Have we learnt anything new about Tony Blair?

| Wednesday, 9 Sept. 2010 | 18:00 - 19:00 GMT

Today Tony Blair's awaited memoirs, A Journey, have been published and one of the revelations in his book is his relationship with his Chancellor and successor, Gordon Brown. It's no secret that the two men didn't get on but Tony Blair says:

"He was difficult, at times maddening? Yes. But he was also strong, capable and brilliant, and those were qualities for which I never lost respect. "

In a 91بب±¬ interview he says:

"The relationship with Gordon Brown was very very difficult but also very close. Towards the end it was frankly hard, going on impossible but that for large parts of the time we were in government, he was an immense source of strength.

But this book goes beyond the relationship between these two men, it talks about September 11th, the Iraq war, the death of Diana Princess of Wales, peace in Northern Ireland and even his use of alcohol as a crutch when things got tough.

Stanley Starsh Atonya - Not really. Tony acted as President Bush's poodle since assuming office at No.10 and appeared to read scripts made from the Oval office. No amount of words or memoirs for that matter can expunge all the diplomatic faux pas

Manoj in Norfolk emailed - Tony Blair is a great leader. Except on the Iraq war issue, his judgements and leadership on various other aspect were great. It's a shame he had to leave office just because of Mr. Brown.

Simone in Brazil emailed - Memoirs are an easy way to promote oneself, especially because we naturally attempt to show our personality according to our own thoughts and judgment, which is not necessarily the same that general people have about us.

Elias on the blog - It is high time to give Tony Blair a break, he was a brilliant politician and Prime Minister, he did what he thought was best for the country, and if he made some mistakes, so what?. No one can claim having never made mistakes 'to err is human', it is high time he was Knighted by the Queen for his past endeavours.

Susan in Ireland - Talk about handbags at dawn. Is there a politician out there who has a nice word to say about ex colleagues? They will do anything and say anything if it helps sell a book.

Dee Kieft - I'm looking forward to the book. Mr Blair and all world leaders make mistakes, but Mr Blair is also trying to rectify some of the damage. I'm open & believe that we should forgive and move on
