Somali eye surgeon Dr Abdirisak Dalmar takes great risks to continue his work.

He was twice forced to flee his country - first at the start of the civil war in 1991, then again in 2007 after the Ethiopian army's intervention.

He had returned to Mogadishu in 2002 to set up the country's first post-war eye hospital.

The hospital is still open, but not working at full capacity.

Meanwhile Dr Dalmar regularly returns to Somalia to carry out eye operations at surgical camps supported by Medecins sans Frontieres.

While there, he makes a point of teaching students at Benadir University in Mogadishu - a medical school which he helped to found.

He is also consultant ophthalmologist and head of training and research for the international eye charity Right to Sight.

Dr Dalmar spoke to Outlook's Lucy Ash about his remarkable life and work.
