England's Meeta Raval performs Beim Schlafengehen from R Strauss's Vier letzte Lieder No 3, in the final of the 2011 91Èȱ¬ Cardiff Singer of the World competition.

Strauss's valedictory Four Last Songs deal serenely with the subject of death and were written shortly before he died. In 'Going to sleep' the poet is tired and wants to give himself up to the friendly night. All his senses want to sleep and his soul wishes to soar into the magic sphere of the night, to live more deeply there. The poem is by Hermann Hesse.
