Eye On Wales: Monday 2 July
Bovine tuberculosis
Monday 2 July at 6.32pm
(repeated Sunday 8 July at 6.31am)
THE life of Shambo, a six year old bullock, hangs in the balance today as rural development minister Jane Davidson decides on his fate after he tested positive for a bovine tuberculosis test.
It has been two months since Shambo tested positive for the disease and last week the Welsh Assembly minister announced that she was 'minded' to go ahead with the slaughter, despite protestations from the Carmarthenshire Hindu temple where he lives.
But the furore over Shambo's destiny also comes at a time when the bovine tuberculosis issue is coming to a head.
A long-awaited Government report looking into the spread of the disease was published two weeks ago, which dismissed a long held view that culling badgers was not the answer to curbing the spread of TB.
This week Eye on Wales looks at the story behind the headlines and examines what can be done to stop the transmission of this costly disease.
