Eye On Wales: Monday 4 June

Shadows of the Falklands conflict

Monday 4 June at 6.32pm
(repeated Sunday 10 June at 6.31am)

Twenty-five years after the Falklands War, is our care and support for traumatised ex-combat veterans changing pace with modern warfare?

In a week which marks the 25th anniversary of the bombing of the troop ship Sir Galahad, which resulted in the greatest British loss of life of the South Atlantic conflict, we hear from both Falklands and Gulf War veterans struggling to cope with the lasting mental anguish of having been in combat.

The programme also hears from the mother of a 20-year-old soldier who hanged himself after returning from the most recent Gulf conflict.

Ex-services organisations report they're facing more demand for help than ever - waiting lists are growing at a worrying pace, says Combat Stress, the only charity offering specialist residential treatment to combat veterans.

Welsh veterans currently have to travel to Combat Stress centres in Shropshire or Surrey for help, but the charity is looking to open a new treatment centre and have thrown down the gauntlet to the Welsh Assembly Government to help realise their dream of locating it in Wales.Meanwhile, the responsibility for treating traumatised ex-servicemen in the community lies primarily with the NHS; but many face a postcode lottery in finding the appropriate specialist care for their needs.
