Eye On Wales: Monday 16 June

Teenage Parents

The reality that lies beneath the statistics that show Wales has some of the highest rates of teenage pregnancy in Western Europe.

Chantelle has just turned 18 and is due to give birth in August. It was unplanned, but when she learnt she was pregnant she had no doubts about what to do next.

"I wouldn't have aborted it at all. It's a life isn't it, and what if you can't have kids in the future?"

Hannah is a mother of two. Now 19, she had her first child when she had just turned 17. She gets cross when it's suggested that her young age means that she might not be equipped for motherhood.

"It doesn't matter how old you are to make you a good mother. You've just got it there and that's it."

Lee is standing by the mother of his child. He feels that fatherhood has helped to turn his life around and given him a sense of purpose. "The way I was going before I had the baby, I was just ruthless. I didn't care about the consequences. But now I can't think like that because I've got a baby."

This week's 'Eye on Wales' talks to young Welsh parents about the choices and sacrifices they've made and hear about their hopes and fears for the future for themeselves and their children.
