Katharine Tier studied at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and at San Francisco Opera's Merola Opera Program, and held an Adler Fellowship 2007-08. Teachers and coaches include Dr Rowena Cowley, Cesar Ulloa, Sharolyn Kimmorley and John Parr.

Katharine won the 2002 Australian Singing Competition, the 2004 Barilla Opera Award, the mezzo-soprano award in the 2005 Sydney Opera Awards, the 2006 Vocal Workshop Award from the Neue Stimmen competition, and the Joan Sutherland Society of Sydney scholarship. Katharine appeared at San Francisco Opera in 2007 as Third Lady (Die Zauberflöte), Suzy (La rondine) and Kate Pinkerton (Madama Butterfly), and, in 2008, as Brigitta (Die tote Stadt). At the San Francisco Opera Adler Fellowship, roles added to her repertoire included Flosshilde (Das Rheingold), Idamante (Idomeneo), Dalila (Samson et Dalila) and Octavian (Der Rosenkavalier).

Future engagements include Mary in State Opera South Australia's production of Der fliegende Holländer and the title role of Carmen with Opera North New Hampshire. 2009 will see Katharine's first engagement with Opera Australia, covering Charlotte in Werther.

An avid concert performer, her credits include Shostakovich's Jewish Poetry, Beethoven's Ninth Symphony and Duruflé's Requiem, Katharine's first recording is A Hallel for Our Times, by Shelley Olsen.

She enjoys the outdoors and mental and physical challenges ranging from rock-climbing to word puzzles.
