Liverpool Welsh
Has devolution diminished Liverpool's unofficial status as the capital of North Wales?
Monday 23 June, 6.30pm
As part of a special week of programming celebrating Liverpool's year as European Capital of Culture, Eye on Wales sends reporter Carl Roberts - who grew up in Rhyl and went to university in the city - back across the Mersey to see if the lure of Liverpool remains as strong as ever for the people of North Wales.
Taking a bus tour around the city, the programme explores if the establishment of the National Assembly has signalled a shift in allegiance and the beginning of the end of the love affair between North Wales and Merseyside.
On his travels Carl meets the Welsh exiles who have made their homes in Liverpool and a Liverpudlian who settled in North Wales after being evacuated there during the war, and whose story has formed the basis of a new play touring the region.
Is it their experience that the focus of North Wales has shifted more towards Cardiff Bay from Liverpool Bay over the last decade? Or does the attraction of Liverpool simply boil down to geography over nationality or politics?

Mark from Caergrwle:
"As someone living in North East Wales it is clear that economically as well as socially this region is tied to the North West of England. This includes Manchester and Chester as well as Liverpool. I agree with the comments made on the programme, that geography will always mean that Cardiff will remain distant in our thoughts. Our accents and our sporting inclinations also distinguish us from our southern brethren. Maybe more programmes explaining and analysing differences between the North and the South would be of interest to all your listeners throughout the principality."
