Commonwealth Capers

On the hippie trail: the adventures of young British people in the 60s and 70s travelling overland to India.

In the 1960s and 70s, coach-loads of students travelled thousands of miles from Britain to India.

Travelling together in convoy, they journeyed overland on customised buses - eating, sleeping and partying on-board, and entertaining those they met on the way.

At that time, the Commonwealth had just been created from the last of the British Empire

The mass expeditions were inspired by the new international spirit of the Commonwealth, and were known to all then as Comex.

In a special series for Outlook, reporter Dan Damon met some of the people who took part in Comex and heard all about their memories.
