Can you have too much religious freedom?

| Monday, 8 Aug. 2010 | 18:04 - 19:04 GMT

Two weeks ago we discussed whether to put the ground zero mosque story on the air. The only thing that was stopping us was that the initial spike in interest in the story had been the week before. In the end we decided we run with it, and here we are now with the debate getting bigger by the day. We should've known that journalist's pre-occupation with avoiding 'old' stories is not shared by most of you.

Michael Caudill - No simple solution here, but at the heart is combatting and overcoming the fear that gangs methodically cultivate--in this case by terrorism and murder.

Steve on the blog - I don't believe any terrorist attack has been committed in the name of strip clubs, nor were strip clubs the motivation of the 19 hijackers on 9/11.

Mike in Seattle on the blog - I'd just like to point out that these plans have been in the works for a long time, and only now are people starting to complain. Last month it was a scandal about new and likely unconstitutional laws about immigration. Maybe it's just me, but the United States is what, six weeks away from a major election? It sounds like to me that some silly wedge issues are being brought up to gin up political support.

Lincoln Muri, Fort Myers Beach, on the blog - It seems that everyone is confusing the legal aspects of this case with the human element. It is legal to build the mosque there no doubt and the courts cannot ever reverse that based on the constitution.

Matt Mohrman - One thing that needs to be said about the Mosque near ground zero is, There is a Mosque there already. That gets used every day

Bill DeZarn Sr - Until Muslims purge themselves of extremists in their ranks, until mosques are purged of the planners of terrorists acts, I say no to a mosque at Ground Zero.

80% think Obama is Muslim? If I recall correctly the poll said that that many Americans just didn鈥檛 know he was a Christian.

Los Chris Hearn - It's pretty sad what is happening in the US right now. I feel the flames are being fanned by extreme right-winger news outlets, like Fox News. What is being created is a dangerous level of hatred. The US just seems like a powder keg ready to blow apart right now.

As an atheist, I oppose all religions. But I will fight for everyone鈥檚 right to believe whatever absurdity they want or do as they wish with their money.

I think the only premise for any objection against a Mosque is a declaration of war against Islam. I hope this ends.

Please clear up the assumption that it is mosque or community center!
