Stephen Dunne: My Flag

My Flag

By Stephen Dunne
May 2005, Wrexham
A digital story from Yale College

"When I look back at all the photos of myself, I always seem to have something in my hands. I don't know if it's a comfort thing or not but it always seems to be a different object. When my parents took me on a trip to Llangollen we went or a ride on an old fashioned steam train, my dad bought me a little flag with Thomas the Tank Engine on it and that became my favourite toy.

On the train I was running up and down playing with my new flag. My dad lifted me up so I could wave the flag out of the window. I put me hand out of the window and let the flag fly free in the wind it felt great - the flag blowing in its full beauty. But out of no where the train came to a halt! My dad saved me from falling by pulling me away from the window but, when he grabbed me my brand new flag jumped out of my hand and fell all the way down to the river.

My head just filled with emotions, I wasn't sure what to do, whether to burst out crying or to go crazy at my dad. I chose the second option. Hearing my dad laugh made me shout and take my anger out on him, I wanted him to feel the pain I felt for that flag but it was no good. He didn't understand, at that moment I had not just lost a cheap toy, I had lost a friend. After a lot of thought I asked my dad's friend John if he could buy me a new flag. He said he would. So when we got back to the station I had a new best friend.

Looking back at this video, it makes me laugh to think that I could get so worked up over a flag. Something so insignificant can cause so much heartache to a child."
