp, so I'll fill in the duration and I'll give it a detailed item title. And here, the place the feature was recorded is relevant, so I've included that in the content item title. And also there are famous names being interviewed here and I've made it clear who they are and what they're talking about and I've included the name of the reporter who I think is also relevant. So I'll just save that.
And within this piece, I've got a piece of archive from a film The Hangover. Here, I've got to be precise about the duration is there'll be rights issues attached. So when I drag this item across. I'm going to be careful that the red line rests within the content item so we know the archive is part of that feature. I'm also going to put details of rights clearance in the title text as this is really important. You don't want someone reusing this archive without permission, so be clear about how many times it can be used, the context it can be used in, and who cleared the clip for use. And you can offer more rights information when you add contributors to this clip.
So, finally, we've got a live piece from Pineapple Studios in Covent Garden with Davina McCall, she's doing a workout. And here it would be tempting to drag an outside source into the running order here, but we're not going to use that icon. As I mentioned before, we'll only ever use three of the icons - pre-record, studio and archive. This will be studio as it's live and we can give details of the venue in the content item title. So keep adding items till you've got a complete record of everything that featured in your programme.
If you want to move any of these items around, hold your mouse over the left hand side of the item and you'll see a little wobbly line appear once we click on edit. And if you grab the item from that point, you'll see you can move it up and down to reorder your items. And if you want to delete an item, just click into it so it goes yellow and then you can just press the delete button on your keyboard and it will disappear. Don't worry about the text at the bottom of the running order telling about underruns or overruns. That's for use when timing live programmes and not relevant here.
